They thought the teachers were very invested in seeing them succeed both in & out of the classroom. They loved the athletic & musical opportunities & the interactions with college students who shared the same campus.
The leadership was strong & communicated information promptly & professionaly. Discipline was fair & redemptive.
We were very happy with the quality of instruction. The teachers were passionate about the subjects they taught & were very willing to give extra support & instruction as needed. They learned to think critically rather than be “spoon-fed”.
I consider the knowledge & passion of the teachers a strength of the academic program. A weakness would be the limited selection of electives (French was one subject that wasn’t offered when my children attended. I’m not sure if it is taught now.) Students are encouraged to reach their full potential academically & they have great support services for students needing extra help or modifications. The atmosphere was warm, inclusive & caring. Both our children who attended were well prepared for post-secondary education.
Yes, I feel there were (& are) ample extracurricular opportunities for students at CHS, of both a competitive & non-competitive nature. In addition to athletic opportunities, there are also opportunities for students to participate in the arts (such as music & drama). I do believe they provide the right context to develop well-rounded students.
CHS is a smaller school so the students don’t feel they are just a number. It has a warm, welcoming & caring environment, displayed by both staff & students. I don’t see or perceive any division between students who have different interests, as sometimes happens in other schools (for example where the athletes are the popular students & set a tone of superiority). Generally, I think most students feel accepted or welcome there.
Both of my children loved their time at CHS. They did well academically with the right amount of support from teachers. They made life-long friends there. I have recommended the school to many people - several have sent their children and have had positive experiences.
My children loved that the school is associated with a college which shares the same campus. Parental involvement is welcomed but more opportunities could be provided. Given the fact that CHS is also a boarding school, it’s more of a challenge as a certain percentage of students’ families do not live in the community.
CHS is situated in a small community about 15 minutes outside a small city. The community is very safe & engaging with the college students is encouraged, and in our experience was very beneficial.
The admission process for both our children was relatively simple. The application is moderate in length. Any questions we had were answered in a timely fashion & the advisors were very helpful.
My children attended CHS in the early 2000’s. At that time, there wasn’t a lot of career counselling offered. However, staff were very helpful in the application process to post-secondary institutions.
