(4) Student Experience
Both of my boys attended Bannockburn—one from Toddler through Grade 6 and the other from Primary through Grade 6. Overall, their experience was very positive. Bannockburn set them up extremely well academically, and both transitioned to middle school with confidence and strong study habits. What they liked most was the sense of community. Because it’s a smaller school, they had lots of chances to step up and get involved in meaningful ways—speaking at assemblies, mentoring younger students, and helping plan and budget for their grad trip. Programs like the Montessori Model United Nations were especially valuable, giving them real experience with research, writing, and presenting at a conference in New York City. The teachers held high expectations but were also supportive when extra help was needed. My boys felt challenged but never lost. Bannockburn really felt like a second family for them, and they made close friendships that they still have today.
Why Bannockburn Independent School?
We chose Bannockburn because our older son, who is a highly sensitive child, was struggling in a very large junior kindergarten class elsewhere. The size and pace of the classroom were overwhelming for him, so we began looking for a school with smaller classes and a calmer environment. What stood out right away was Bannockburn’s commitment to Montessori education and the feeling of order and calm in the classrooms. During our first visit, our son was hesitant to enter the Primary classroom. The teacher handled the situation with patience and kindness, taking time to help him feel comfortable rather than rushing him. Another student also stepped in to help, which gave us a good sense of the school culture. The combination of small class sizes, thoughtful teaching, and a strong sense of community ultimately made Bannockburn the right choice for our family.
Expectations vs. Reality
In many ways, Bannockburn aligned well with our expectations. There was a strong focus on student well-being, and the Montessori approach in the lower grades was well-established and thoughtfully delivered. Our children felt supported both academically and emotionally, which was important to us. Where the school differed somewhat from our expectations was in teacher continuity. Over the three-year classroom cycles, there was occasionally less stability in teaching staff than we had originally anticipated. In hindsight, it may not have been realistic on our part to expect the same teachers to remain in place for the full three years. It’s also worth noting that classrooms typically had more than one teacher, and when changes did occur, the school made an effort to keep at least one familiar teacher to provide consistency for the students. Overall, this was a relatively minor divergence from our expectations and was handled thoughtfully by the school.
Your Advice
If you’re looking for a small Montessori school with a strong sense of community, Bannockburn is a great option. The smaller size means fewer students are competing for opportunities, so children have more chances to participate, take on responsibility, and be known as individuals. It’s likely not the right fit if you’re looking for large facilities or a traditional school experience with competitive team sports. For families who value Montessori education, close relationships, and a tight-knit school community, it’s a strong choice.
