The big picture on Canada Nord Academy

We questioned the school administration

1. Who are you, as a school?

"Canada Nord Academy is an Ontario Ministry-inspected (BSID 882882) private high school striving to lead in online learning, delivering the OSSD through an innovative platform. In-person classes available in Markham. Courses are led by certified Ontario teachers offering 1-on-1 tutoring, replies within 24 hours, and 2-day grading. Students start anytime, from anywhere, and learn at their own pace — 100% complete their courses, and 100% of graduates receive offers from 2+ universities in Canada's top 10 or world's top 100."

  • Study Online or In-Person — Your Choice
  • Ontario Ministry-inspected (BSID 882882)
  • Advanced online platform with engaging video lessons and interactive coursework

  • 100% of graduates: offers from 2+ universities in Canada's top 10 or world's top 100

  • 1-on-1 tutoring, replies within 24 hours, assessment grading within 2 days
  • Credit recovery or Reach Ahead — enrol in individual courses, anytime
  • Flexible pace for student-athletes, performers, and other busy schedules
  • A strong fit for homeschool, microschool, and mature/adult students

2. What do you do differently and uniquely well?

1. Engaging Digital Learning Experience
Our online learning platform features teacher-led video lessons, interactive activities, quizzes, and multimedia resources — far beyond traditional text-based online courses.
2. Personalized Learning & Student Support
Every student receives a personalized learning plan based on their goals, whether recovering credits, getting ahead, meeting prerequisites, balancing sports or other commitments, or preparing for university. Courses can be completed in as little as 4 weeks or up to 1 year, with regular progress reviews and 1-on-1 online tutoring when needed.
3. Flexible Learning with Proven Results
Students can choose online or onsite learning and complete all assessments on our online platform. With every student's progress closely monitored and supported, 100% of our students complete their courses, and 100% of our graduates have received offers from two or more universities ranked in Canada's Top 10 or the world's Top 100.

3. What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

We chose to keep our physical campus small (100 day students) so we could invest in one strong online platform used by every student, on or off campus. The tradeoff: students wanting hundreds of peers and a big extracurricular menu won't find that here — but every in-person student gets full access to that same platform, including summer access to accelerate progress or catch up on credits.
For fully online learners, the tradeoff is real: geographic freedom and flexible scheduling mean less daily face-to-face contact with classmates than a traditional school offers. We've built regular check-ins, mentorship, and peer interaction into the platform to narrow that gap, but it's not the same as being in a hallway together every day.
We also chose quality over speed: every course is fully video-based and teacher-led, which takes far more time and investment to build than repurposed text-based content — but it means a richer learning experience in every course we offer.

4. What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

CNA was founded in 2021 to meet a growing need: Canadian private and public school students wanted flexible, high-quality online learning. We built our platform for that demand, not as a side project but as the core of the school. A foundational milestone came early, when CNA secured inspection and registration with the Ontario Ministry of Education (BSID 882882), the credential that lets every CNA graduate earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
As we partnered with more Canadian private schools, more local students experienced learning on our platform firsthand. Feedback from partner teachers and principals shaped how it evolved, refined continuously by real classroom needs. By the time CNA had served nearly 100 Canadian schools and close to 10,000 Canadian students, we had a proven track record at home.
With that strength established, CNA expanded internationally, partnering with 100+ overseas schools and institutions to make the OSSD a globally recognized credential.

5. What type of student is a good fit for your school?

CNA is an excellent fit for a wide range of learners:

1. Canadian students seeking flexibility: earn an extra credit, retake a course, lighten a future semester, or transfer credits from another curriculum. Enrol from CAD $299/credit.
2. Students with demanding schedules: athletes, performers, and others balancing health or other commitments, learning asynchronously, anytime.
3. In-person students wanting more attention: our small Markham campus offers close attention plus access to online resources.
4. Homeschool and microschool families: accredited, Ministry-recognized OSSD courses that fit your family's approach.
5. Mature and adult learners: finish your OSSD on your own schedule, returning after time away or meeting new prerequisites.
6. Video-based learners: video lessons and interactive coursework suit students who learn by watching, not reading.
7. International students: earn an OSSD with pathways to Canadian and global universities, with an option to transition to Markham.

6. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

We would encourage families to think carefully about CNA if:
The family is seeking a large, comprehensive high school with extensive on-site extracurriculars: our Markham campus is intentionally small. It offers personal attention and a close community — not a sprawling athletics and clubs ecosystem.
The family wants a full boarding-school experience: we are a day school and an online school. Students who want to live on campus, with dorm life and evening activities, should look elsewhere.
The family is looking for a traditional, single-cohort experience where a student joins in Grade 9 and moves through with the same classmates: our model is built around flexibility, and students arrive at different points for different reasons.

7. To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

Families choose CNA for seven key reasons:
1. Engaging Learning Platform: teacher-led video lessons and interactive resources keep students engaged.
2. Flexible Learning Options: study fully online, onsite, or switch between both without losing credits.
3. Competitive Pricing: online tuition starts at CAD $299 per credit; day-school costs more, but stays below comparable private-school tuition.
4. Support to Actually Finish: self-paced doesn't mean alone — every student gets 1-on-1 tutoring and teacher responses within 24 hours, so no one falls behind.
5. Faster Time to Diploma: courses can be completed in as little as 4 weeks, letting students accelerate instead of waiting a semester.
6. A Fit for Every Path: recovering credits, athletes and performers, homeschooling, mature learners, or transferring in — CNA adapts to the student.
7. Proven Results: 100% of graduates have received offers from 2+ universities ranked in Canada's Top 10 or the world's Top 100.

8. How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

CNA is increasingly recognised as a credible, modern OSSD provider that bridges the gap between online schools and traditional private education. Among education professionals, CNA is known as the school that gets the online-in-person balance right — a genuine physical presence in Markham paired with a purpose-built digital platform, not one at the expense of the other. Its reputation also rests on a partner network of nearly 100 Canadian schools and 100 international institutions, well regarded by local private-school students and international families alike.
For Canadian families, CNA is positioned as the flexible option — a school where a student can supplement their existing education, recover a missed credit, or accelerate their pathway without disrupting their life.
The phrase most associated with CNA is "We believe every student learns differently" — reflecting a school identity built around adaptability and student-centred design rather than a one-size-fits-all model.

9. What aspect of your school is underappreciated?

The depth of the resources inside our platform is something families often notice but underestimate. Beyond core video lessons, students have an extensive library of practice materials, enrichment content, and revision tools that go well past what a standard online course offers. This self-directed layer is where motivated students make their biggest gains, yet it rarely factors into a family's initial decision.
The other underappreciated aspect is the human side behind the screen. Families see that we offer support, but few realise how much: over 100 teachers providing 1-on-1 tutoring, replies within 24 hours, and graded assessments returned within 2 days. It is the reason 100% of our students complete their courses — self-paced never means being left to figure it out alone.

10. What might families find surprising about your school?

Two things regularly surprise families:
1. The video lessons are real teaching, not narrated slides. Our teachers record lessons that mirror how they teach in a live classroom — explaining concepts and working through examples. The difference is students can replay any part as often as they need, catching detail a live class never lets you rewind. Many families expect recorded content to feel thinner than a classroom; most find it goes deeper.
2. The campus isn't a one-time decision. Families assume choosing online or in-person locks them in. In practice, students move between the two whenever life requires it — athletes in competition season, performers on tour, students managing illness, and students with special needs all build schedules around their real lives, without disrupting their credits or changing schools.

