    Curriculum pace

    Standard-enriched
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

    Academic culture

    Rigorous
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

    Our Take

    Our Take

    LONDON INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

London International Academy was founded in 2002 with an explicit attention to preparing students for success at university in North America. In the years since the student population has grown considerably, as has the school’s mandate. Today annual enrollment is 350 students who arrive from around the world. The school has developed a full palette of services with the international student in mind, including language instruction, university guidance, cultural exchange programs and a challenging curriculum. The ideal student is one with an eye to succeeding in post-secondary studies in Canada.

    BROOKES WESTSHORE

Learning is collaborative, project based, and rigorous. The campus reaches out the world, including virtual classrooms that link up with those at sister schools in Cambridge UK, Seoul Korea, and Silicon Valley California. The school’s vision is as broad as its reach, intending to produce leaders who will not only engage with the world, but seek a role in shaping it. Instruction is supportive and attentive, challenging and expansive.

    BROOKES WESTSHORE

    Message

The Academy prides itself in providing students with a challenging and excellent high school educational program almost invariably leading to admission to one of the leading universities in Canada. The school also provides a well rounded education with much organized social, recreational and educational activity at the school and class level. As testimony to the quality of our students and our educational program students from the Academy have achieved and continue to achieve outstanding results in mathematics, computing and physics contest organized by the Canadian Mathematics Society and the University of Waterloo.

London International Academy has a first rate academic program, a fully qualified and very well educated teaching staff, bright and comfortable classrooms, continuous student counseling and advising, and a very effective and enthusiastic student support staff. All of these factors contribute to student enjoyment, motivation and adaption to North American culture which obviously includes the rapid acquisition of English. This is confirmed and illustrated by the tremendous disproportionate success of international students enrolled in the school in obtaining university and college places.

London, Ontario is a healthy, safe and pleasant small city which facilitates student involvement in the local community. Students who enroll in the Academy will be embarking on a pleasant but rigorous and stimulating educational journey culminating in acceptance by an excellent university.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Paul Debenham
    Principal

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

      LONDON INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.

      BROOKES WESTSHORE

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.

We currently offer the IB Diploma Programme for grades 11 and 12, and the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) for grades 6 through 10. Our school embraces the newly revised BC Ministry curriculum and is taught through the MYP and IB framework. Our approach is to engage students in big ideas, asking essential questions to make learning meaningful and relevant. For 2020 we will be pioneering a grade 4 and 5 class as we build towards offering the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP).

The process approach to teaching beginner writing aims to get students writing “real things” as much as possible and as soon as possible. The goal is to create the right environmental conditions to encourage a love of writing and a motivation to write well. With children invested in the writing process -- through assignments children find meaningful -- students are then given feedback on how they can improve.

In traditional literature programs students focus on decoding the mechanics of texts: plot, characterization, and themes. These texts tend to include a balance of contemporary and “classic” literature. When studying a past work, students investigate its historical context -- but only insofar as this adds understanding to the work itself. Past works are therefore studied “on their own terms”, and not merely as historical artifacts to be deconstructed: traditional literature programs are firmly rooted in the humanities, and carry the belief that great literature can reveal fundamental and universal truths about the human condition. These programs emphasize class discussions and critical essay writing, and aim to develop in students critical thinking, communication skills, and a cultivated taste and ethos.

        BROOKES WESTSHORE

These literature programs draw in equal measure from “Traditional” and “Social Justice” programs.

We teach literature as a progression of analysis skill building, and learning to express ideas through presentations and writing through the grades. Students are exposed to diverse cultural views through different types of texts and being able to understand the different means through which a writer can convey their ideas and purpose to an audience. Students are encouraged to think independently and collaborate with others in the learning process. In the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, students will study Language and Literature course in their mother language. Many of our international students in this programme love to be able to have this opportunity.

These programs represent an equal balance between the perennialist and pragmatic approach to teaching the humanities and social sciences.

        BROOKES WESTSHORE

Perennialism in the humanities and social sciences emphasizes the idea of education being a kind of “conversation” between generations, and so frequently turns to “Great Works” and “Big Ideas” for teaching-content. Perennialist programs approach past works on their own terms; as if they might actually help students understand “today” better. Past works are not viewed as mere historical artifacts, but as gateways to a deeper understanding of the human condition. History (and, by extension, the humanities in general) therefore plays a large role in perennialist curriculums, though social sciences like economics, psychology, and sociology can still be taught. There is a strong Liberal Arts bent to perennialist programs. The key goals are to develop critical thinking, a strong foundation of core knowledge (or “cultural literacy”), and persuasion skills through informed debate and extensive practice in essay writing.

Creative arts programs are studio-driven. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.

Visual Arts encourage students to challenge their own creative and cultural expectations and boundaries. Students develop analytical skills in problem-solving and divergent thinking, while working towards technical proficiency and confidence as art-makers. By exploring and comparing visual arts from different perspectives and in different contexts, students are expected to engage in, experiment with and reflect upon a wide range of contemporary art practices and media. Courses are designed for students who wish to study the arts at a post High School level, as well as for those who are seeking lifelong enrichment. We celebrate the visual arts in the way we create images and objects, and in the way we appreciate, enjoy, respect and respond to the practices of art-making by others from around the world. Theories and practices are dynamic and connect many areas of knowledge and human experience through individual and collaborative exploration, creative production and thoughtful interpretation.

Effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy through the curriculum. However, this is not a dominant focus.

        BROOKES WESTSHORE

Computers are used in the classroom from time to time, but integrating technology into everything students do is not a dominant focus. Digital literacy is understood to be a legitimate skill in the 21st century, but not one that should distract from teaching the subject at hand, or more fundamental skills and literacies. The idea is today’s students, being “digital natives”, are likely exposed to computers and new media enough outside the classroom: the role of the school, rather, should be to develop competencies that may otherwise get missed.

      Our Take

      Our Take

      LONDON INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY
