I have to say that I was indeed lucky to have dedicated and memorable teachers while I was attending St. Michael's College. Fr. Zinger's Grade 10 Religion homeroom is one I still draw from to this day with his 'Patience is a virtue' teachings. There was always a degree of mutual respect. 'Was every single teacher I had my favorite?'. No, by no means, but I will say that the vast majority of my teachers and coaches and the experiences I have had were amazing. I see how my son interacts with his teachers and his enjoyment of the experience at the school is reflected in his marks - better than mine were too, which is what I could only ever hope for and I look forward to how his 2020/21 year will evolve.
Our son since day one has known his boundaries and what is expected of him from both the school and his teachers. Each faculty member has not only responded quickly to any concerns we may have but, has provided additional time to assist our son overcome the smallest struggles he faced during this school year. His teachers not only connected him with upper-year students to act as both mentor and tutor, but also set aside time outside of class to perform one on one connected learning and review. His teachers were very proactive in contacting us with both challenges and positive news from within the classroom. His teachers made his learning objectives fun and inspiring. This allow our son to grasp key concepts not just through textbooks, but also through teacher lead anecdotal experience.
It is clear that the quality of teaching is what we expected. The teachers nurture an environment where you won't feel the need to hide in the crowd....and won't have the opportunity to easily do so. It is clear to my wife and I that teachers at St. Mike's are passionate about the subjects they teach. This imbued them with the love of learning for its own sake. We see it in our sons that they encourage their students to take risks and challenge assumptions so that they can embrace different ways of thinking and find creative solutions to problems. They encourage our boys to read widely in order to extend their knowledge and hone their analytical skills, all within an exciting academic atmosphere. This care of teaching and learning has helped my three sons in preparation for their future.
The teachers at St. Michael's College School are virtuous, very passionate and professional in their work. They show high expectations for students and have a heavy emphasis on teaching fundamentals. We have experienced firsthand how dedicated St. Mike's teachers are, as they want to see students excel and uphold the school values of "Goodness Discipline and Knowledge" by providing direct instruction and allowing guided practice. They scaffold and release responsibility gradually, leading to student independence and keeping the boys engaged by building partnership and continually challenge them to give the best of themselves. Our boys will miss many of their teachers when they finish high school, many of them are exemplary leaders that have become our sons' true mentors throughout their years at the school.
