    Curriculum pace

    Standard-enriched
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

    Academic culture

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    Waldorf
Highly group-oriented and with a strong emphasis on creative and imaginative play, Waldorf preschool and Kindergarten programs have very little to no emphasis on academics. A Waldorf environment will often feel more like a home than a traditional classroom -- the goal being to instill comfort and and a sense of predictability in students’ day. This emphasis on comfort and predictability also manifests through a heavy use of repetition: for example, teachers might read the same story multiple days in a row. Waldorf schools ask parents to refrain from offering children TV or computers at home, and aim to develop in children a connection to the natural world. Our Take

    TORONTO WALDORF SCHOOL

Not all Waldorf programs are created the same, and the Toronto Waldorf School is a great example of that. As every school, it has a character of its own, a product of the community it serves. It offers a full preschool through Grade 12 program, throughout displaying a commitment to active learning, process over product, and cross-curricular, collaborative learning. Families that enroll typically are also attracted by an overt attention to ethics, environmental stewardship, interpersonal values, and the encouragement of individual expression. While the curriculum is strong, it’s often that values piece that tips the balance. The ideal student is one who will thrive in an interactive learning environment that builds from the students' talents, interests, and curiosities.

    WALDORF ACADEMY

We often consider the ideal student for a certain educational setting, though with Waldorf schools, it's important to also consider the ideal parent. Instruction student directed; benchmarks are less important than engagement. Multiple intelligences, multiple-sensory learning, cross-curricular instruction, visual learning—it's perhaps the epitome of what we think of as alternative education: constructivist rather than didactic. Waldorf Academy is one of the first of its kind in Canada, and was created when a group of parents decided to come together to create the kind of school that they wanted for their children. It's grown since then, and the organization and infrastructure has been formalized as well, including the creation of a purpose-built learning environment. Nevertheless, the core concept remains. The successful student is one who thrives in an interactive, transactional, arts-enriched setting. The ideal parent is one who sees the value in a constructivist approach, narrative-based assessment (letter grades are given in Grade 6 and up) and who prizes a considered and careful approach to the use of technology.

What does school_name do differently or uniquely well?

What do you do differently and uniquely well?

    TORONTO WALDORF SCHOOL

"One of the defining strengths of the Waldorf curriculum lies in its integration of art and academics. At TWS, we seamlessly incorporate academic learning into everyday life, fostering connections between abstract concepts and their practical applications. Central to Waldorf philosophy is the belief in holistic education, where students are not only intellectually challenged but also encouraged to cultivate their intrinsic curiosity and creativity. Our diverse performance arts programs—ranging from music and eurythmy to fencing and circus arts—further enrich the learning experience. At TWS, students are inspired by a broad spectrum of classes that ignite their passion and creativity in ways that are truly transformative."

    WALDORF ACADEMY

"At Waldorf Academy, our approach to learning engages the head, heart, and hands—or thinking, feeling, and doing. This is the basis on which Waldorf teachers nurture and engage each child through a curriculum that integrates academics, arts, and practical skills. In our frenetic world, where pushing children to “hurry up or fall behind” has become the norm, the Waldorf approach is an antidote: childhood is something to savour, and adolescence is an opportunity for self-understanding as well as academic development. Waldorf-educated children enjoy full and rich childhoods, and gain the experiences they need to become healthy, self-actualized and confident individuals."

What tradeoffs has school_name made to serve families in this way?

What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

    TORONTO WALDORF SCHOOL

"Waldorf schools offer a distinctive educational approach that differs significantly from other private schools, and these differences involve some trade-offs.:

Academics vs. Developmental Readiness: The focus in TWS kindergarten is on play, imagination, and social development. Standardized testing is not used until High School, and narrative reports are completed in Lower School as an alternative.

Technology Use: TWS focuses on minimal/no screen time vs. early technology integration.

Philosophical Consistency: TWS offers a unified and immersive educational experience, but some parents may find the Steiner-based philosophy too esoteric."

