"The YMCA Academy is an alternative middle and high school designed for neurodiverse learners. With small class sizes, individualized programming, and integrated life skills support, students develop the confidence, self-advocacy, and practical skills needed to succeed in school, work, and life. Located in the Central YMCA in downtown Toronto, the Academy provides a supportive, experiential learning environment that helps students thrive on their own path."
"The Academy offers the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum, balancing structure with flexibility to meet the diverse needs of neurodiverse learners. Our school serves neurodiverse students, including those with learning disabilities, ADHD, and mild autism, who thrive with personalized instruction and support. We value each student’s unique strengths and learning styles and foster an inclusive environment, which we maintain through nurturing relationships and a supportive community. With small classes ( no more than 11 in the high school and 8 in the middle school), experiential learning, and social-emotional resources, we cultivate academic and personal growth for each student. Students benefit from experiential learning, technology integration, and a variety of co-curricular activities to develop holistically."
"The YMCAGTA is a charity that ignites the potential in people, helping them grow, lead, and give back to communities.” Their values are the following:
Inclusiveness. We create welcoming places and programs where everyone feels they belong.
Integrity. We are truthful, trustworthy, and take responsibility for our choices, actions, and commitments.
Kindness. We are caring and compassionate.
Optimism. We believe in the strengths and potential in people and communities.
Respect. We treat every person with dignity.
Well-being. We are dedicated to people’s physical, social, and mental health.
The YMCA Academy reinforces these values and also is committed to help each student be a positive member of our school community and allow for the continued development of positive self-worth and self-discipline."

"Students and parents ofter state that they have found their second "home". Students who are seeking to find a community where everyone is accepted and supported will thrive in our caring and compassionate environment."
"While we are committed to supporting each student to the best of our ability, we recognize that we cannot be the right fit for every learner. Our program is designed primarily for students with one or more of the following exceptionalities: Autism Spectrum Disorder (Level 1), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Learning Disabilities. Students whose needs fall significantly outside of this profile, such as those with an Intellectual Disability or Autism Spectrum Disorder (Level 3), may require a level or type of support that we are not equipped to provide. We also offer distinct academic pathways, and at times there may be a mismatch between a family’s post-secondary goals and what we believe is realistically attainable for a student. For example, if a family’s expectation is a direct pathway to university but we feel that outcome would not be achievable or in the student’s best interest, we would have an honest conversation and may advise exploring other options."
"Families choose YMCA Academy because we specialize in supporting neurodiverse learners with tailored education plans that help each student thrive. Our small class sizes, individual attention, and inclusive environment ensure students feel understood and valued. Unlike traditional schools, we offer experiential learning, hands-on opportunities, and social-emotional support that build real-world skills and confidence. Parents see their children's growth and appreciate our dedicated approach."
"Our caring and hard working teaching staff who form strong and supportive relationships with their students."
"One often underappreciated aspect of YMCA Academy is the deep, meaningful relationships that develop between students, staff, and peers. Families may not immediately realize how essential these bonds are to their child’s success and happiness. The caring, supportive environment fosters personal growth, resilience, and a true sense of belonging. These relationships are the foundation for academic progress and social-emotional development, creating a school experience students genuinely love."
"Families are often surprised by how quickly their children start loving school at YMCA Academy. Many students who previously dreaded school now enjoy coming daily, and they form close friendships in our supportive, inclusive environment. What families may not expect is the sense of belonging their children feel, which boosts confidence and engagement. Our hands-on, personalized approach helps students academically and fosters social connections and emotional growth."
"We have added an additional supports for our students which include additional Student Life Counsellors (2), Educational Assistants (2) and a newly created position of Learning Support Specialist who provides support for both students and staff. We are also offering a new SEL course known as "Life Skills" (IDC3O)."
"We will continue to seek opportunities for experiential learning for our students by participating in the YMCA Youth Exchange Canada (YEC) program. YEC supports educators and youth workers in creating meaningful, hands-on learning experiences for youth ages 12 to 17. Through paired exchanges, groups travel to another Canadian community and welcome a “twin” group in return. Youth learn together through shared activities, reflection, and community engagement."
