Why Parents are Choosing Private Schools

Survey says . . . Here's why Ontario parents are choosing to send their children to private schools.

A new report published in May 2007 by The Fraser Institute, an independent Canadian research organization, documents the characteristics of private schools, and the characteristics and motivations of Ontario parents of private school students.

The report, Ontario's Private Schools: Who Chooses Them and Why?, was written by Deani Van Pelt, assistant professor in education at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, along with Patricia Allison and Derek Allison, both instructors in the education faculty at the University of Western Ontario.

The three-page Executive Summary notes that parents identified the following as positive reasons for choosing private schools and that the majority of surveyed parents strongly agreed that their private school had these characteristics: dedicated teachers, emphasis on academic quality and safety. Educating the whole child and development of student character were also identified as private school characteristics.
