American Hebrew Academy: A Unique Approach to Jewish Education

The American Hebrew Academy is a Jewish boarding school located in Greensboro, North Carolina. Founded in 2001, it is the only international Jewish college preparatory boarding school in the world.

The Academy provides the ideal boarding environment for students to prepare for college or university, explore their Jewish identity, and graduate with first-rate learning and leadership skills. Students are educated to develop a strength of character and commitment that can become lifelong resources for personal growth.

High-level Academics

The hallmark of the American Hebrew Academy is its dual-track curriculum. It offers rigorous courses in the humanities, arts, natural sciences, math, social sciences, technology, physical education, sports, and Hebrew. Through a dual enrollment program, students can also take a full range of Advanced Placement, early college, and college-level courses.

The Jewish studies program at the Academy is dynamic, stimulating, and enriching. Students take challenging courses on the history, traditions, texts, practices, and philosophy of the Jewish people. They also receive top-notch instruction on the full spectrum of Jewish thought, including Jewish history, Bible, Talmud, comparative Judaism, Mishnah, ritual and life skills, Hasidism, Jewish ethics, and Israel advocacy.

The Academy’s rigorous dual-track curriculum of general and Jewish studies equips students with an impressive academic acumen, potent critical reasoning skills, and a love of learning. Moreover, it promotes the development of a strong Jewish identity, and gives students a reservoir of Jewish knowledge to guide them in the years ahead.

Innovative Teaching Approach

The academic program at the American Hebrew Academy is modeled on the best private secular and Jewish educational institutions. The average student-to-faculty ratio at the Academy is 3 to 1, with an average class size of 10 students. Classes tend to emphasize active and hands-on learning, interactive discussion, and peer-to-peer learning over standard lecture-based teaching.

The Academy also offers experiential learning and active engagement through a wide range of unique programs. All students participate in a community service program on and off campus, Jewish life programming, an annual hosting of the special olympics, and sponsorship of Mitzvah Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day activities. Students also travel to Washington, D.C., Charleston, South Carolina, and spend 10 weeks in Israel in what can only be described as a life changing experience.

A Diverse Community

The American Hebrew Academy has a vibrant Jewish residential community that caters to students of all backgrounds, including secular, egalitarian, conservative, modern orthodox, and orthodox Jews. Unlike Jewish day schools, it provides its students with the experience of living and learning with a large group of Jewish teenagers from around the world, students from a broad range of backgrounds and socioeconomic classes.

As an international school, students at the Academy come from 31 states and 36 countries. This provides them with the unique opportunity to make friends and form relationships with peers from around the globe. In this environment, students truly feel part of a community that is unlike any they have experienced.
