The school is located near Mimico in Etobicoke. Beside it is the popular San Remo bakery and a meat market. It is a quaint community and one that is under transition and becoming more gentrified. Students regularly go to nearby parks in the area for physical activity, and nearby libraries as well as other field trips which supplements their learning. Love the location!
The school is deeply connected to the neighbourhood, and the children venture forth daily or even twice daily to local parks, the library, the waterfront, etc. Our son likes the ready access to the local parks as he feels strongly connected to nature there and walking through the vibrant neighborhood provides insight into everyday city life. There is constant activity of all kinds, and the children feel safe and engaged in the real world.
We love the neighbourhood. The kids definitely use the surrounding area as part of their learning experience. The area is quite peaceful, with lots of places to explore and be around nature. The school has regular outings, not just to the immediate surroundings, but also in other parts of the city, incorporating their in-class learning. When asked, our oldest will say this is her favourite part of the school!
Oak Learners could aptly be described as the polar opposite of an island. Students will perform at least one activity (each day; rain/snow or shine) outside of school premises. This can be a walk to the parks nearby, to conducting surveys within the community, to participating in community events in Mimico. This is clearly a school strength. On the other hand, we can also clearly see how the broader Mimico community appreciates Oak Learners very much.
