    Our Take

    Our Take

    TRAFALGAR CASTLE SCHOOL

It really is a castle, and the interiors are as striking as the exterior: turrets, arches, wood and stone. The school is also genuinely old, having been founded in 1874, though the building pre-dates the school. Yet, as ever, appearances can be deceiving, or at least can risk being made too much of. Trafalgar administration has, throughout its long history, consistently revised the curriculum and programs with an intention of providing, in a very literal sense, the best the world has to offer. That includes the adoption of the Singapore math and science curricula; Mandarin instruction; and writing instruction based on the program developed at the University of Chicago. A dedication to real-world learning has been built into the curriculum formally through the Beyond the Classroom initiative, which makes use of local resources and expertise, guided by the students' personal curiosities. Trafalgar offers an up-to-date, creative, and intentional program for girls preparing for university.

    Message

Welcome from the Head of School

For a start, there is no other all-girls day and boarding school like us in Canada. We have been at the forefront of girls’ education for almost 150 years. At 240 students from Grade 4 to Grade 12, we are small by design. That means every girl is recognized and honoured for the individual she is. We believe the best entry point to a large and complex world is a warm and personal learning environment with ample opportunities for personal discovery and growth.

You want your daughter to be known and cared for while she pursues her dream to design a zero-emission engine, work in international medicine, write young adult fiction, or whatever other aspiration she holds in her heart. And because she is an individual with unique talents and passions, you know she will flourish within a small, welcoming community that offers an exceptional education and provides for her personal growth.

Sometimes we say, “there’s no such thing as a Trafalgar girl,” because so many different girls of diverse backgrounds and interests thrive here. But we also know exactly what a Trafalgar girl is: engaged in her learning, interested in her world and making a difference in her community. Not all girls arrive that way, but our responsive educational environment ensures that she will feel known by her teachers, supported by her classmates and energized with a sense of belonging. Most of all, she will discover the power of her own voice here.

Trafalgar Castle offers an all-girls education that unites tradition with innovation. We care deeply about how girls learn and offer the experiences they need to build critical thinking, creativity, confidence and leadership. Today’s young women are entering a fast-changing world that demands much of them. The Trafalgar experience prepares them to live with purpose and lead with conviction wherever their future takes them.

Our graduates are ready for the world. They leave the Castle with the confidence and vision they need to live lives of consequence and courage. And they join a network of talented and generous alumnae around the world who embrace them warmly and guide them wisely.

Each year, 100% of our students are accepted to their preferred university destinations. They excel in highly competitive programs and succeed in their chosen fields after graduation. No matter where their university journey takes them, they carry the Trafalgar difference in their hearts.

We would love to meet your daughter.

    Dr. Leanne Foster, Ph.D.

    Head of School

    Dear Prospective Parents and Students,

Thank you for your interest in our school. Burlington Royal Arts Academy is a Private Arts-Academic high school located in the heart of Burlington. We encourage and foster learning in a creative, supportive, and challenging environment. Our focus is on assisting our students to achieve academic excellence while developing a passion for the arts. Our philosophy is to work closely with our students to select a curriculum that challenges them artistically, meets their educational requirements and goals, and introduces them to artists working in their field of interest.

In the coming years, the Burlington Royal Arts Academy will develop as a leader in arts education in our local area. By providing courses in Instrumental and Vocal Music, Dance, Drama, and Visual Arts, taught by industry experts, students will develop their portfolios and gain confidence in audition skills for post-secondary success. We are committed to nurturing and advancing the arts through inclusion and equal opportunity across all aspects of our programming.

Currently, we have students attending our school from China and from the Burlington area. We expect more students from the local region and other parts of the world in coming years. Not every student attending our school is solely focused on the arts. We have an outstanding academic program with very small class sizes. These class sizes will remain small as we continue to expand our program alongside a dedicated and professional teaching staff in the delivery of the provincial curriculum.

We would love to schedule a school tour for you to see our newly renovated classrooms, music practice rooms and dance studio. We are excited about the opportunity that an Arts-Academic high school will bring to the students of Burlington and the surrounding area.

Please do not hesitate to call me at 289-245-1534 OR email me at [email protected]

We look forward to seeing you at one of our future master class workshops and having you as a member of our school community.

    With Regards,

    Brian Quistberg

    Principal, B.P.E., B.Ed., OCT

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

      TRAFALGAR CASTLE SCHOOL

Liberal Arts curricula share with traditional programs their emphasis on core knowledge-acquisition, but tend to borrow more best practices from the progressive approach. A Liberal Arts program might still feature group work and projects, for example, contrary to the more singular emphasis on tests and essays at a Traditional program.

      BURLINGTON ROYAL ARTS ACADEMY

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.

What the school says about their curriculum

      TRAFALGAR CASTLE SCHOOL

Trafalgar Castle School offers a rigorous university preparatory curriculum from Grades 4 through 12. Our focus is to prepare our young women for post-secondary education through courses that emphasize the development of effective communication and inquiry skills, the ability to access and evaluate information, and develop self-assessment skills. We use information technology to deliver appropriate components of the curriculum and in the process encourage mastery of the technology skills essential for current and future success. Our courses meet and exceed Ontario Ministry of Education requirements and are delivered by a highly competent and dedicated faculty. Current research supports learning in a small-school environment, which enables our teachers to engage their students and support them as they achieve their true potential. Trafalgar Castle School is inspected by the Ontario Ministry of Education, accredited by the Canadian Educational Standards Institute and a member of the Conference of Independent Schools (Ontario), the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools and an associate member of the National Association of Independent Schools (Associate Member U.S.A.).

      BURLINGTON ROYAL ARTS ACADEMY

Our school is focused on encouraging students to pursue an academic secondary school education while nurturing their artistic passion. We deliver the provincial curriculum in a positive and encouraging atmosphere so that each student can reach their full potential. Some of our core curriculum subjects (Math, Science) are steeped in traditional methods of teaching and assessment to prepare students for post-secondary institutions.
