In 1977, facing language restrictions from the Quebec government, Stanstead College opted to decline all government funding in order to become truly independent, a move that would allow it to continue to accept students from around the world. In 1979, in a boost to further increase enrolment, Stanstead College reverted to its original co-ed status after 20 years as a boys-only school.