11. What improvements or changes has your school made recently?

CNA has made several important improvements over the past two years:
1. Continuous curriculum enhancement: our courses are regularly reviewed and updated to align with Ontario curriculum standards, incorporate student and teacher feedback, and improve the quality of video lessons and assessments.
2. Platform development driven by partner schools: feedback from teachers and principals at our Canadian partner schools has directly shaped new platform features and improvements.
3. An expanding course catalogue: we continue to develop new OSSD courses, giving students more options each year.
4. Expanded 1-on-1 tutoring: we have grown our tutoring capacity so more students can get individual help alongside our long-standing standards of teacher replies within 24 hours and assessment grading within 2 days.

12. How will your school change in the next 5 years?

Over the next five years, CNA will focus on five key priorities:
1. Seamless learning pathways: strengthen the integration of our online and day school programmes, making it easier for students to move between them as their needs evolve.
2. A broader course catalogue: continue developing new OSSD courses so students have more options and flexible routes to graduation.
3. Technology innovation: keep enhancing our platform with more teacher-led video lessons, interactive and adaptive assessments, and expanded resources.
4. AI-enabled learning: integrate AI so our platform keeps its knowledge base current and gives students a more interactive experience — always alongside, never replacing, our teachers.
5. Thoughtful campus growth: grow our Markham campus while maintaining small class sizes and personalized support.
Throughout this growth, CNA will remain an Ontario-inspected school offering flexible learning with strong teacher support and access to online and on-campus study.

Gr. 10 (current) — My child’s experience has been quite positive overall. One thing I noticed is that the courses require a fair amount of independent work, so my child has had to take more responsibility to keep up with the lessons, complete assignments, and prepare for quizzes. At first, this took some adjustment because it is different from being in a regular classroom where a teacher is there in person. However, the course materials and resources have generally been clear enough for my child to work through the lessons independently. Some of the assignments and quizzes are challenging, which I think is helpful because my child has to actually understand the material rather than simply complete the work. It has also been encouraging to see the sense of accomplishment after finishing a difficult assignment or quiz. The teacher's feedback has been another useful part of the experience, as it gives my child an idea of what was done well and what could be improved. Overall, I think the experience has helped my child become more comfortable with independent learning while still having some guidance along the way.

Gr. 12 — My family and I moved to Toronto during Grade 12, and it was one of the biggest changes in my life. The decision was very sudden, and I wasn't able to complete some of my high school courses in Taiwan. I was missing several credits to apply to university, and I was really worried about falling behind. Thankfully, I found Canada Nord Academy, and it made the transition much easier than I expected. What I appreciated most about CNA was the flexibility. I was able to begin my classes while I was still in Taiwan and continue them seamlessly after I arrived in Toronto. Since everything was online and self-paced, I could study around my move and settle into my new life without feeling overwhelmed and lost.

Gr. 10 (current) — I’ve had a good experience with the teachers at the school. One thing I really appreciate is the detailed feedback from my teachers. When I submit an assignment, the teacher carefully reviews my work and points out what I did well and what could be improved. They also explain the progress of my assignments, which helps me understand what I still need to work on. Whenever I have questions about an assignment or course requirement, the teachers are usually very responsive and provide clear answers. I feel that this kind of feedback makes it easier for me to improve my work instead of simply receiving a grade. Overall, I’m satisfied with my learning experience, and I appreciate the support and guidance I receive from my teachers throughout the course.

My daughter has a very good time at Canada Nord Academy. What she likes most is that she can choose her own study time. She does a lot of sports training every week, so this school is great for her. She can do her homework in the evening or on weekends when she is not busy. The school platform is very easy to use, and she learned it quickly. She also likes that she can study at her own speed without feeling rushed. Sometimes she misses seeing her friends in a real class, but the online meetings are still very fun for her. Overall, this school lets her do her sports and study at the same time, and we are all very happy with it.

