(5) Overall Experience
My time at Neuchâtel Junior College in Switzerland was truly unforgettable. Living and studying in such a beautiful town surrounded by the Alps and Lake Neuchâtel felt like something out of a dream. The school’s small, close-knit community made it easy to form lasting friendships, and the teachers encouraged us to think independently and explore the world beyond the classroom. Weekend trips across Switzerland and to nearby countries like France and Italy opened my eyes to new cultures and perspectives. I loved the mix of academic challenge, travel, and personal growth that NJC offered. Being able to live with a pension family while in Neuchâtel allowed me to bond with the locals in a way I never would have expected. My year there shaped me in ways I’ll always cherish and gave me self-advocacy skills as well as the confidence to take on future challenges.
Looking Back
Being able to bond with my pension family in such a unique way is something that will stick with me forever. It was an incredibly unique experience that I will always cherish.
Current Perspective
The relationships you create with the other students are so unique at this school because you are all going through such a unique experience together.
Your Advice
Make an effort in French! If you truly put in the work to speak with your pension family in French, you will become fluent by the end of the year, guaranteed.
(5) School Leadership
I found that the school’s leadership was generally very receptive to student feedback and was able to support students in a very receptive way. Because of how small the school is, you are able to build a one-on-one relationship with just about every member of the school leadership who is on campus. If you are going through a difficult time, they are very much able to help you out with it. I found that there was a mutual respect for school leadership and students alike.
(5) Teaching
The teaching at Neuchâtel Junior College was excellent, and I was very happy with the quality of instruction I received. The teachers were passionate and deeply knowledgeable about their subjects, and they communicated concepts clearly while providing constructive feedback. The student-teacher dynamic was respectful yet approachable; classes were formal enough to maintain high academic standards but relaxed enough that we felt comfortable asking questions and sharing ideas. Teachers encouraged critical thinking, fostered a love of learning, and consistently challenged us to do our best. One teacher in particular had a lasting impact on my personal and academic growth by inspiring me to think independently and express my ideas confidently. Overall, the faculty at NJC are dedicated mentors who genuinely care about supporting students’ growth both inside and outside the classroom.
(5) Academics
The academic program at Neuchâtel Junior College is rigorous, well-rounded, and designed to prepare students for success at university and beyond. The school emphasizes critical thinking, independent learning, and global awareness, with small class sizes that allow for personalized attention. The academic culture is collaborative rather than competitive, with students supporting one another while striving to achieve their personal best. Teachers provide guidance and constructive feedback, ensuring that each student is appropriately challenged while feeling supported. The curriculum encourages intellectual curiosity and develops strong skills in research, writing, and problem-solving. My experience at NJC prepared me well for my next steps by fostering independence, time management, and confidence in my abilities. For prospective families, NJC offers a stimulating, supportive academic environment that nurtures both personal and academic growth.
(5) Extracurriculars
The school provided many opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities not only with the school, but also with other Swiss programs outside of the school. I myself participated in a 10km race in Neuchâtel, the BCN tour. I also travelled to another school in Geneva to participate in an ultimate frisbee competition against Le Rosey. They provide many opportunities for extracurricular activities.
(5) Students
The student body at Neuchâtel Junior College is small, close-knit, and incredibly diverse, which gives the school a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere. Students come from many countries, backgrounds, and cultures, creating a rich environment for learning and personal growth. What stands out most is the strong sense of community: students are supportive, collegial, and respectful of one another, celebrating each other’s achievements while working hard individually. The “typical” NJC student is curious, independent, and motivated, but there is a wide range of personalities, talents, and interests. Qualities like openness, kindness, and dedication earned the most respect among peers. Shared values include respect, curiosity, and a willingness to engage with new ideas. Overall, the dynamic among students is friendly and collaborative, fostering lasting friendships and a sense of belonging.
(5) School Life
The overall quality of student life at Neuchâtel Junior College was excellent, and I truly loved my time there. The small, supportive community, combined with the beautiful setting in Switzerland, created a balanced and enriching environment. Academics were challenging but manageable, and the teachers’ dedication and guidance contributed greatly to a positive daily experience. Beyond the classroom, the range of extracurricular activities, weekend trips, and social events made student life engaging and fun. Most students were happy, motivated, and passionate about learning, though, like any rigorous program, occasional stress was natural. What stood out most was the sense of camaraderie and mutual support among students, which made even busy or challenging days enjoyable. For prospective families, NJC offers a vibrant, caring, and stimulating environment that fosters both personal growth and lifelong friendships.
(5) Community
(5) School Location
Lake Neuchâtel was right nearby, making it an incredible view every day when you arrived at school. The school’s location was so unique that I would arrive early every day, drink my coffee, and just admire the view of the lake. The Swiss Alps were in the background, and it was always incredible to be able to see them every day.
(5) Admissions
My advice to someone planning to apply for admission to Neuchâtel Junior College is to approach the process with curiosity and excitement. NJC is a unique opportunity to study abroad while earning high school credits, and it truly rewards students who are open-minded, independent, and eager to grow. From my own experience, the application process was smooth and welcoming. I remember feeling that the admissions team genuinely cared about getting to know me as a person, not just as a student on paper. They were supportive, kind, and always available to answer questions, which made the process feel personal rather than stressful. It felt less like an evaluation and more like a conversation about whether NJC would be the right fit—and it absolutely was.
(5) University placement and counselling
The university counselling program at Neuchâtel Junior College was an essential part of my journey toward being accepted at Concordia University in Montreal. The counsellors were incredibly supportive, offering personalized guidance that helped me identify the right program and present my application in the best possible way. They took the time to understand my interests and ambitions, providing helpful feedback on my essays and ensuring I met all requirements and deadlines. I always felt encouraged and well-prepared throughout the process. Their expertise and dedication made the entire experience smooth and positive, giving me the confidence to apply to competitive programs. I’m truly grateful for their guidance and support, which played a major role in my successful acceptance to the program that I wanted to get into.
