They have visited apple trees in the area to learn about nature, cooked, visited the little creek near the school and fished for marshmallows and toy fishes. Memories that my daughter tells with great joy.
Located in the heart of Etobicoke, Olivet School is situated on a large property next to a right of way near Echo Valley Park. Organized trips to Mimico Creek or lessons out in the field contributed to a unique and FUN learning experience! In winter, the teachers would sometimes take us tobogganing at the nearby hill during recess. Outdoor time and nature is such an important part of childhood development and the teachers at Olivet know this. There were many art class projects that involved the nature resources nearby. I remember going out with my class to the ravine to forage leaves for prints or take pictures for a photography unit. While the street address is Burnhamthorpe Road, the parking lot and playground of Olivet face a quiet residential street and neighbourhood. The students are safe and protected within the property boundaries.
The school is in a good location near a natural areas with trails that lend themselves to organized hikes, sledding, and exploration of the nearby creek. Students did not venture off the grounds for lunch unless something special was planned and a teacher accompanied them. Going home for lunch was discouraged even for students who lived nearby, which I found helped to build community. The area is safe and pleasant, but unfortunately becoming too expensive for many young families to live nearby. I remember going on runs through the neighbourhood in gym class, and the neighbours did not mind seeing students. The location is near enough to downtown Toronto that field trips to the Ontario Science Centre and Young People's Theatre were readily possible, as were trips to natural areas to the west, such as Heart Lake, Rattlesnake Point, and Kelso conservation areas.
The location of the school is good. It is gated in a great neighborhood. In the city but have lots of green space for the children to explore safely. The children have a creek that they can learn about the environment. They have pumpkin carving and are able to decorate the green space at Halloween time. At Olivet Halloween is celebrate with tasteful non scary costumes. With a fire station nearby the children interact with the fire men and learn about their skills and are able to go in the trucks.
The school grounds are situated in a nice residential neighborhood fenced off from the street. Being turned away from the main road allows them to use the surround area to play on. The primary field is great for events like picnics and barbecues and is a good place to play games such as tag and soccer. The playground is fenced creating a good sized place for younger children and making it easier for the teachers to monitor the kids at recess. The hydro-field is a personal favorite of my daughter as her friend and she would as to go with a teacher on duty and they would have play in the trees and let their imagination run wild. The kids were never trapped on the property but frequently had excursions to surrounding parks and facilities.