Gr. 11 (current) — Being a student at Canada Nord Academy’s online program has been an overwhelmingly positive experience, and I can honestly say I love it. The flexibility of learning from anywhere has been a game-changer for me—I can create a study environment that actually works for my focus and energy levels. Teachers don’t just lecture at you; they check in, ask questions, and remember your strengths and struggles. The coaching is excellent: feedback on assignments is detailed, encouraging, and always arrives faster than I expect. I also really value the built-in structure—live tutorials, clear weekly schedules, and consistent deadlines keep me on track without feeling micromanaged. What surprised me most (in the best way) is how connected I feel to my peers; between breakout rooms, virtual clubs, and casual Friday check-ins, it never feels isolating.

Gr. 10 (current),Gr. 10 (current) — The school has so many courses to choose from, and they provide strong support to my kids. They connect with us very often to make sure my kids are studying well and enjoying their studies here. They are very flexible, and they are pretty good—all of them! If I have another child, we will choose Nord as well. I had a very positive experience with Canada Nord Academy. The school provides a welcoming and supportive learning environment, and the staff are professional, friendly, and always willing to help students when needed. I especially appreciate how the teachers pay attention to each student's individual needs and academic progress. The communication between the school, students, and families is also very good. Questions are answered promptly, and the staff are patient when explaining school policies, courses, and academic planning. This makes the whole experience much easier and less stressful for both students and parents. Canada Nord Academy also offers students good academic support and guidance, helping them stay on track and prepare for their future education. Overall, I feel that the school genuinely cares about its students and their success. I would definitely recommend Canada Nord Academy to students and families looking for a supportive and professional learning environment in Canada.

Gr. 10 — Overall, our online learning experience at CNA has been very positive, and we are very happy with the progress our kids have made. One of the things we appreciate most is the quality of teaching. The teacher explains key concepts clearly and thoroughly, and takes the time to make sure the kids understand the material rather than simply going through the lessons. This has made it much easier for them to follow the course and stay motivated. We also really appreciate the support the teacher provides outside of class. Whenever our kids have questions or are unsure about something, the teacher responds quickly and gives clear, helpful explanations. Even though the classes are online, we never feel that our kids are left on their own. The communication has been very smooth, and we feel that the teacher genuinely cares about their learning and progress. Overall, CNA has provided a supportive, flexible, and effective online learning experience, and we would definitely recommend it to other families.

Gr. 12 — My overall experience at Canada Nord Academy was very positive. What stood out to me the most was the combination of academic support and flexibility. The teachers were very accessible and easy to communicate with. Whenever I had questions about the course material or didn’t understand something, I could contact my teacher directly and get help. For an online school, I found this especially valuable because it is not always easy to get direct support from teachers in an online learning environment. I particularly appreciated the flexibility of the course schedule during Grade 12. Managing Grade 12 courses while also preparing university applications and keeping up with application deadlines can be very demanding. Canada Nord Academy gave me a lot of flexibility in arranging my courses, which made it much easier to manage my time and balance my academic responsibilities with the university application process. The teachers were also understanding and willing to work with me when I needed to discuss my schedule or coursework. The online learning system was another thing I really liked. It was easy to use and well organized, with course materials, lessons, assignments, and other resources clearly presented. Assignments were marked in a timely manner, which allowed me to keep track of my progress and make improvements without waiting too long for feedback. The strong communication with teachers made the online experience much more personal and supportive. I feel that Canada Nord Academy prepared me well for my next step. In addition to completing my academic requirements, I learned how to manage my own time, stay organized, communicate when I needed help, and take greater responsibility for my own learning. I think these skills will be very useful as I move on to university. For prospective students, I would say that they can expect a flexible and well-organized online learning experience with strong academic support.

Gr. 11 (current) — I’ve had a very positive experience at CNA. The teachers are responsive, supportive, and always willing to answer questions or provide clarification when needed. They do a great job of making the lessons interactive, which makes learning more engaging and enjoyable. Rather than simply focusing on theory, the teachers often connect the lessons to real-life situations and experiences, making the material easier to understand and apply in everyday life. I also appreciate how they encourage students to participate in discussions and share their own thoughts and experiences. This creates a comfortable and welcoming learning environment where everyone feels included. Overall, I’m really happy with my experience at CNA and appreciate the effort the teachers put into making each lesson meaningful, practical, and enjoyable.

