Toronto, ON | Grades 7 - 12 | Shortlist
From our experience the college counselling was excellent. They encouraged our three sons to evaluate and articulate their talents, interests, and aspirations as they began the college admissions process. The counsellors offered close, personal guidance and support throughout the application and selection process, this allowed an educational process in which each of our sons had considerable responsibility. We also found that my sons' counsellors had a deep knowledge of every Canadian university, which made articulating the benefits and shortcomings much easier. The university night was also very helpful allowing my sons to speak directly to a representative of the universities. Having alumni that are attending some of the universities was also extremely helpful and gave my sons some comfort in their choices. This was a pleasant experience for parents as well.
Although our son is only in Grade 10, we believe the school has all the necessary support arms to allow our son to choose his school with ample time and information. SMCS routinely hosts open houses with a variety of post-secondary institutions right on campus. The boys have the benefit of Universities courting them within the comfort of their own building. Our son’s personal guidance counselor will no doubt help guide him to where his passion resides. SMCS has a 100% University acceptance rate with over 89% of its graduates on the honour roll or as an Ontario Scholar. We have no doubt our son is well supported at his school because they foster a culture of inclusion, openness and care that our son has responded to through empathy and compassion throughout.
The amazing thing about this process is it brings back all of my memories around getting ready for university and I will say that while I had a laser focus on where I wanted to go, every single interaction I had was supportive and insightful. Since my son is in Grade 11 now, we are starting that journey so that we are also prepared. He is very laser focused on his future and I credit the school for helping with that thought process. The Guidance Counselor that he works with is exceptional and the thing I really appreciate about him is the genuine interest in making sure that my son is supported. I expect that as Grade 12 looms, things will get even more interesting and am confident that among everyone at the school, he will have the best possible setup to get to where he wants to go.
We are just starting to go to the university application process this year. So far and for every year, we have felt well supported, have received timely advice, and invitations to meetings to guide our sons' academic path, in order to successfully apply to university programs that interest them. We believe that St. Michaels prepares for university success with a challenging and diverse curriculum as it provides a modern, Liberal Arts, Catholic education that "liberates" the mind and prepares students to be independent and critical thinkers who embrace the diverse challenges of today’s world. The school has a "Student Affairs Department" composed by the Guidance Department (6 Guidance counsellors), the Learning Enrichment Centre, and the Odette Library. They all work as a team to ensure the boys are adequately prepared for life at the school and after graduation.
