    LUTHER COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

    Luther College High School was established in 1913 as a boys’ boarding school, and with just 32 students that inaugural year. Girls were first admitted in 1920, and over the years there have been other changes, too. Today the population is predominantly day students, though there is still a sizable boarding program. The High School campus completed a $18.3 million dollar expansion in 2014 which includes a new performance stage, three new classrooms (two of which are dedicated to fine arts), a gymnasium and student fitness training centre, a student commons, and upgrades to existing structures. The school also has fully renovated science laboratories and extensively upgraded on-campus dormitories. The motto “Quality Education in a Christian context” reflects an emphasis on the whole person—intellectually, emotionally, spiritually and physically—within a progressive Christian context. The values that provide a foundation for the program are rightly a draw. The ideal student is one who can thrive in an active, diverse school community, and who is intending to proceed to post-secondary studies after graduation.

     

    ASHBURY COLLEGE

    Ashbury celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2016, making it one of the oldest schools in the nation. Of that class, it’s also one of the larger schools, with an annual enrollment in the 800 range. There are benefits to size, and Ashbury displays them, with a wealth of extra-curricular activities and co-curricular programs. The school was founded by a graduate of Oxford, Canon George Penrose Woollcombe, who cast the school within the academic tradition that Oxford was, and is, an example of. That said, times change, and certainly Ashbury did as well. The school was an early adopter of global education, most obviously with the addition of the IB program in 1976. Girls were enrolled in 1982, and while the boys still marginally outnumber the girls, the school continues to move toward gender parity. The list of alumni is impressive, including a prime minister, John Turner, and a Nobel laureate, Douglass North. The ideal student is one looking for a challenge, and who can function well in very active curricular and extracurricular environments.

    Dr. Mark Anderson is the Head of School/Principal.

    Norman became Ashbury’s tenth Head of School at the beginning of January, 2014. He brings with him 20 years of education experience, including seven as Principal of Neuchâtel Junior College in Switzerland and 11 at Stanstead College in Québec, where he served five years as Assistant Headmaster. Most recently, he was Headmaster at St. John’s-Kilmarnock School, an IB World School of 400 students (JK-12) serving the Waterloo and Guelph regions of Ontario.

    Norman’s career in social studies, second language and international education includes the completion of the CAIS Diploma in Independent School Leadership and his participation in visiting committees with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS). He has served as vice-chair of the Swiss Group of International Schools (SGIS) for five years including organizer of the SGIS annual educator’s conference for over 40 international schools. He currently sits on the board of the Conference of Independent Schools (CIS) in Ontario, and chairs the CIS Governance Committee. He has presented at the International Baccalaureate Annual Conferences, international schools in China and is enthusiastic in developing a range of experiential and learning opportunities for students.

      The academic program emphasizes traditional core subjects while incorporating innovative approaches and modern programs. Luther College High School exceeds the curriculum established by the Government of Saskatchewan. In addition to the required courses, Luther students must take more math in Grade 9, a second English class in Grade 11 and a course in Christian Ethics for each year of enrollment. The Luther school year is made up of two semesters. Students are allowed to take a maximum of six courses per semester. At every grade level, there are certain compulsory courses students must pass. Students may also choose optional courses to fulfill the requirements for their Saskatchewan Grade 12 diploma. A dedicated teaching staff challenges students to excel and discover their gifts. Our well educated faculty only teaches in their major or minor disciplines, and most possess qualifications that far exceed standard requirements.

    • Luther Invitational Tournament (LIT) LIT 68 is February 6 - 8, 2020 The Luther Invitational Tournament (LIT) is the longest running high school tournament in Canada. It began in 1953 on the initiative of John Chomay, the senior boys basketball coach and athletic director. LIT is a student-run tournament, lasting three days in February. This annual tournament is one of Luther's most well-known athletic initiatives and cherished traditions. This prestigious tournament is highly regarded for promoting sportsmanship, respect, hospitality and high-level competition. In 2016, LIT was inducted into the Regina Sports Hall of Fame. Teams from across western Canada are invited to participate each year.
    • The Candlelight Services are a musical celebration of Advent composed of lessons and carols presented by the choristers and instrumentalists of Luther College High School.     We require one Confidential Reference per applicant. Please forward the following link to your child’s English or math teacher: www.ashbury.ca/rec. The Confidential Reference must be completed and submitted within 10 days of receipt.

    Application Fee
    The $150.00 application fee is non-refundable and is payable by Visa, MasterCard or American Express.

    School Reports
    Please forward a copy of the applicant’s final report card from their last completed academic year, as well as any interim report cards as they become available.     Interview
    All applicants will be interviewed during their Day Visit. Applicants unable to visit Ashbury College must participate in a telephone or Skype interview.  To schedule your interview please contact us at [email protected] or +1.613.749.5954.

    Day Visit
    Grades 4–8 applicants must spend a day at the school at any time during the application process. Grades 9 – 11 applicants are encouraged, but not required, to spend a day at Ashbury College at any time during the application process. Applicants living at a distance are excused from the Day Visit requirement. Please email [email protected] or call +1.613.749.5954 to make arrangements for a Day Visit

    Entrance Examination
    The Entrance Exam consists of a writing sample (not knowledge-based) and a standardized multiple-choice test for reading, mathematics and English-language skills at the applicant’s current grade level. For those living at a distance arrangements can be made to write the examination in your home community. Please bring a pencil, eraser, calculator, protractor and ruler to the exam; the protractor is not required for Grade 4 applicants. Registration is not required. Entrance examination dates.

    Students may also write the SSAT (Additional Fee).