Gr. 11 to Gr. 12 — As a graduate of Canada Nord Academy, I had a very positive experience at the school. What stands out most to me is how supportive the teachers were and how much they cared about students’ academic progress. I especially appreciated the academic preparation I received. The school gave me a solid foundation for my further studies and helped me feel more confident moving on to the next stage of my education. There is nothing significant that I would change about my experience. Overall, I felt supported throughout my time at Canada Nord Academy and believe the school prepared me well for what came next. For prospective students, I would say they can expect a supportive learning environment, approachable teachers, and a strong focus on academics. If you are willing to put in the effort, the school can provide a good foundation for your future studies.

Gr. 12 — I attended a small Christian high school for three years. Since there were only a few international students, I received a lot of individual support and was able to adjust well to studying in Canada. In my final year, however, I needed an additional English credit to stay on track for graduation and meet my university admission requirements. One of my teachers recommended Canada Nord Academy, so I decided to complete the course online. I had taken an online course before, and my biggest concern was communication. In my previous experience, I sometimes waited a long time for assignments to be marked or even to schedule an exam, which was stressful when I had deadlines. My experience with CNA was much better. I could reach my teacher when I had questions; the feedback was helpful, and I always knew where I was in the course. The flexibility was important, but what stood out more was knowing that support was actually available when I needed it. I completed my English credit on time, graduated as planned, and was accepted into the university program I wanted.

Gr. 11 — My child has had a very positive experience at Canada Nord Academy. What he appreciates most is the flexibility of the online learning environment and, more importantly, the individual attention and support he receives from his teachers. He retook two Grade 11 courses, Functions and World History. For him, these courses were about much more than simply improving his grades. He was able to review important concepts, strengthen his foundational knowledge, and develop a better understanding of the material. As an international student, adjusting to the Canadian curriculum and academic expectations can sometimes be challenging. We really appreciated that his teachers were patient, responsible, and willing to adjust their explanations and teaching approaches to meet his individual needs. Over time, we saw our child become more confident and independent in his studies. He now feels much better prepared to return to the classroom for Grade 12.

Gr. 12 (current) — My experience with Canada Nord Academy’s online learning program has been very positive. One of the things I appreciate most is the flexibility it provides. I can organize my study time around my own schedule, while still having clear deadlines and expectations. This has helped me become more independent and responsible for keeping track of my work. The teachers have also been an important part of my experience. Even though classes are online, I feel that teachers are available when I need help. They explain concepts clearly, provide feedback on assignments, and are willing to answer questions when something is unclear. I appreciate that I can communicate with my teachers rather than feeling like I am learning completely on my own. Academically, the courses are challenging but manageable. I like that I have to take more responsibility for my learning and manage my time carefully. At times, it can be difficult to stay motivated when studying independently, but I have gradually become better at creating a routine and staying organized. I think these are skills that will be useful when I move on to university. Overall, I think the online program is a good option for students who are self-motivated and comfortable working independently. It offers flexibility without making you feel completely disconnected from your teachers. For me, the biggest benefit has been learning how to manage my own time while still having the support I need when I have questions or challenges.

Gr. 10 (current) — Nord Academy has truly impressed us in every aspect, from its beautiful and welcoming school environment to the exceptional support provided by its teachers and staff. The school creates a warm, positive, and inclusive atmosphere where students feel comfortable, valued, and motivated to learn. What stands out the most is how supportive and attentive the teachers are—they genuinely care about each student’s academic progress as well as their overall well-being. We really appreciate the school’s dedication to providing students with a safe, encouraging, and inspiring place to grow and succeed. Overall, Nord Academy is a wonderful school with a strong sense of community and outstanding support for students. I really enjoyed my school life here. I firmly believe that a warm welcome, friendly teachers, fun school activities, and opportunities to meet new classmates would be a wonderful surprise for new students.

