Toronto, ON | Grades 7 - 12 | Shortlist
When I started, Ontario still had Grade 13 so these were going to be the guys I was around with for 5 years. As mentioned previously, some of my closest friends to this day were the classmates that I met while at the school. It was a great atmosphere where we would gather at the Arena or on the Field to watch the teams play and of course there were some healthy and fun rivalries. Now, more than 25 years after leaving the school as a graduate, I still interact with dozens of classmates on a regular basis. The funny thing as well is that some of us have not seen each other much since graduation but when we have gotten together, it feels like almost no time has passed! This is unique.
There are just under 1000 students that currently attend SMCS starting from grades 7 to 12. The atmosphere is so alive from the moment one steps foot onto the school’s beautiful sprawling eleven-acre campus near the heart of downtown Toronto. The School’s student leadership team, Wellness ambassadors and home form teachers create an atmosphere that our son has absorbed through every spore of his body. As he says routinely to us, he now “bleeds blue” alongside his brothers from St. Mike’s. He feels connected as do we from the “Daily Blue” announcements which are televised and archived through the School’s on-line platform “EDSBY”, so that every student and parent can learn about upcoming events, daily school news and highlights from the school’s extra-curricular teams. Various events such as “Homecoming” and “Spirit Week” are just a fraction of what that boys celebrate and come together as group throughout the year.
The thing that puts a smile on my wife and I is that the friends that my sons have made during the 15 years between my sons attending St Mike's is a sure sign that the quality of the boys is evident in how they have respect for each other in their interactions and care for each individual. With more than 900 students our boys are able to have a diverse group of friends from diverse cultures, giving them a respect and inclusive understanding of the world. St Mike's has always been a high spirit school, this spirit is noticed when walking through the halls. When walking though the halls you can feel the that the Basilian motto of GOODNESS,DISCIPLINE AND KNOWLEDGE is in every boy that enters and in every man that graduates.
At St. Mike's there is a true sense of brotherhood among students. They care for each other's well being and there is healthy competition among them. By spending lots of time together in the first week of school grade trip, the boys start developing strong relationships that last through the years. We've heard from other families, that in university the boys look for other "St. Michael's Men" to support themselves in their path, as they share common values and experiences. Our boys have developed a strong rapport with many students in their own grades and older classes as well, thanks to the many extra-curricular activities that the school offers. They will really miss their friends and the time they spent together, when they leave for university.