    WALDORF ACADEMY

"At a Waldorf school, education is not measured only by competition and test scores, but is viewed as a life-long journey. Our younger students are given qualitative report cards; formal marking for our older students starts in Middle School. All our students are encouraged to measure themselves—when the time comes—against their own progress, and to build the critical ability to self-assess as well as be assessed."

What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

    TORONTO WALDORF SCHOOL

"Key junctures that have shaped Toronto Waldorf School include our longstanding commitment to the principles of Waldorf education, which has guided our development and curriculum. The cultivation of a diverse community focused on inclusivity and community engagement has also been pivotal. Additionally, the achievements of our alumni reflect the effectiveness and evolution of our approach, inspiring continued growth and adaptation to meet modern educational needs."

    WALDORF ACADEMY

"Waldorf education, founded by Rudolf Steiner in 1919, applies a unique view of child development to learning, offering a welcome alternative to mainstream education. Over the past century, Waldorf education has evolved in many ways, while remaining true to its founding principles: a key feature of Waldorf education is that it must always innovate and stay culturally and socially relevant. Waldorf education is the fastest-growing independent educational system in the world, with over 2,000 schools in 70 countries worldwide, many of which are in North America. When we meet with prospective students, we also want to get to know you, their parents/guardians. At Waldorf Academy, school is a family affair: we understand that children learn best when the adults in their lives are invested and involved in their education. Our strong community culture, volunteer ethic, and partnership with parents is integral to our approach, and tracks with student wellbeing and success. For us, it is not sim"

What type of student is a good fit for your school?

    TORONTO WALDORF SCHOOL

"Toronto Waldorf School is set on 18 acres of picturesque land, encompassing fields, forests, and a ravine. We strongly encourage outdoor play in all seasons, with students engaging in activities outside even in the rain or snow. Except in extreme weather conditions, TWS promotes outdoor exploration, particularly for children in Kindergarten and Lower School. As the seasons change, students not only enjoy outdoor play but also engage with the scientific principles behind these seasonal shifts in their everyday learning.

The diverse range of subjects offered in both Lower School and High School provides students with a well-rounded education throughout the year. In addition to academic pursuits, TWS integrates cultural festivals and histories into the curriculum, with a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity at the core of our values."

    WALDORF ACADEMY

"Waldorf Academy welcomes students from all walks of life and all ethnic backgrounds. Our curriculum opens doors and keeps them open by offering broad, diverse and well-rounded Waldorf programming that resonates deeply with most children. We welcome a range of temperaments and talents: shy children are supported in becoming more extroverted; studious students are encouraged in arts and sports; active individuals are given opportunities to build strong academic skills and self regulation. Our multifaceted, communal approach to learning naturally meets a range of learning styles, and our unique curriculum is specifically designed to correspond to the stages in child development."

Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing school_name?

Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

    TORONTO WALDORF SCHOOL

"Students at TWS spend a significant amount of time outdoors, and parents should anticipate that outdoor play will occur daily, regardless of weather conditions, including rain and snow. TWS is a non-denominational institution; however, we celebrate a diverse range of festivals and holidays throughout the year, reflecting various cultural traditions. The school adheres to the guidelines set by York Region Public Health, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, masks were worn in compliance with regulatory requirements. Our school is deeply committed to promoting diversity, inclusivity, and equality, ensuring that all students are treated with respect for their gender and sexual identities."

    WALDORF ACADEMY

"Waldorf Academy is the right choice for your family if you are looking for a place that will help your child find joy in learning, build strong social skills as well as academic abilities, and thrive in the world. If you have a predetermined path for your child where the destination is more important than the learning journey itself, other schools might be a better fit for your family. At Waldorf Academy, we spend ample time outdoors, minimize unnecessary technology, engage in creative academics, and foster strong relationships. We value individuality in the context of community. Our approach is child-centred, but not child-led. We believe in communal, wonder-generated learning rather than individual, inquiry-based education. We invite you to visit Waldorf Academy where you’ll see children who delight in being allowed to live in the moment, explore nature, develop critical thinking skills and build self-understanding, all while getting a first class education."

