This program is designed to build the following character traits:

  • Interpersonal skills: We teach many interpersonal skills including advocacy, rhetoric, an ability to effectively organize one's thoughts, an ability to listen and be heard and to honour one's opponents with effective points and counter-points. These are empowering skills that are highly relevant to life long learning.
  • Curiosity: Debate Camp fosters curiosity by creating a learning experience that is safe, welcoming, fun, and engaging. Curiosity is best served by empowering kids to take risks. We create a novel learning environment where campers can try new skills, think quickly, see opposing views, and trust teammates.

For today's youth, skills in parliamentary debate help to develop critical thinking, advocacy, listening to alternate points of view and speaking well.  Debate Camp has been engaged in this since 2002 - and will now offer our program to small groups of online participants.

  • parliamentary debate technique
  • skills in organization of thought
  • skills in case construction
  • persuasive, confident speaking
  • skills in refutation and argument re-building

Online debate workshops are designed in a fun, interactive way. Participants develop debate skills via opportunities to work together, share thinking and debate twice in each session.

Online participants co-develop cases, debate as a team and receive feedback together; often as a side - pointing out strengths of argumentation and delivery.

Our online program is a supportive place, with lots of encouragement available for those who are trying new things.  Participants are coached to honour what is being said by their opponents and welcome the efforts of others, even in competition.

All online debate partnerships and speakers opposite are grouped at an experience level that ensures the right level of challenge:

  • brand new to debate
  • typical grades 4 to 6
  • possible reluctant speaker

  • familiar with debate
  • typical grades 6 to 9
  • less reluctant speaker

  • experienced with debate
  • typical grades 8 to 10
  • accomplished speaker
