The Linden School is a truly unique institution:  the first all-girls school in Canada to practice feminist pedagogy from Kindergarten to Grade 12.  Linden offers girls a challenging and empowering curriculum that prepares them with 21st Century skills essential for success in their post-secondary education and beyond. The faculty are dedicated to instilling academic curiosity, self-confidence, social and emotional wellbeing in each girl that walks through their doors.

Linden teachers are curriculum leaders

Linden’s curriculum is frequently updated, as much as twice a year. This ensures it is as current and innovative as possible. Recently, Linden teachers came together to create a computer studies curriculum for the elementary grades, JK to Grade 8. They noticed there was no mandatory computer studies curriculum in Ontario for students before high school and that, girls especially, should be encouraged to develop strong technological skills to succeed in a rapidly-evolving digital world.

The curriculum has four goals: to encourage girls to see themselves as creators, rather than just consumers of digital technology; to emphasize programming skills; to encourage girls to consider careers in computer technology; and to enable girls to live healthy, safe and ethical online lives. “This curriculum speaks to the Linden School’s girl-centered philosophy where we want girls to be active creators of technology, not just consumers,” says Beth Alexander, Curriculum Leader and Grade 8 Teacher. “We teach programming from the get-go because one of the most important skills needed in the 21st century are computational thinking skills, and the best time to start developing these skills is as early as JK onwards.” This kind of innovative and forward thinking is what sets Linden apart. It gives girls an opportunity to explore their academic curiosities in a supportive environment.

Providing opportunity for girls to gain self-confidence

Linden places emphasis on confidence building to ensure that each girl graduates as an empowered and self-assured young woman. One proven approach to cultivating confidence is developing presentation skills from an early age. Each year, Linden holds multiple fairs in which students from all grades put together a project and present it to their peers, teachers, parents and even community members. ”We nurture essential leadership qualities among girls so that they become comfortable taking risks and advocating for themselves and their own ideas,” says Principal Janice Gladstone.

You will have an opportunity to see this confidence building in action. Linden’s upcoming Open House on November 3rd is also the date of the students’ Social Justice Data Fair. All those in attendance at the Open House are encouraged to attend the fair and observe the students present their projects. The fair will highlight Linden’s innovative curriculum and its cross-disciplinary nature, as students will bring together topics from many subjects to culminate in one project. Though the projects are centered on math and data, they are the perfect opportunity for each student to explore a social issue they are interested in by synthesizing many of their social science subjects, such as history, politics and geography. It’s a perfect opportunity for parents to see up close what their daughter can be a part of. 

All ages are now welcome

This year, Linden launched its JK and SK program with new teacher, Savannah Barker. In addition to teaching the Kindergarten classes, Savannah also shares a weekly blog on Linden’s website. Here, parents of students and those interested in learning more about the school can stay up to date with what the little ones are learning, and see how Linden’s approach to teaching is unlike any other.

Principal Gladstone says that many Linden families are public school supporters, “but sometimes they find their daughters’ needs are not being met. Even though their children are really bright, they’re not being challenged enough.” And they want to do better for their daughters. At Linden, girls thrive within a positive, supportive, and challenging environment made possible by exceptional educators. “Our smaller classes, and academically engaging teaching style provides a wonderfully collaborative and communicative learning experience. It also encourages girls to develop strong leadership and relationship-building skills,” says Principal Gladstone.