    Our Mission

The mission of the Toronto Waldorf School is to meet each student through a unique, challenging educational experience that encourages wonder, fosters inspiration, and leads to fulfillment of life purpose.

    Our Values

At TWS, the Anthroposophical understanding of child development guides the educational program.

We hold a reverence for childhood.

We have the courage to do what is right for our children and our community.

Respect, trust, and authenticity are the foundation for all our relationships.

The diversity of our community is important to us.

We embrace the ideals of servant leadership.

We are stewards of our green space and our Environment.

Parents work together with the faculty and administration towards our common goals.

If you are looking for a school where teachers respect the stages in child development, where the goal is to inspire learning not just deliver content, and where wonder and imagination are vital tools in engaging students, then you should find out more about Waldorf Academy.

At Waldorf Academy, our academic curriculum is enriched by recesses that are 45 minutes long; some afternoons are reserved for nature walks; children and students are given time to understand themselves and the world around them. We believe that young people benefit when they experience the world as an amazing place. Our low-tech environment is a result of our belief that there will be plenty of time for virtual reality after children are acquainted with actual reality. It works: you can ask our grade 7 & 8 students about their week-long wilderness canoe trip—but you will have to wait until they get back... there’s no phone service in real world adventure.

I invite you to visit our website and school to learn more about our community and curriculum. Waldorf Academy offers education that makes sense.

Waldorf schools are available from preschool to Grade 12, though they are most popular at the younger ages. Waldorf schools are unmistakably "progressive". Sometimes incorrectly conflated with Montessori schools, Waldorf schools focus on developing the "whole child" - emphasizing collaborative, hands-on learning, along with the arts and music, which are integrated into other areas of study.

What the school says about their curriculum

      TORONTO WALDORF SCHOOL

The Waldorf curriculum revolves around child development and the key concept of "doing the right thing at the right time." An emphasis on a three-fold approach, integrating "head, heart and hands" is a fundamental component in all classes. Cross-curricular connections are made wherever possible, using arts, movement, music and drama in the learning process, bringing greater engagement and emotional connection to the child's experience.

      WALDORF ACADEMY

Waldorf Academy offers an academic curriculum enriched through hands-on activities and unique experiences. Our interdisciplinary approach to mastering subject areas across the academic spectrum encourages children to make connections and deepen learning. Waldorf Academy’s E.Q. approach is designed to enhance a child’s sense of connection to others and the world, and to grow spiritually. We encourage students to take risks, reach beyond their comfort zones, and grow in their own way. We work with students' natural curiosity to facilitate joyful and well-balanced engagement with the learning process, and to cultivate a life-long love of learning.

Discovery Math turns traditional math on its head: it frequently begins by introducing a novel problem to students, and works its way back to “discovering” a method of solving the problem. The goal is to ground mathematical procedures and algorithms firmly in their applications, and to challenge students to think critically about how they might go about solving the problem right from the beginning. Generally associated with the “Chicago Math” movement and related Everyday Math textbooks (Grades 1 to 6), Discovery math spends less classroom time mastering established algorithms and more time getting students invested in and thinking critically about novel mathematical problems and concepts. In this sense Discovery Math aims to establish conceptual and applied understand before procedural understanding.

Balanced reading programs are typically Whole Language programs with supplementary phonics training. This training might be incidental, or it might take the form of mini-lessons.

        WALDORF ACADEMY

Whole Language reading programs eschew sublexical (under the word-level) training, focusing instead on getting students to infer and guess at words based on their understanding of the larger meaning of the sentence (“context-clues”). Students are given ample opportunity to read actual literature (age-appropriate) along with strategies for using semantic-based clues to pronounce unrecognized words.

Inquiry-based science emphasizes teaching science as a way of thinking or practice, and therefore tries to get students “doing” science as much as possible -- and not just “learning” it. Students still learn foundational scientific ideas and content (and build on this knowledge progressively); however, relative to expository science instruction, inquiry-based programs have students spend more time developing and executing their own experiments (empirical and theoretical). Students are frequently challenged to develop critical and scientific-thinking skills by developing their own well-reasoned hypothesis and finding ways to test those hypotheses. Projects and experiments are emphasized over textbook learning. Skills are emphasized over breadth of knowledge.

