    Curriculum pace

    Standard-enriched
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

    Academic culture

    Rigorous
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    Preschool/K curriculum

    Play-based
Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.

    Our Take

    Our Take

    SELWYN HOUSE SCHOOL

Many schools have changed considerably over their lives, and of course that's particularly true of the older schools. Selwyn House was begun in 1908 by Captain Algernon Lucas, a graduate of Selwyn College at the University of Cambridge. He was just 29 at that time, and he arrived in Canada in the same year that he graduated from Cambridge. He was, frankly, looking for a job. In Montreal, he found one, namely teaching seven boys. To say that the school has come a long way since it was founded is as much an understatement as you could ever hope to find. A visitor to Selwyn House today is impressed in all sorts of ways, and rightly so. The school is home to an exceptional academic program, and despite having begun its life in Lucas' apartment, is now housed in the kind of buildings that Lucas could only have dreamed of. The school participates in the full range of traditions, and has in turn gained notice well beyond the city of Montreal. (It even plays a role in two classics of Canadian literature, Mordecai Richler's Jacob Two Two Meets the Hooded Fang and Barney's Version.) The alumni of Selwyn House include, literally, titans of industry, including the Bronfmans and the Molsons, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and the philosopher Charles Taylor, among many other notable Canadians, past and present.

    BRIERCREST CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

Caronport was established in 1946, and at a property that was dedicated as the new location of the Briercrest Bible Institute on Canada Day of that year. The school remains in partnership with Briercrest College and Briercrest Seminary, with all contributing to the same foundational goals of offering leadership in Christian education. Throughout the school’s history, the program has remained innovative and forward looking, something which it retains today. The student population is small and close-knit, and the school reaps the benefits of its size, namely a very focused learning environment, a clear sense of belonging and engagement, and a high level of individual attention. The boarding program supports international learners through guidance and ESL. The ideal student is one able to thrive in a challenging yet supportive academic environment.

    BRIERCREST CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

    Message

At Selwyn House, we pride ourselves on preparing young men to be respectful, resilient and hard working. We want them to pursue fulfilled, balanced and purposeful lives while always being true to themselves, true to others, true to their school and true to the world.

Our culture is one of excellence in all areas, and this ideal is clearly demonstrated each and every day by our wonderful faculty. They are true professionals, and together with our students and their parents, form a strong and caring community where each student’s strengths are recognized and celebrated.

A Selwyn House graduate is a young man who cares. He is prepared academically, he is a lifelong learner, and he has developed a true sense of self-awareness.

Nous croyons que nous pouvons amener votre fils à relever les défis du 21e siècle et à apporter une contribution importante et précieuse à la société.

I encourage you to visit our school and to discover for yourself the unique qualities of the Selwyn House experience. It remains impressive.

At Briercrest Christian Academy, we are committed to providing students with an educational experience that will develop every aspect of their being to their fullest potential. Jesus teaches us that His greatest commandments are to "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind … [and to] love your neighbour as yourself'" (Matthew 22:36, NIV). We believe that God has called us to address the whole person through a program of strong academics, varied extracurricular options, and intentional spiritual nurturing. This is the kind of education that can change you, and then change your world through you.

As a body of learning, we are part of each student's journey of faith and career preparation – not just a destination point. Briercrest Christian Academy, an important facet of Briercrest College and Seminary, provides a unique learning environment where students enjoy spiritual, academic, and extracurricular activities that enables us more fully to walk this journey with them.

It is our deepest hope and prayer that this unique school will become a place where you can be called closer to faith and, in turn, draw your world closer to Christ.

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

      SELWYN HOUSE SCHOOL

Liberal Arts curricula share with traditional programs their emphasis on core knowledge-acquisition, but tend to borrow more best practices from the progressive approach. A Liberal Arts program might still feature group work and projects, for example, contrary to the more singular emphasis on tests and essays at a Traditional program.

      BRIERCREST CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.

      SELWYN HOUSE SCHOOL

At Selwyn House School, we are proud of our strong and enriched academic program. We challenge students to learn, to study, and to read, write and think well. We do this in an environment targeted to boys’ education through hands-on and action-oriented activities. We understand boys and how they learn best. As a small school, the opportunities to contribute are great. We have an inclusive atmosphere where students develop positive attitudes to participation, personal performance, teamwork, and fair play. In all grades, students study the French language in addition to another subject in French. The faculty values and encourages learning and experiences in French. At Selwyn House School, students learn to think critically and to express themselves clearly in both languages. They will conduct and analyze experiments, solve math problems, learn to make mathematical conjectures, read contemporary and classic novels, write critical essays, discuss current events, and debate political and social issues. Selwyn House School provides an excellent academic program that is supplemented with exceptional athletic, artistic, and experiential education.

