In Canada, “lycée” most typically references a relationship with the French ministry of education, and that’s true of Lycée international de Calgary. That’s of interest to French nationals, perhaps particularly, or to families expecting to move outside of Canada—say to France, for example—prior to the end of a student’s secondary career. Indeed, when the school was established in 1966, that’s exactly the community it was intending to address, and enrolment was reserved for the children of French nationals. Times have changed, and today most families that enrol at Lycée international de Calgary don’t fall into that narrow category. Rather, they are looking for a strong language program, one that is more robust than those found in public schools. They are also looking for a curriculum that is delivered through a different lens, one that is more cognizant of the diversity of the global community, and more reflective of a student’s place within that wider world. Certainly, Lycée international de Calgary provides all of that. The ideal student is one looking for a challenge and to learn within a diverse community of peers.

Trilingual in French, English and Spanish, he has been a speaker, trainer and workshop leader in bilingual education best practices for teachers and administrators. Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.
Liberal Arts curricula share with traditional programs their emphasis on core knowledge-acquisition, but tend to borrow more best practices from the progressive approach. A Liberal Arts program might still feature group work and projects, for example, contrary to the more singular emphasis on tests and essays at a Traditional program.

Core Knowledge
The Thematic approach organizes the curriculum around certain themes or cultural universals. Students might spend time focused on food. Then they might focus on transportation or government, and so on.
Usually focused on teaching history and geography at an early age, the core knowledge approach uses story, drama, reading, and discussion to teach about significant people, places, and events. Breadth of content and knowledge is emphasized. The curriculum is often organized according to the underlying logic of the content: history might be taught sequentially, for example (as students move through the grades).
Starting in Grade 2, students receive formal instruction in social studies. Following the Alberta curriculum, Social Studies uses a thematic approach to expose young minds to local, national, and international issues. Our students also benefit from the French Ministry of Education curriculum which starts formal instruction in history and geography in Grade 3.
The basis of our program is a core knowledge but is organized with themes running through it that is co-ordinated with our literature program. Social justice is a key focus of the school and is not relegated to our social studies program.
Perennialism
These programs represent an equal balance between the perennialist and pragmatic approach to teaching the humanities and social sciences.
Perennialism in the humanities and social sciences emphasizes the idea of education being a kind of “conversation” between generations, and so frequently turns to “Great Works” and “Big Ideas” for teaching-content. Perennialist programs approach past works on their own terms; as if they might actually help students understand “today” better. Past works are not viewed as mere historical artifacts, but as gateways to a deeper understanding of the human condition. History (and, by extension, the humanities in general) therefore plays a large role in perennialist curriculums, though social sciences like economics, psychology, and sociology can still be taught. There is a strong Liberal Arts bent to perennialist programs. The key goals are to develop critical thinking, a strong foundation of core knowledge (or “cultural literacy”), and persuasion skills through informed debate and extensive practice in essay writing.
Our students benefit from studying social studies and history/geography. The combination of these subjects provides students with a strong background to draw upon while contemplating contemporary issues.
Northmount students enjoy learning about the history and geography of the world around them. In the Senior Division, students will learn about exciting and important world issues, politics, and economics. They will learn about the important events that shaped modern day Canada, from First contact with European settlers through to New France, British North America and then Confederation. This journey is filled with inquiry, discovery, and interactive learning experiences. With the study of important and relevant historical events, as well as of current economic and political issues, students begin to learn valuable lessons and skills of how to be positive contributors of Canadian society. Field trips also form an integral part of the course – boys get to explore the real world as they learn the theory in the classroom.

Computers are used in the classroom from time to time, but integrating technology into everything students do is not a dominant focus. Digital literacy is understood to be a legitimate skill in the 21st century, but not one that should distract from teaching the subject at hand, or more fundamental skills and literacies. Lycée international de Calgary offers a full-time Preschool and Kindergarten Program for children aged 3 to 5. Our program is more than a daycare: it is a passport to the world. Through games, discovery, artistic activities and a range of diverse exercises, children learn to express themselves, they acquire a broader vocabulary and discover the written word. The main goal of the Preschool/Kindergarten Program is for the child to acquire rich, organized language and to be understood by others and prepares them for the next step in their education.
The main focus of the Kindergarten program is for boys to develop a love of learning. Furthermore, the boys are given an excellent academic, athletic, artistic, social, and spiritual foundation. Northmount has an energetic and talented group of teachers that strives to individualize its instruction and programs. Teachers enrich student learning as well as provide additional help and encouragement when needed. It is so well developed that by the end of senior kindergarten our boys read, write and do mathematics at a Grade 1 standard, which sets them well on the path towards academic success.

The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).
Northmount's CASTLE Program is there to increase the stride in a students' learning pace. The CASTLE Program is an individualized instruction which allows each boy to achieve their greatest potential within our enriched and accelerated academic setting.

No prior French exposure is needed to enroll in our Preschool and Kindergarten Programs.
Our French Language Intensive Program (FLIP) allows us to welcome new students (Grades 1 and 2) who have little or no prior exposure to the French language.
STEPS TO ADMISSION
1.Please complete and return the on line application together with a copy of the applicant’s two most recent report cards.
2.Upon receipt of the completed application and the application fee of $200.00, a date will be scheduled for your son’s educational assessment and family interview with the Director of Admissions.
