Toronto, ON | Grades 7 - 12 | Shortlist
I credit much of my success to my time at St. Michael's and its ability to prepare me for university. I do recall in first year at the University of Western Ontario, I was in a Political Science class and there were multiple people asking about how to write an essay... I had done probably more than a dozen by the time Grade 13 rolled around! Furthermore, since Grade 9, we had to do full solution exams, not just multiple choice and so when it came to writing exams in university, while it's never easy, granted, I was far more prepared. It just further drove home the concept of how the education I received, while at times challenging and indeed stressful, was a very important piece of my academic journey.
SMCS uses a deep learning pedagogy which is based on four key areas of learning and assessment – Knowledge and Understanding; Thinking and Inquiry; Communication; and lastly Application. SMCS has responded extremely well to the pandemic by providing an adaptive hybrid learning model. The overall in-class learning is very robust and integrates the use of technology in every subject studied prior to our health crisis, during and immediately following. His teachers have encouraged collaboration and knowledge sharing among his peers. This has allowed our son to pick up on different methods to problem-solving. Where we believe the school can improve upon is through placing more emphasis on developing strong writing skills in all subject areas. The preparation for his future is in his ability to communicate succinctly orally and through written content. If he can communicate grammatically correctly, we know this will enable him to succeed in all avenues he chooses to pursue.
Academics are at there highest not only because of the quality of teaching, but because of their holistic approach to education and its resources enable the students to develop their individual talents and grow in confidence and character. It evident that St. Michael's offers the kind of education that equips its students with academic skills that help develop their personal qualities that will serve them throughout their lives. It is easy for all to see that there is a rich culture encouraging individual passions, it is no surprise that the students enjoy a unique experience here. I truly believe that this approach brings out the best in each student and engenders enthusiasm and ambition. Qualities that we recognize in our three sons, making them ready for the future.
We are strongly convinced that St. Michael's College School's academic program is adequately preparing our boys for real life and university. The school is constantly investing in its teachers' formation and personal development to challenge and support each individual student academically, helping them build academic independence. Throughout these years, both of our sons have participated in the school's "Accelerated Reading Program (ARP)" & "Reading Olympics". It is designed for students up to grade 10, but they have continued reading afterwards. We have found both programs strengthen their literacy abilities and widens their understanding of our world. There is also opportunity to participate in all kinds of math, science, engineering, chess and robotic contests during the school year with the support and permanent guidance of the school's teachers.
