    Curriculum pace

    Standard-enriched
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

    Academic culture

    Rigorous
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

    Academic
Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

    Our Take

    Our Take

    TRAFALGAR CASTLE SCHOOL

It really is a castle, and the interiors are as striking as the exterior: turrets, arches, wood and stone. The school is also genuinely old, having been founded in 1874, though the building pre-dates the school. Yet, as ever, appearances can be deceiving, or at least can risk being made too much of. Trafalgar administration has, throughout its long history, consistently revised the curriculum and programs with an intention of providing, in a very literal sense, the best the world has to offer. That includes the adoption of the Singapore math and science curricula; Mandarin instruction; and writing instruction based on the program developed at the University of Chicago. A dedication to real-world learning has been built into the curriculum formally through the Beyond the Classroom initiative, which makes use of local resources and expertise, guided by the students' personal curiosities. Trafalgar offers an up-to-date, creative, and intentional program for girls preparing for university.

    ACADéMIE MARIE-CLAIRE

AMC sets its sights very high, and well it should. The academic program is strong, and overtly grounded in an empathetic world view, with an emphasis on providing reasoned leadership. Those three things are perhaps the principal draws for the families that enroll. AMC was founded by Marie-Claire Martin, the child of diplomats, and that international experience has been central to school’s development. After an initial period of growth, the school today hits what many feel is the sweet spot: large enough to be able to offer a full range of extracurriculars, while small enough to maintain a strong sense of place and community. The breadth of the language program, and the provision of an authentically bilingual environment, is also a draw.

    Message

Welcome from the Head of School

For a start, there is no other all-girls day and boarding school like us in Canada. We have been at the forefront of girls’ education for almost 150 years. At 240 students from Grade 4 to Grade 12, we are small by design. That means every girl is recognized and honoured for the individual she is. We believe the best entry point to a large and complex world is a warm and personal learning environment with ample opportunities for personal discovery and growth.

You want your daughter to be known and cared for while she pursues her dream to design a zero-emission engine, work in international medicine, write young adult fiction, or whatever other aspiration she holds in her heart. And because she is an individual with unique talents and passions, you know she will flourish within a small, welcoming community that offers an exceptional education and provides for her personal growth.

Sometimes we say, “there’s no such thing as a Trafalgar girl,” because so many different girls of diverse backgrounds and interests thrive here. But we also know exactly what a Trafalgar girl is: engaged in her learning, interested in her world and making a difference in her community. Not all girls arrive that way, but our responsive educational environment ensures that she will feel known by her teachers, supported by her classmates and energized with a sense of belonging. Most of all, she will discover the power of her own voice here.

Trafalgar Castle offers an all-girls education that unites tradition with innovation. We care deeply about how girls learn and offer the experiences they need to build critical thinking, creativity, confidence and leadership. Today’s young women are entering a fast-changing world that demands much of them. The Trafalgar experience prepares them to live with purpose and lead with conviction wherever their future takes them.

Our graduates are ready for the world. They leave the Castle with the confidence and vision they need to live lives of consequence and courage. And they join a network of talented and generous alumnae around the world who embrace them warmly and guide them wisely.

Each year, 100% of our students are accepted to their preferred university destinations. They excel in highly competitive programs and succeed in their chosen fields after graduation. No matter where their university journey takes them, they carry the Trafalgar difference in their hearts.

We would love to meet your daughter.

    Dr. Leanne Foster, Ph.D.

    Head of School

    Dear Reader,

I  want to thank you for taking the time to consider Académie Marie-Claire as the school of choice for your child.

In doing so, you will be looking into one of top academically recognized schools in Quebec and in Canada.  Though the Académie is noted for being the only Canadian school to have produced an international champion in mathematics',  its students consistently earn noteworthy accomplishments in academia.  Académie Marie-Claire has remained steadfast in promoting the acquisition of knowledge, in promulgating the advancement of education, and in offering the support necessary for students to reach their full potential.

Respect, courtesy and diligence are the cornerstone upon which the philosophy of Académie Marie-Claire is entrenched. It is a philosophy that calls for total commitment and dedication by its staff for one single purpose, and one single purpose alone, offering a warm, supportive, rich and caring environment where self-reliance and habits of lifelong learning are built. The ultimate goal of this philosophy is to foster in students a love for learning, to promote understanding and to serve society

With the knowledge that every child is a precious jewel bringing his/her own glow to this world; a bright star shining on the world; a person with innate intelligence in need of cultivation and nurturing; that an enriched environment fosters greater knowledge; that academic excellence and athletic abilities have their place, expectations and daily life have to be guided by lasting moral conviction.

As such, the Académie is more than a place of academic learning. It is a place where participants learn to collaborate; where life-long skills in human relations are brought to fruition; where respect and collaboration lead to greater understanding and improved performance; where future leaders are molded and carved.

