The big picture on Westmont Montessori School

We summarized the school ourselves

Offering a Montessori education from Preschool to Grade 12, Westmont Montessori School is located alongside 143 acres of parkland. Not surprisingly, kids at Westmont spend a lot of time outside, whether it’s hiking, bouldering, or mountain biking in the park, exploring rock pools on the adjoining beach, or gaining practical skills in the on-campus gardens. The school offers an array of inspiring and fun extracurriculars, including a Mandarin club, band, chess, STEM, mime, and table tennis. The school has bright, modern classrooms and outdoor learning shelters. While kids at Westmont tend to excel academically, teachers also focus on fostering independence and a passion for learning and developing new interests. This exciting and dynamic environment, when combined with dedicated and caring teachers, provides the ideal place for kids to thrive.

We questioned the school administration

1. Who are you, as a school?

"Westmont inspires students by nurturing their interests, meeting their developmental needs, and accommodating their learning paces, all while adhering to Maria Montessori's principles. As our community's needs have shifted, the school has grown and adapted, always mindful of the changing world. We embrace classroom technology, complementing this digital engagement with the natural beauty of the 143 acres of forest, streams, and ocean frontage adjacent to our 8-acre campus."

  • Why manufacture learning, when the world is full of experiences to learn from?
  • Individuality - Everyone has their own path, their own interests, and their own way of learning.
  • Independence - We have the ability to run our organization in service of our students and community.
  • Innovation - We're open to change & believe that understanding technological progress is imperative.
  • Interdisciplinary - Life doesn’t have labels and neither should education.
  • Inclusion - We believe that everyone & everything has a role to play in our world as we know it.

2. What do you do differently and uniquely well?

At Westmont, experiential learning begins in pre-k and elementary with a focus on experiences in nature and self-directed use of hands-on tools. This expands in middle school with projects that integrate multiple subjects and require high-performance teamwork.
In our new High School program, projects are tackled through the design thinking model. We bring students to the world by creating learning experiences in progressive environments that offer knowledge from the real world, not a textbook.

3. What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

Stepping into the unique world of Montessori education can be an enlightening journey, yet it may present initial uncertainties for families accustomed to the conventional approach. Our program intentionally shifts away from several elements characteristic of traditional education, which may raise questions about coverage and comprehensiveness. We understand it might be challenging to see how we encompass a full curriculum through a lens different from what you're used to. Furthermore, our distinctive method of assessment—moving beyond the realm of standardized tests and grades—requires a fresh perspective to fully grasp its effectiveness in capturing a child's progress and capabilities.

Montessori education is celebrated for its tailored approach, emphasizing personal responsibility and independence in learning. It is a common misconception that our educators spend their day directing each student's activities. Instead, we encourage a nurturing environment empowering children.

4. What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

Westmont Montessori School's dedication to the Montessori philosophy and experiential learning has been shaped by pivotal moments such as the move to our current campus , allowing us to integrate nature into our curriculum. Implementing British Columbia's new curriculum has reinforced our commitment to academic excellence and whole-child development. Our decision to extend programs through Grade 12 has allowed us to emphasize real-world, project-based learning that prepares students for a rapidly changing world, shaping the diverse and inclusive community we have today.

5. What type of student is a good fit for your school?

Ideal Montessori students are curious, self-motivated learners who thrive in less structured environments. They benefit from a hands-on approach and can work independently as well as collaboratively. Adaptability to mixed-age classrooms and comfort with peer-learning are also key traits. Parents who are willing to embrace and extend Montessori principles at home will help in fostering a consistent learning experience. Children who are self-directed and take initiative in exploring their interests often excel in the Montessori setting, as do those who appreciate a non-competitive academic atmosphere that focuses on personal growth over grades.

6. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

While the Montessori method offers a unique, enriching learning experience, it might not suit everyone. Families who prefer traditional academic structures with standardized tests and formal grading may find Montessori's student-led, observational assessment approach challenging. This method also relies on less structure and a flexible environment, which may be difficult for those accustomed to regimented learning. Additionally, Montessori classrooms feature mixed-age groups and focus on self-paced learning, potentially clashing with expectations for age-specific instruction and competitive academic settings. Ultimately, while Montessori has substantial benefits, families should choose an educational path that aligns with their values and expectations.

7. To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

- Tailored education
- Academic excellence
- Whole child development
- Stunning nature campus
- Best of BC’s new curriculum. “Best implementation of BC’s new curriculum I’ve seen” – Ministry of Education Inspector
- Caring and supportive community. It makes all the difference in a young person’s development.
- Passion for learning. Our method ignites a fire for deep, lifelong learning. How? Choice within boundaries.
- Mentorship for life. From K-12 our students learn how to lead and be led.

8. How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

We are well-known for a caring and supportive environment. Our program allows students at all levels to achieve high levels of academic and personal growth while pursuing their interests.