Digital literacy is understood to be a legitimate skill in the 21st century, but not one that should distract from teaching the subject at hand, or more fundamental skills and literacies. The idea is today’s students, being “digital natives”, are likely exposed to computers and new media enough outside the classroom: the role of the school, rather, should be to develop competencies that may otherwise get missed.

The Waldorf perspective is that computer exposure should not be based on capability but on developmental appropriateness. Computers and digital technology are not part of the early grades curriculum, although mechanical technology and the practical arts are incorporated at all levels. In our school, Grade 7 and above can access to our computer lab and time in the lab is balanced with Cyber Civics- discussions about the role of technology in our lives, social media and how one can trust information on the web. We strive to give our students to tools to understand the history of computing and how to keep the human being at the centre of our relationship to technology.

We offer cyber civics in Middle School. We use minimal screens in the teaching process.

TORONTO WALDORF SCHOOL

Toronto Waldorf School's early years programs have a play-based approach and learning through experience, art and movement. Healthy rhythm and routine, ample outdoor time as well as time for rest are built into each day. Participation in crafts, painting and chores are some of the daily activities of the preschool and kindergarten child. A rich oral story telling tradition, including puppet shows, help build the young child's language capacities as well as imaginative thinking.

      WALDORF ACADEMY

Waldorf Academy's early childhood programs are based on child development and imitation. Science, numeracy and literacy are fostered through real experiences in cooking, nature walks, building and art as well as storytelling, poetry, singing and recitation. Movement and self directed play as well as emotional intelligence are high priorities. There are group activities as well as small group and individual activities. Healthy physical development of the child is a critical prerequisite for proper mathematical and scientific education. Self directed play promotes questioning, problem solving, higher level thinking skills, discovery, self-directed activity and speech.

    Learning disabilities
    Dyslexia (Language-Based Learning Disability)
This is a learning disability that can limit a child's ability to read and learn. It can have a variety of traits. A few of the main ones are impaired phonological awareness and decoding, problems with orthographic coding, and auditory short-term memory impairment.
    Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)
This is a sound differentiation disorder involving problems with reading, comprehension, and language.
    Dyscalculia
This is a kind of specific learning disability in math. Kids with this math disorder have problems with calculation. They may also have problems with math-related concepts such as time and money.
    Dysgraphia
This is a kind of specific learning disability in writing. It involves problems with handwriting, spelling, and organizing ideas.
    Language Processing Disorder
This is characterized by having extreme difficulty understanding what is heard and expressing what one wants to say. These disorders affect the area of the brain that controls language processing.
    Nonverbal Learning Disorders (NLD)
These involve difficulties interpreting non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions and body language. They're usually characterized by a significant discrepancy between higher verbal skills and weaker motor, visual-spatial, and social skills.
    Visual Perceptual/Visual Motor Deficit
A characteristic seen in people with learning disabilities such as Dysgraphia or Non-verbal LD. It can result in missing subtle differences in shapes or printed letters, losing place frequently, struggles with cutting, holding pencil too tightly, or poor eye/hand coordination.
    Developmental
    Autism
Refers to a range of conditions that involve challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, and speech and nonverbal communication. They also involve unique strengths and differences. For instance, there are persons with both low- and high-functioning autism (some claim the latter is identical to Asperger's syndrome).
    Asperger's Syndrome
On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour.
    Down syndrome
his is associated with impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth, and a particular set of facial characteristics.
    Intellectual disability
This is a condition characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning (e.g., reasoning, learning, and problem solving). Intellectual disabilities are also known as general learning disabilities (and used to be referred to as a kind of mental retardation).
    Williams syndrome
This is a rare genetic disorder present at birth. It is characterized by intellectual disabilities or learning problems, unique facial features, and cardiovascular problems.
    Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is an umbrella term used to describe the range of effects that can occur in an individual whose mother consumed alcohol during pregnancy.
