(4.5) Overall Experience
My year at Neuchâtel Junior College was one of the most memorable and transformative experiences of my life. What stands out the most is the independence I gained while living in Switzerland. From managing my school workload to travelling across Europe on weekends with friends. The school offers a great balance of challenge and real-world experience that goes far beyond a traditional classroom. One of the things I liked best was the strong sense of community. The students, teachers, and staff are all incredibly supportive, and the friendships you build here are truly special. Neuchâtel Junior College prepared you not just academically, but personally. I left feeling more confident, mature and ready for university. For prospective students: expect to be challenged, to grow, and to have an unforgettable year. It’s a year you’ll never forget.
(4) School Leadership
The leadership and administration at Neuchâtel Junior College were approachable, supportive, and genuinely cared about student well-being. They struck a good balance between professionalism and building strong, respectful relationships with students. Their presence was felt in both academics and student life, and they played a key role in creating a safe, inclusive environment. Communication with both students and parents was clear and consistent. Overall, their leadership fostered a sense of community and confidence throughout the year, which helped us grow into our new independence.
(5) Teaching
The teaching at Neuchâtel Junior College is one of its greatest strengths. The teachers are incredibly passionate, knowledgeable, and dedicated to their students’ success. The dynamic between teachers and students is respectful but also personal; it’s not overly formal, which creates a comfortable learning environment. Teachers truly care about each student as an individual and take the time to provide thoughtful, constructive feedback. They encourage critical thinking, push you to do your best, and are always available for extra help or guidance. Many of us found ourselves more engaged in class than ever before. Their enthusiasm made the subject come alive. Overall, the teaching at Neuchâtel Junior College inspires curiosity, independence, and a love of learning that stays with you well beyond the year.
(4.5) Academics
Neuchâtel Junior College offers a rigorous and rewarding academic program that prepares students exceptionally well for post-secondary studies and beyond. The curriculum follows the Ontario Grade 12 program, but with smaller class sizes and a more engaging, university-style approach to learning. Academically, NJC's strengths lie in its passionate teachers, individualized support, and the way it fosters independent thinking. The atmosphere is academically serious, but not overly competitive. Students are motivated and hardworking, yet also supportive of each other. I felt consistently challenged but never overwhelmed, thanks to how approachable and responsive the teachers were. The program taught me how to manage my time, think critically, and take responsibility for my learning. If you’re looking for a school that encourages both academic excellence and personal growth, NJC offers the perfect balance.
(4) Extracurriculars
Neuchâtel Junior College offers a diverse range of extracurriculars that help students grow beyond the classroom. From arts and athletics to clubs like Model United Nations, there’s something for everyone. I participated in MUN and had the incredible opportunity to attend an MUN conference in Leiden, Netherlands, a highlight of my year. The atmosphere around extracurriculars is welcoming and inclusive, while some activities are more structured, most are accessible to all levels and interests. NJC encourages students to try new things, step outside their comfort zones, and become more well-rounded, confident individuals through these unique experiences.
(5) Students
The student body at Neuchâtel Junior College is small, close-knit, and full of spirit. With around 60 students, you get to know nearly everyone, creating a strong sense of community and support. Most students are curious, adventurous, and open-minded, drawn to NJC for its unique blend of academics and global experience. While everyone comes from different backgrounds, the majority are Canadian. What stood out most was the respect students had for independence, maturity, and kindness. There wasn’t a competitive or cliquey atmosphere; instead, students were collaborative, inclusive, and excited to build connections. People who stepped outside their comfort zones, took initiative, or supported others were highly respected. Overall, NJC students share a desire to grow, learn, and make the most of a once-in-a-lifetime experience together. It’s a community that feels more like a family by the end of the year.
(4.5) School Life
School life at Neuchâtel Junior College was exciting, fast-paced, and full of meaningful experiences. I truly loved going to school there; the combination of academic challenge, international travel, and living abroad made every day feel purposeful and unique. The small student body created a close-knit community where it was easy to make friends and feel supported. Living with a host family added a sense of home and comfort, which helped balance the independence of student life. Most students were passionate, engaged, and eager to make the most of the year. While there were moments of stress, especially during busy academic periods, the energy of the school and the support from teachers and peers helped a lot. To improve student life, NJC could offer more structured mental health resources or wellness programming.
(5) Community
What stands out most about the broader community at Neuchâtel Junior College is how deeply connected and supportive it feels, both during the year and afterwards. Even though it’s only a semester or a one-year program, the bonds you form with classmates, teachers, host families, and staff are lasting. Parents are definitely welcomed and encouraged to be involved, especially through events, communication from the school, and regular updates during the year. The alumni network is also incredibly strong. NJC grads share a unique experience that brings people together, even years later. I’ve stayed in touch with many classmates, and talk on the regular. The NJC experience creates a lifelong community, one that continues to grow and give back well beyond the year in Switzerland.
(5) School Location
What stands out most about Neuchâtel’s surrounding community is how safe, beautiful, and accessible it is. The town is charming and easy to navigate, with cafes, shops, and the lake all within walking distance. Students regularly ventured beyond the school, whether it was for lunch or a study break, which added to the sense of independence and immersion. The local community was welcoming, and living in town (not on a campus) made the experience feel more authentic and integrated.
(5) Admissions
My advice to anyone applying to NJC is to be open, honest, and excited about the opportunity. The admissions process was welcoming and supportive. I never felt judged or stressed, even when I was asking a million questions. The admissions officers genuinely want to get to know you and ensure NJC is the right fit. Be yourself, ask questions, and show your enthusiasm. From my experience, it felt more like a conversation than an interview, which made the process smooth and encouraging from start to finish.
(4.5) University placement and counselling
The university counselling program at NJC was helpful and personalized, especially considering the short timeframe of the school year. Counsellors were knowledgeable about both Canadian and international post-secondary systems and provided one-on-one support with everything from program selection to reviewing application essays. I felt supported through the process and appreciated the check-ins and resources offered. We had meetings once a month to ensure everything was going smoothly, whether academically or socially. That said, the process can feel fast-paced and a bit lonely, so I think group sessions, especially around timelines and competitive programs, would help reduce stress and give students a stronger head start. Overall, I felt well-prepared and confident applying to my top-choice universities, and the support I received played a big part in that success. NJC does a great job of guiding students while encouraging independence through the process.