9. What aspect of your school is underappreciated?

What parents often overlook from Westmont's program is the development of "soft skills" that are not addressed in traditional education models. These skills are hard to quantify but easy to identify. They can be seen in the courtesy and respect a student displays in public settings, in the self-direction and self-discipline when a student completes homework without prompting, or when a high-schooler recognizes and willingly helps a pre-schooler on the playground.

10. What might families find surprising about your school?

We choose to be an independent organization so we can remain nimble and able to adopt and adapt new programs as our community needs them. Our autonomy gives us the freedom to partner with innovators and experts as we identify new areas of interest for our students and new opportunities to learn from some of the most interesting people and organizations in the world.

11. What improvements or changes has your school made recently?

We have invested significantly in creating a maker space to allow middle and high school students to advance their technological skills with cutting edge equipment. This investment has a marked impact on the students' ability to explore concepts in their academics and express their learning in remarkable ways.

12. How will your school change in the next 5 years?

Our school will see a significant increase in our middle and high school student populations along with a significant investment in capital infrastructure to support their academic pursuits.

Gr. 4 (current),Preschool (current),SK (current),Gr. 1 (current) — As a parent with several children at Westmont Montessori, I can confidently say how proud I am to be sending my children here. The teachers and staff are beyond caring and extremely experienced and well-versed in the Montessori system. The incorporation of nature, with the outstanding forest and beach behind the school, is second to none. I have found the school to be extremely welcoming and open in its communication. My children have blossomed in the last two years. This is a school that is aiming to teach children how to apply in real life what they are learning—not simply to memorize and sit at a desk, but to get out in the real world, build firm relationships, contribute to society, and interact with the world as a whole. After searching for many years to find the right school for all four of my children to attend, I am proud to say that we have found a wonderful place for them! I would encourage any parent in the Victoria area to send their children to Westmont.

K (current),Gr. 2 (current) — Westmont provides a supportive learning environment for my children with plenty of opportunities to spend time in nature. The teaching style supports individuality in student needs while still achieving the requirements of formal education. As a parent I appreciate the transparency in administration as well as opportunities to be involved at various levels. The size of the school helps us feel like a true member of the community and not just another student. I feel comfortable bringing up discussions of concern to teachers and admin alike when times have arisen. The values of Westmont put the children first. The facilities are wonderful and although we lack a gymnasium I do feel the less formal outdoor space serves the kids well. I do think my kids worry about the decrease in student body in middle school and beyond and as a parent I worry about not having enough different individuals for my child to interact with.

We have 2 children at Westmont Montessori, 6th and 7th grade, ages 11 and 13, respectfully. The children absolutely love this school. We just relocated from the States (Orlando, FL). This was a brand new school for the girls and we can all say that Westmont has welcomed the girls in a very thoughtful way and they have made great friends with great kids quite quickly. This is what they appreciate the most: being at a school with like-minded kids who are open-minded and love learning, as well as being at a school where they get to express themselves authentically and be celebrated and encouraged for their unique gifts, talents, interests and personalities. The teachers have been phenomenal and do a great job listening to our kids' needs and meeting them where they're at while challenging them at the same time. We have been involved with the PAC and the school Board and feel inspired to be a part of shaping the future of Westmont. Their high school 2.0 vision and curriculum are game changers.

At Westmont, my daughters have felt safe, nurtured, and valued as individuals. They appreciate the freedom to explore what they are most interested in and to express themselves and their interests in so many unique ways. They value the incredible commitment of the teachers and love every one of them. They are excited to go to school and often want to stay longer. They love how they are encouraged when they develop an interest in a topic and are given the resources and attention to pursue it as far as they want. At the same time, they find the programs challenge them to think hard, communicate better, and interact with their peers in teamwork that I consider to be a good model for their future careers.

My children love this school. They adore their teachers and have a sense of pride and ownership of their educational experience. My eldest loves that he gets to choose which work he completes in a day, mostly leaning towards math. He also finds it natural to work with another person to solve problems and likes to choose someone with similar interests to work with. My daughter loves to challenge herself and try new things. She likes that she can ask for more complex work when she wants and her teachers are happy to help her change herself. Both kids understand the importance of kindness and community and when the children get together in the community, their behaviour with other kids really shows that kindness is taught at such a young age that it comes naturally to them, with all children. I love that they are smarter than me in lots of areas already and are continually teaching me things.

My daughter is always thrilled to attend Westmont - she literally runs to school every single day! She loves the inclusive, caring and holistic environment: an environment that fosters peer learning and peer support like no other. She strives in an environment where she gets to make so many decisions independently leading to her playing a major role in how her education plays out. The Montessori philosophy fosters independence and free will allowing my daughter to reach her fullest potential. I knew the moment I got pregnant we would attend Westmont Montessori school. The lessons in community (big and small), generosity, inclusiveness, mindfulness, care for each other, the self, the planet, and so much more are incredibly meaningful to our family. Thank you so much to the entire Westmont Community for helping us raise a child who will flourish in this world.
