C
  • Self-regulation: After each daily challenge experience teams meet to evaluate and discuss their personal and the team's performance, successes, failures and what changes they can make for the next days' activities. Self and team reflection of experiential activities teach teens the value of Honesty.

The Sea to Summit Academy is a unique, fun, and exciting experiential educational 14-day overnight program that invites youth to learn and grow through challenging new environments, activities, and relationships.

To help teens master to successfully advance into maturity, VOS focuses on the core Five Character Traits and uses the Six key elements to enhance the character traits.

1. Team Work -> Leadership & Followership

Leadership and Followership teamwork values and skills are practiced and improved on each day. Instructors communicate the days’ plans and requirements to teen team leaders who then, in turn, works with the team to facilitate the day.

Teens are constantly immersed in the responsibility of either leadership or followership roles, and learn that leadership and Followership is a bond formed out of respect and understanding of what is right and wrong, good and bad, ethical and moral.

2. New Challenging Environment, Activities & Relationship -> Courage

Each day during the program participants are faced with new challenges such as kayaking in the sea, climbing a rock face, accepting the responsibility to lead a group up a trail.

Courage establishes a personal identity that can embrace new and increased responsibilities, opportunities and choices. Courage also creates teens' resiliency to learn from natural and logical consequences, mistakes, positive choices and successes.

3. Reflection Assessment -> Honesty

After each daily challenge experience teams meet to evaluate and discuss their personal and the team's performance, successes, failures and what changes they can make for the next days' activities.

Self and team reflection of experiential activities teaches teens the value of Honesty. The link between honesty to oneself and others also provides a way for teens to put their best efforts forward and to learn how to make choices that establish their best commitment to their learning, themselves and the team.

4. Cultural Awareness -> Patience

During the program teens will meet with and receive presentations from indigenous, forestry/logging, fishery, ski and recreational industry community leaders. The objective is to provide teens with the knowledge of how local and west coast Canadian residents live, work and socialize together and express their culture and beliefs.

To understand and become aware of the differences between another culture and oneself requires being a skilled listener, observer and a commitment of time. Plus an acceptance of change and a letting go of strongly held priorities, values and ideas.

Being able to embrace change, particularly when it involves long-held community-supported viewpoints and a requirement to sacrifice gains and privileges from those views takes Patience.

5. Promotion of United Nations Global Citizenship -> Trust

Global citizenship actions are built on Trust, that people will act in not only their best interest but additionally in the best interest of others outside of their own country and also in the best interest of the biosphere of the planet.

The Sea to Summit program provides three methods for teens to build an understanding of trust and to place trust as a cornerstone of their identity. These three are Cultural Awareness teachings by community presenters, “Leave No Trace” environmental care and protection program curriculum and a program-wide focus on Character Traits.
