    N/A

    Balanced
Equal emphasis is placed on a balance of priorities: intellectual, emotional, social and physical cultivation.
    Intellectual
The goal is to cultivate "academically strong, creative and critical thinkers, capable of exercising rationality, apprehending truth, and making aesthetic distinctions."

    Curriculum pace

    N/A

    Standard-enriched
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

    Academic culture

    N/A

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    Reggio Emilia
Reggio Emilia programs aim to develop curiosity and problem-solving skills through the liberal use of “projects”, (as opposed to “activities” or “lessons”). Teachers design projects for children around their demonstrated interests. Projects can be geared to an individual student, a small group of students, or the class as a whole. Projects can last from a few days to the whole year. Art is strongly emphasized and is typically incorporated into every project. Teachers actively participate in projects alongside students, rather than sitting back and observing. A high degree of parent involvement is also encouraged, particularly when forming curriculums and project plans (which happens throughout the academic year).

What does school_name do differently or uniquely well?

What do you do differently and uniquely well?

    J. ADDISON SCHOOL

"Inquiry-based learning is at the heart of our teaching approach. Students are expected to review materials independently, and class time is used for discussion, experimentation, and problem-solving. Teachers closely monitor each student’s progress, offering extra challenges to those who want to go further and additional support to those who need it. With small class sizes, teachers truly understand each learner’s pace, strengths, and interests, ensuring no one is left behind. In our Early Learning & Elementary programs, this approach comes to life through projects that invite students to test ideas and learn by doing. Students collaborate to design spaghetti structures, experiment with movement and mechanics through hydraulic models, and express French and language understanding through art, drama, and hands-on challenges. By combining structured learning with exploration, teachers create classrooms where curiosity leads learning and every student can engage."

What tradeoffs has school_name made to serve families in this way?

What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

    J. ADDISON SCHOOL

"Our approach is based on the timeless values of security and discipline. While some students may initially find challenging to adapt to the structure we provide, this process is key to building resilience and character. In today's fast-paced world, we believe in maintaining a supportive, disciplined environment that helps students grow, bounce back from failure and graduate successfully as accountable and responsible individuals. The balance between traditional and innovative methods ensures that every student is not only prepared for academics success but also equipped with the life skills and values needed to thrive as global citizens. The journey may start with challenges, but the long-term rewards of personal growth, confidence, and a strong moral foundation are invaluable."

What key junctures in school_name's history have most shaped its present?

What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

    J. ADDISON SCHOOL

"J. Addison School was founded in 2002 to provide high-quality education for international students, inspired by a vision to raise the standards of private schooling. By 2004, our enrollment had grown to over 100 full-time students, prompting a move to larger facilities in Scarborough. Shortly after, we opened our boys’ and girls’ residences to accommodate our growing community.

In February 2005, to meet increasing demand, we acquired 3 acres of land in Markham to construct a state-of-the-art 60,000-square-foot campus designed with students' needs and security in mind. The new campus opened in September 2007.

On our 15th anniversary, we began a partnership with York University, offering enhanced opportunities for our students. This commitment continued with a collaboration with Wilfrid Laurier University in 2023, Metropolitan Toronto University in 2024, and Trent University in 2025, broadening pathways for our graduates and reinforcing our dedication to excellence in education."

Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

    J. ADDISON SCHOOL

"J. Addison School may not be the ideal fit for every family, as our approach and environment cater to specific educational values and goals. Our emphasis on structure and balanced approach may not fit families looking for a highly specialized curriculum. While we celebrate diversity and global perspectives, with 50% international students, some families might seek a more homogeneous school environment."

"Building character, instilling kindness, and respect are all at the forefront of building the foundation to a lifelong positive journey to learning. In the next 5 years, we’ll have to embrace the leading technological forces that have reshaped how students learn. While we firmly believe that AI will never replace the human teaching experience, we also have to incorporate the advantages available to strengthen and harness teaching strategies, processes, concepts, and methodologies to encompass a mass breadth of learning styles that our children embody. We will support the next generation of leaders as they grow and learn to shape the future using technology and innovation with purpose and integrity."
