My child is in the Senior Learning Centre, and the change in their confidence has been remarkable. What they love most is moving at their own pace — pushing ahead in subjects where they excel, without waiting on the rest of the class, while taking the time they genuinely need elsewhere. They no longer feel rushed, bored, or left behind. They also love being truly known by their teachers, not just another face in a crowded classroom. The small, close-knit community has given them real friendships and a genuine sense of belonging they hadn't felt before. If there's one thing they find tricky, it's the independence self-paced learning requires — staying motivated and managing their own time took real adjustment at first. But that challenge has taught them something even more valuable: genuine responsibility and ownership over their own growth.

Why New Beginnings Christian Learning Academy?

Principal Iris Lam and the staff know every family by name, so concerns rarely fall through the cracks — problems get addressed quickly, thoughtfully, and with genuine care rather than generic policy responses. Discipline is handled fairly, treating each situation as unique to the child rather than applying one-size-fits-all consequences. Communication with parents is consistent and honest, whether through progress reports, casual conversations at pickup, or direct outreach when something needs attention. It genuinely feels like leadership that knows your child, not just their file.

Teaching at NBCLA has genuinely impressed us. Because classes are small, teachers aren't just delivering lessons — they're actively mentoring each child, noticing exactly where they're struggling or ready to move ahead. The teachers clearly care about their subjects and about the students themselves; it never feels like they're just going through the motions. Feedback is specific and constructive, not vague or generic, so we always know exactly how our child is progressing and what to work on next. Most importantly, our child gets both real challenge and real support — pushed forward in subjects where they excel, given patient extra help where they need it, never stuck in a one-size-fits-all pace that ignores their actual needs.

Academically, NBCLA's biggest strength is its individualized, mastery-based curriculum — our child doesn't move on until they've truly understood a concept, which has built real confidence and closed learning gaps that a traditional classroom might have let slide. The atmosphere feels achievement-oriented but not competitive; kids aren't compared to classmates, they're measured against their own growth, which takes real pressure off while still keeping standards high. If there's a weakness, it's that the program offers fewer elective and extracurricular options than a larger school might, simply due to size. That said, the core academics feel rigorous and thorough. We do feel confident this program is preparing our child well for what's next — not just with knowledge, but with self-discipline, independent thinking, and the ability to manage their own learning, skills that will serve them well beyond school.

Given the school's small size, we've been pleasantly surprised by the range of extracurriculars available. The seasonal athletics program keeps kids active year-round — soccer, cross country, ice hockey, basketball, badminton, and track & field — so every child gets a chance to find a sport they genuinely enjoy, not just the one or two options a smaller school might typically offer. For students who want a competitive outlet, ACSI events and the ACE Junior Convention give kids a chance to compete alongside other schools in academics, arts, and sports, which has been a great confidence booster. Beyond athletics, coding and robotics programs, music, drama, and creative arts round things out nicely. It's not the sprawling club list of a large school, but what's offered feels intentional and well-supported rather than spread thin — genuinely helping our child grow into a well-rounded person, not just a strong student.

Students genuinely seem to get along well, and disagreements are handled quickly and personally by staff who know each child's personality. It creates a atmosphere that feels less like an institution and more like a close, caring community.

Daily faith integration, seasonal sports, and a close-knit community all add up to a school life that feels personal rather than institutional. If there's room to improve, it would be expanding extracurricular variety further as the school grows — more clubs or elective options would round things out even more, though we understand that's a natural tradeoff of staying small. One thing prospective families should know: this school rewards kids who are ready to take ownership of their own learning — and that ownership is where real confidence starts to grow.

What stands out most is how genuinely welcoming the parent community feels — this doesn't feel like an institution parents drop their kids at and leave; it feels like a shared family. Because the school is small, parents get to know each other, and staff, on a personal level rather than through occasional newsletters or generic emails. Parents are welcomed into the life of the school, whether through informal conversations at pickup, school events, or simply feeling comfortable reaching out with questions or concerns directly to teachers and leadership. There's no sense of bureaucracy standing between families and staff. If there's room to grow, it would be more structured volunteer opportunities or parent committees as the school expands — though the current openness and accessibility already make involvement feel natural rather than obligatory.

Located in Newmarket, the school feels connected to its surrounding community rather than isolated. Students occasionally venture beyond school grounds for field trips, community service projects, and global engagement initiatives that are part of the school's broader mission. Day-to-day, though, the campus itself — with its close, family-like atmosphere — is where most of the magic happens, making the location feel less important than the community built within it.

Book a tour before anything else — seeing the small classrooms and self-paced model in action explains NBCLA far better than any brochure. The admissions process felt personal rather than stressful; staff genuinely wanted to understand our child's needs, not just fill a seat. Diagnostic testing helped clarify exactly where our child would be placed, which eased a lot of uncertainty upfront.