You are invited to visit the Académie and hope to welcome you as part of our extended family in the future.

    Henry Zephirin

Liberal Arts curricula share with traditional programs their emphasis on core knowledge-acquisition, but tend to borrow more best practices from the progressive approach. A Liberal Arts program might still feature group work and projects, for example, contrary to the more singular emphasis on tests and essays at a Traditional program.

      TRAFALGAR CASTLE SCHOOL

Trafalgar Castle School offers a rigorous university preparatory curriculum from Grades 4 through 12. Our focus is to prepare our young women for post-secondary education through courses that emphasize the development of effective communication and inquiry skills, the ability to access and evaluate information, and develop self-assessment skills. We use information technology to deliver appropriate components of the curriculum and in the process encourage mastery of the technology skills essential for current and future success. Our courses meet and exceed Ontario Ministry of Education requirements and are delivered by a highly competent and dedicated faculty. Current research supports learning in a small-school environment, which enables our teachers to engage their students and support them as they achieve their true potential. Trafalgar Castle School is inspected by the Ontario Ministry of Education, accredited by the Canadian Educational Standards Institute and a member of the Conference of Independent Schools (Ontario), the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools and an associate member of the National Association of Independent Schools (Associate Member U.S.A.).

Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.

Programs that balance systematic and process approaches equally likely have an emphasis on giving young students ample opportunities to write, while providing supplementary class-wide instruction in grammar, parts of sentences, and various writing strategies.

        ACADéMIE MARIE-CLAIRE

The systematic approach to teaching beginner writing focuses on directly imparting explicit sentence construction strategies, along with planning, revising, and editing skills. Students are asked to learn these explicit strategies and skills and practice them before applying them in more holistic writing assignments. Grammar and parts of sentences tend to have a central role in systematic writing instruction.

Our students learn to develop effective thesis and supportive ideas based upon the adapted University of Chicago writing program. Through use of selected referencing, students build sound writing with the ultimate goal of refined expository writing.

        ACADéMIE MARIE-CLAIRE

In the area of language acquisition, Academie Marie-Claire pioneered the teaching of multiple language options as a choice at the pre-school, kindergarten and primary levels. Spanish, Italian or Mandarin language courses are taught as a third language as early as kindergarten and as part of the regular curriculum. Each child must expand his/her knowledge in a third language. In the area of primary language development, the enriched bilingual program in French and English continues to produce students who surpass their peers in ability and performance by graduation time. This success is true also in other subject matters resulting in students from the Academie representing Canada at competitions of international stature at home as well as abroad

        Our take: literature approach type

        TRAFALGAR CASTLE SCHOOL

In traditional literature programs students focus on decoding the mechanics of texts: plot, characterization, and themes. These texts tend to include a balance of contemporary and “classic” literature. When studying a past work, students investigate its historical context -- but only insofar as this adds understanding to the work itself. Past works are therefore studied “on their own terms”, and not merely as historical artifacts to be deconstructed: traditional literature programs are firmly rooted in the humanities, and carry the belief that great literature can reveal fundamental and universal truths about the human condition. These programs emphasize class discussions and critical essay writing, and aim to develop in students critical thinking, communication skills, and a cultivated taste and ethos.

        ACADéMIE MARIE-CLAIRE

These literature programs draw in equal measure from “Traditional” and “Social Justice” programs.

The Thematic approach organizes the curriculum around certain themes or cultural universals. Students might spend time focused on food. Then they might focus on transportation or government, and so on.

        ACADéMIE MARIE-CLAIRE

Usually focused on teaching history and geography at an early age, the core knowledge approach uses story, drama, reading, and discussion to teach about significant people, places, and events. Breadth of content and knowledge is emphasized. The curriculum is often organized according to the underlying logic of the content: history might be taught sequentially, for example (as students move through the grades).

Our take: computers and technology approach type

        TRAFALGAR CASTLE SCHOOL

A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.

        ACADéMIE MARIE-CLAIRE

Computers are used in the classroom from time to time, but integrating technology into everything students do is not a dominant focus. Digital literacy is understood to be a legitimate skill in the 21st century, but not one that should distract from teaching the subject at hand, or more fundamental skills and literacies. The idea is today’s students, being “digital natives”, are likely exposed to computers and new media enough outside the classroom: the role of the school, rather, should be to develop competencies that may otherwise get missed.

      TRAFALGAR CASTLE SCHOOL

The distinction of AMC resides in its philosophy which permeates through the mission, the objectives, the curriculum, social life and all other issues related tto the wellbeing of the student population, staff and parents. The program at Academie Marie-Claire is departmentalized. Each class and each subject is taught by a “specialist”. The concept of a “Home Room” in its traditional meaning does not exist. This is a fundamental and critical nuance that crystallizes the approach to teaching from preschool to primary.