      BRIERCREST CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

At Briercrest Christian Academy, a Christian perspective is infused in everything we do. We provide a private Christian school experience while offering the best of public education. Since BCA holds associate status with Prairie South School Division our curriculum is held to provincial standards and graduates meet all provincial regulations to receive a Saskatchewan High School Diploma. In addition to the Saskatchewan credit requirements, students take a Christian Ethics class at every grade level. As well, students in our Reach Ahead track have the option of taking Briercrest College courses. While our primary focus is academic, Briercrest Christian Academy places a significant emphasis on co-curricular activities. We offer numerous athletic, fine arts, and service opportunities with the majority of our students involved in one or more co-curricular activity. This is an integral part of what we do at BCA as we support students to grow holistically. We specifically enable students to participate in a wide variety of activities with our unique semester system involving two periods per day and five terms within this academic year.

As curriculum is planned, the themes for each grade are specifically chosen to be relevant and engaging for that age group. Students in grade 9 learn about unusual characters, friendship, and fairness as they study literature. In Grade 10, the themes of the unknown, challenges, decisions, and the environment are at the forefront. The selection of works in Grade 11 are centered around the themes of recollection and anticipation. Grade 12 students will study literature based on the diverse voices within Canada and around the world. Works will be drawn from both Christian and secular sources in an effort to portray a wide variety of response to the human condition and experience. It is intended that the exploration of various worldviews from a Christian perspective will prepare students for the world beyond the classroom, as well as postsecondary education.

These dialogues are contextualized within a Biblical perspective to help students create transferrable skills between the classroom, the Christian faith and their real-life experiences. By incorporating the Christian viewpoint and drawing on real-world experiences in our program, students learn to think with a biblical worldview, engage critically with written, visual and auditory sources and interact with the world around them in a way that prepares them for postsecondary education and experiences outside of the classroom.

What the school says about their computers and technology program

        SELWYN HOUSE SCHOOL

Selwyn House School maintains a strong commitment to physical education and athletics as part of the student’s overall educational development. Students may choose to compete inter-scholastically or opt for recreational and instructional programs. Both ensure that our students are physically active and challenged. To accommodate our programs, the school rents 16 outside facilities and benefits from the leadership of 28 full- and part-time staff members. This extraordinary level of adult participation helps students understand that a complete education involves both body and mind. The school’s objectives are ambitious. We strive to foster healthy attitudes toward play and to encourage a robust belief in hard work. Students are taught that athletics involves more than just physical activity. It is an experience that can provide lifelong lessons about effort, teamwork and fairness.

        BRIERCREST CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

Our Physical Education program supports student achievement of curricular outcomes through inquiring for healthy decision making, balancing the dimensions of wellness and well-being, embracing a comprehensive school community health approach, incorporating service learning, and designing a personal plan for well-being. We construct understanding through inquiry. Inquiry learning provides students with opportunities to build knowledge, abilities, and inquiring habits of mind that lead to deeper understanding of their world and human experience. Students who engage in inquiry construct knowledge and deep understanding rather than passively receiving information, encounter alternative perspectives and differing ideas that transform prior knowledge and experience into deep understandings, are directly involved in the discovery of new knowledge rather than passively receiving information, transfer new knowledge and skills to new circumstances, and take ownership and responsibility for their ongoing learning and master of curriculum content and skills.

      Our Take

      Our Take

      SELWYN HOUSE SCHOOL

Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.

Our early French Immersion Kindergarten builds upon the belief that young children acquire a second language with ease and are able to use the language as a means of communicating their ideas, feelings, and opinions in an authentic environment. The program is designed to help students learn about themselves and interact effectively and appropriately with others. It provides a solid preparation for Grade One. Class size is from 12 to 15 students per class. English language activities take place daily. Physical education is taught six times per 10-day cycle (40-minute periods). Children regularly visit the library and computer labs.

      Our Take

      Our Take

      SELWYN HOUSE SCHOOL

      BRIERCREST CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
