I have always been able to reach a teacher or senior member of the faculty if an issue or concern has arisen. The School is proactive in addressing any potential concern and wants to ensure that the students, parents and staff are all happy and working well together as a community. They will proactively let us know if they witness any concerns with our children as well. I have also felt like the lines of communication are open and operate both ways.
There is always a weekly school letter, updating the parents about the school, the teaching and learning. We receive speedy notification about what and how things are, which contribute to a trusting relationship between parents and the school administration teams. In view of the current drastic Covid-19 situation, the school quickly arranged zoom classes effectively. The teachers are hardworking and prepared the materials and distribute them to us every Friday. They make videos for teaching the content, helping keep students' learning in progress. Despite all the uncertainties and difficulties, teachers are still showing care, and encouraging students to learn and try during zoom classes. Such teaching enthusiasm is influential for not only for absorbing knowledge, but also for positive character development.
The leadership communicates regularly with parents through weekly newsletters and other communications. They keep parents very informed about what is happening at the school. They have an open-door policy when it comes to addressing concerns from students and parents. They take these concerns very seriously. They are responsive and will quickly address them in a constructive manner. They make it clear that the #1 priority is the well-being is the students. They create a very loving and nurturing environment for students.
We now have the dynamic duo - Principal Dr. Barbara Smith, who comes with a wealth of experience in teaching and leadership of schools in Canada as well as the United States. Dr. Smith brings a great deal of energy and innovative ideas to the Giles School, she doesn't want to follow the lead, she wants to BE the lead in creating thoughtful and engaging learning experiences for children and families alike. Vice Principal Madame Caroline has been with the school for 25 years and her love and dedication to the students and their families have bestowed on her the loving reference as the "heart of the school". Not only is she caring and thoughtful of the children's social and emotional development, but she is also focused on ensuring the children have the best academic programming and one that teaches children to an advanced level without overwhelming them. All schools have issues that arise, and this administrative duo is focused on hearing people's concerns and addressing them in a developmentally appropriate way with children, with an open discussion involving parents, keeping the Giles values in mind. Unlike some other schools that emphasize rigid rules, and use techniques to outwardly identify kids who have not complied, The Giles school uses education and common values to help children to understand why behaviors or interactions were hurtful or problematic and how to move forward in the right direction.
The school leadership and administration at the Giles School have such a deep commitment to the school that is felt by everyone. The principal and vice principal are always open and available to hear any concerns that I may have. I have always felt heard and acknowledged, no matter what the outcome has been. Everyone involved in administration makes a sincere effort to connect to all the families in the school and make everyone feel included and involved. There is constant communication with families, which adds to the feeling of inclusion and community.
Have definitely seen an evolution in the leadership over the past few years. The school has made great strides in improving communication and addressing parental concerns. What is impressive is the vision of the school's leadership to marry those elements of a more typical "traditional" school with those elements considered more modern or leading edge. As a parent, this gives me confidence that my kids are in the best possible learning environment and with the best possible chance to thrive. And because my son did attend another school (albeit for a very short six weeks), I can definitely say with certainty that I have much confidence in the leadership at The Giles School. One of the things they do best is that they listen.
