    Curriculum pace

    Standard-enriched
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

    Academic culture

    Rigorous
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    Our Take

    Our Take

    LUTHER COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

Luther College High School was established in 1913 as a boys’ boarding school, and with just 32 students that inaugural year. Girls were first admitted in 1920, and over the years there have been other changes, too. Today the population is predominantly day students, though there is still a sizable boarding program. The High School campus completed a $18.3 million dollar expansion in 2014 which includes a new performance stage, three new classrooms (two of which are dedicated to fine arts), a gymnasium and student fitness training centre, a student commons, and upgrades to existing structures. The school also has fully renovated science laboratories and extensively upgraded on-campus dormitories. The motto “Quality Education in a Christian context” reflects an emphasis on the whole person—intellectually, emotionally, spiritually and physically—within a progressive Christian context. The values that provide a foundation for the program are rightly a draw. The ideal student is one who can thrive in an active, diverse school community, and who is intending to proceed to post-secondary studies after graduation.

    HAVEN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

The school makes good use of the location, including competitions and outreach with nearby universities, Waterloo and Laurier. Haven is very much a preparatory college, attracting students who intend to advance to post-secondary studies, particularly within North America. That said, there is a dedication to ensuring that they live well day-to-day, challenging themselves, yes, but also having time in their day to reflect and enjoy the experience. The diversity of the student body adds to the sense of internationalism, though with an annual enrollment of 100, students find themselves in a close-knit community of like-minded, academically inclined peers and mentors. All the services are represented and then some, including counsellors to advise and help students through the visa and student permit application process. A short-term student exchange program—they come for month-long sessions—is unique, and offered to student in Grades Grade 7 through Grade 11.

    Message

Dr. Mark Anderson is the Head of School/Principal.

Welcome to Haven International School, where our standard of excellence provides our international and local students with the foundation for entrance into top ranked Canadian and world universities. This is an exciting stage in your child’s life; they will join us ready to enjoy new experiences and face new challenges. By the time they finish here at Haven International School, they will be equipped to leave with the confidence, knowledge, skills and responsibility essential for them to flourish in university and ultimately become active and contributing members of society.

Haven’s students and their teachers work together in a caring, vibrant community that promotes personal and academic growth. This high quality ‘student centred’ learning environment supports each student’s unique needs and goals, while building on their strengths and weaknesses. Our blend of local Ontario and international students live, learn and grow in an environment, which emphasizes excellence, responsibility and morality, both inside and outside the classroom. Students are constantly motivated, challenged and stimulated to always strive to be the very best that they can be in everything that they do and at all times.

Haven’s academic and English as a Second Language programs are based on the curriculum expectations of the Ontario Ministry of Education and lead to the awarding of the prestigious Ontario Secondary School Diploma. This diploma is recognised worldwide as meeting the entrance requirement for university.

Far from being a blank canvas, your students join us with a rich palette of their own colours. We recognise the unique qualities of each of our students and we celebrate their individual talents. Haven students are reflective thinkers, creative problem-solvers, curious learners and energetic performers. Our exceptional co-curricular provision sets us apart: whatever your child’s passion and enthusiasm, there will be an activity just right for them and lots of new things to try.