Gr. 10 (current) — I’ve had a really good experience with this online school so far. There are a lot of courses to choose from, which is really helpful if you’re looking to complete specific high school credits or just need more flexibility with your schedule. I also really like how the courses are organized. The assignments are reasonable and actually help you understand the course material, rather than just giving you busywork. The teachers have been very responsive, and assignments are usually marked pretty quickly. I also find the grading to be fair and consistent, and the feedback is helpful when something needs to be improved. Overall, I would definitely recommend this school to students who want to complete some credits online. It’s flexible, the course selection is good, and you can still learn a lot while working at your own pace. It’s been a convenient option for me and has made completing courses online much easier.

Gr. 11 (current) — I’ve had a really good experience at CNA so far. What I like most is how supportive and responsive the teachers are. Whenever I have a question about school, I can usually get an answer pretty quickly. The teachers are also good at reminding us about important requirements and deadlines, which is helpful. I also like that the courses are challenging enough to make me think, but they don’t feel unnecessarily difficult. Assignments are usually marked pretty quickly, so I don’t have to wait a long time to find out how I did. The online platform is easy to use. I can easily find my lessons, assignments, and course materials. Overall, I’ve felt supported throughout my courses, and I’ve had a very positive experience.

Gr. 10 (current) — The students who do best here are the ones who are willing to engage consistently rather than cram for one exam. Because OSSD rewards steady effort—participation, projects, readings, quizzes—kids who were burned out by exam-only systems (like China’s Gaokao or even IB/A-Level pressure) thrive. My son is not a natural test-taker; within two terms, his confidence returned because he could show growth over time. My son’s English teacher pushed him on essay structure and critical thinking; his math teacher gave detailed feedback on every assignment. The faculty succeeds because they treat process-based assessment seriously: 70% coursework, 30% final, exactly as Ontario mandates. They don’t just “give marks”—they coach. The bilingual support staff (academic advisors and homeroom mentors) also kept us in the loop monthly, which mattered a lot as non-Canadian parents.

Alumnus, Haoxuan Sun (2026)

Gr. 11 to Gr. 12 — My experience at Canada Nord Academy was very positive, especially because I completed my studies through the eSchool learning format. The online format gave me flexibility in managing my own study schedule, while the school still provided clear academic structure and regular support. One thing I particularly appreciated was the way my previous studies and credits were assessed. The credit assessment was systematic and clear, and the course recommendations were not simply based on the credits I needed to complete. The school also considered my academic strengths and areas for improvement, as well as my future study plans, when advising me on course selection. Throughout my studies, I also had regular communication with the academic and administrative teams. When I had questions or encountered difficulties, I was able to get help in a timely manner. The teachers provided detailed feedback on my assignments and assessments, which helped me understand where I could improve. Overall, I felt that Canada Nord Academy provided a good balance between independent online learning and personalized academic support. I graduated in 2026 and will be continuing my studies at King’s College London, and I feel well prepared for this next stage of my education.

Gr. 12 — My experience at Canada Nord Academy was very positive, particularly because the OSSD pathway gave me the flexibility I needed as an art-focused student. My goal was to prepare for university while also spending significant time developing my art portfolio, so I wanted a high school pathway that would allow me to manage my academic studies and portfolio preparation more effectively. I chose to complete Grade 12 through Canada Nord Academy because the OSSD structure provided a clear academic pathway while giving me more flexibility in how I organized my time. This was especially valuable during the portfolio preparation period, when I needed to balance coursework with developing and refining my artwork. I also appreciated the academic guidance I received from the school. The course planning was clear, and the academic team helped me understand which courses I needed and how they related to my future university plans. Teachers also provided detailed feedback on my assignments, and I could get support when I had questions. Overall, I felt that Canada Nord Academy allowed me to maintain my academic progress without taking away too much time from my portfolio preparation. I graduated with a clearer pathway toward my goal of studying art and design at OCAD University.
