    Intellectual
The goal is to cultivate "academically strong, creative and critical thinkers, capable of exercising rationality, apprehending truth, and making aesthetic distinctions."
    Balanced
Equal emphasis is placed on a balance of priorities: intellectual, emotional, social and physical cultivation.

    Curriculum pace

    N/A

    Student-paced
The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.

    Academic culture

    N/A

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    Montessori
Montessori programs aimed at preschool and Kindergarten- aged children allow young learners to choose which “tasks” or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles -- the essential features of these puzzles being they contain a “right answer” and allow for self-correction. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on learning being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with children developing a sense of self-sufficiency and confidence. Specially trained teachers act as guides, introducing children to progressively more difficult materials when appropriate. A Montessori classroom is typically very calm and orderly, with children working alone or, sometimes, in small groups.

Who are you, as a school?

    WESTMONT MONTESSORI SCHOOL

"Westmont inspires students by nurturing their interests, meeting their developmental needs, and accommodating their learning paces, all while adhering to Maria Montessori's principles. As our community's needs have shifted, the school has grown and adapted, always mindful of the changing world. We embrace classroom technology, complementing this digital engagement with the natural beauty of the 143 acres of forest, streams, and ocean frontage adjacent to our 8-acre campus."

What does school_name do differently or uniquely well?

What do you do differently and uniquely well?

    WESTMONT MONTESSORI SCHOOL

"At Westmont, experiential learning begins in pre-k and elementary with a focus on experiences in nature and self-directed use of hands-on tools. This expands in middle school with projects that integrate multiple subjects and require high-performance teamwork.
In our new High School program, projects are tackled through the design thinking model. We bring students to the world by creating learning experiences in progressive environments that offer knowledge from the real world, not a textbook."

What tradeoffs has school_name made to serve families in this way?

What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

    WESTMONT MONTESSORI SCHOOL

"Stepping into the unique world of Montessori education can be an enlightening journey, yet it may present initial uncertainties for families accustomed to the conventional approach. Our program intentionally shifts away from several elements characteristic of traditional education, which may raise questions about coverage and comprehensiveness. We understand it might be challenging to see how we encompass a full curriculum through a lens different from what you're used to. Furthermore, our distinctive method of assessment—moving beyond the realm of standardized tests and grades—requires a fresh perspective to fully grasp its effectiveness in capturing a child's progress and capabilities.

Montessori education is celebrated for its tailored approach, emphasizing personal responsibility and independence in learning. It is a common misconception that our educators spend their day directing each student's activities. Instead, we encourage a nurturing environment empowering children."

What key junctures in school_name's history have most shaped its present?

What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

    WESTMONT MONTESSORI SCHOOL

"Westmont Montessori School's dedication to the Montessori philosophy and experiential learning has been shaped by pivotal moments such as the move to our current campus , allowing us to integrate nature into our curriculum. Implementing British Columbia's new curriculum has reinforced our commitment to academic excellence and whole-child development. Our decision to extend programs through Grade 12 has allowed us to emphasize real-world, project-based learning that prepares students for a rapidly changing world, shaping the diverse and inclusive community we have today."

What type of student is a good fit for school_name?

What type of student is a good fit for your school?

    WESTMONT MONTESSORI SCHOOL

"Ideal Montessori students are curious, self-motivated learners who thrive in less structured environments. They benefit from a hands-on approach and can work independently as well as collaboratively. Adaptability to mixed-age classrooms and comfort with peer-learning are also key traits. Parents who are willing to embrace and extend Montessori principles at home will help in fostering a consistent learning experience. Children who are self-directed and take initiative in exploring their interests often excel in the Montessori setting, as do those who appreciate a non-competitive academic atmosphere that focuses on personal growth over grades."

Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing school_name?

Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

    WESTMONT MONTESSORI SCHOOL

"While the Montessori method offers a unique, enriching learning experience, it might not suit everyone. Families who prefer traditional academic structures with standardized tests and formal grading may find Montessori's student-led, observational assessment approach challenging. This method also relies on less structure and a flexible environment, which may be difficult for those accustomed to regimented learning. Additionally, Montessori classrooms feature mixed-age groups and focus on self-paced learning, potentially clashing with expectations for age-specific instruction and competitive academic settings. Ultimately, while Montessori has substantial benefits, families should choose an educational path that aligns with their values and expectations."

What aspect of school_name is underappreciated?

What aspect of your school is underappreciated?

    WESTMONT MONTESSORI SCHOOL

"What parents often overlook from Westmont's program is the development of "soft skills" that are not addressed in traditional education models. These skills are hard to quantify but easy to identify. They can be seen in the courtesy and respect a student displays in public settings, in the self-direction and self-discipline when a student completes homework without prompting, or when a high-schooler recognizes and willingly helps a pre-schooler on the playground."
