The community at St. Michael's is something unique. I am proud to be both an alumnus and a parent and what has struck me, even more now with a son attending, is the amazing passion of the people who are involved in the school. I mentioned earlier that some of the most passionate members are those that had no previous ties to the school but now have a son attending - to see how they rally to support initiatives is heart-warming to say the least. Being part of the Alumni Association, I also get to experience what it is like to see those fellow graduates come together to also support what the school is looking to accomplish and provide a vast resource for new graduates to tap into as they grow in their careers and in their life journey.
The parents of boys who attend SMCS are so connected to the school through a virtuoso of offerings beginning with the SMCSPA (St. Michael’s College School Parent Association) where the opportunities to meet other boys’ families while participating in both social and community based educational programming comes to live. Mothers and Fathers of Boys at St. Mike’s enjoy their own separate events annually at the “Mother & Son Brunch" and "Father & Son BBQ”. In addition, the annual fundraising Gala hosted by the SMSCPA allows all families to participate in a spectacular semi-formal event. Parents and the community can also attend parent talks, student-led theatrical and musical performances at the SMCS Centre for the Arts, which houses seating of up to 440 patrons. Parents whom we have spoken to always highlight how nice it is to be integrated into the school through various events which speaks to how important the school value family.
Community is a key part of the student and parent experience at St. Michael's College School. It allows the full community to get involved, this creates an accepting, empathetic and loyal atmosphere and an amazing school spirit. Parents are a large part of the every day life of the school, be it through the P.A. or any of the committees. I have witnessed the quality of the St Mike's community first hand, being the chair of the FATHER-SON BBQ event for eight years. How the event grew every year from 100 fathers and sons to well over 400 fathers and sons. How every parent wants to give something of themselves, to make the school a better place for all. My wife and I have made many friends from our time spent with this community, its something that we are very grateful to have experienced.
Even during this abnormal COVID times, St. Mike's parents' association has communicated the meetings' schedule for the year, and it is already planning activities that can continue to strengthen the sense of community and welcome new families. We believe there are high levels of involvement and everyone is welcomed to participate and offer their talents for their sons’ and the school's well-being. The school works along with families in fundraising activities and round out experiences for the boys. Parents are active in various social activities, in welcoming new families into the school, but also in the academic, extracurricular, and spiritual growth of their sons. Following Catholic values, students at St. Mikes are taught to know right from wrong and recognize the need to help one's neighbour in our communities.
