Our daughter has truly enjoyed all of her teachers since arriving at SMUS. Like anywhere, some are better than others, but all are highly qualified and engaging. The curriculum is definitely challenging. There are plenty of AP classes to choose from. Because our daughter started in Grade 11, we allow her to handle any academic issues herself. However, on the rare occasion we have any questions, they do respond quickly. This is the first school our daughter has attended where the report cards include written comments along with grades. These comments obviously take a lot of time and thought. They are helpful in giving parents who cannot attend parent teacher conferences a better understanding of what is going on in the classroom.
We have four essential comments which make SMUS and its teaching staff outstanding: 1. They love their jobs and it always shows. There is no replacement for enthusiasm and wanting to teach. 2. They are always available to our son and always trying to help. They have his genuine best interest at heart. 3. They are personally connected and engaged with our son. His teaching is customized to his needs. Given they still have to follow curricula which is often sub-optimal for today's latest teaching techniques, we always appreciate knowing they do their best to be current. 4. As a parent, we feel like teachers are measured in their performance and offered help and training to improve. This level of professional approach and professional growth ensures SMUS is attracting top talent and helping them stay current in the latest teaching. We also feel like there is a mix of longevity with refresh in the teaching staff. This is a wonderful balance to a school, whereby the culture of excellence from long-standing teachers can be mixed with the enthusiasm and freshness of younger teachers.
Of course, as with any school some teachers are better than others but that’s simply to be expected. Regardless, all the teachers appear to be passionate and well-learned about their respective subjects and their jobs in general. The teachers at SMUS really care about each student and it shows in their personalized teaching and reporting. Furthermore, due to the small class sizes, teachers are able to pay adequate attention to each student and provide personalized relevant feedback. The classes are both challenging and fulfilling as students are given the opportunity to take classes that they’re passionate about and my children are certainly very happy about that and thus are able to be more engaged in the subject matter. When anything of academic concern arises with a student they always take the time to address it and brainstorm with the student how exactly they could do better in that specific class. They'll also send an email briefing the parents.
