Maria Montessori opened her first school in 1907, so the Montessori method has been with us, fully formed, for more than a century. The ideas that Montessori brought to the table have found their way into mainstream education in a variety of ways. That said, the whole is truly greater than the sum of any of the parts, and it’s the sum that Peel Montessori offers. As that suggests, the school has remained very true to the founders’ initial intentions, namely to create a place that provides a strong academic foundation in a caring, open, and supportive environment. While reading, writing, and numeracy are key—just as they should be—so is the development of creativity and social engagement. Bates believes that children learn as much in music class as they do in math class, and she’s right of course. As such, the program promotes links across the curriculum, allowing children to see those connections while also broadening their horizons of interest. The strength of the program is reflected by the reputation that CGS has earned over the thirty-plus years of its life.

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.
Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.

Mathematics is approached with a child experiencing a concept with concrete materials in order for them to understand the process. This process allows the child to grasp concepts with understanding and clarity, avoiding learning gaps. A child completes the work independent of the materials when they are ready, for if a child is struggling with a concept, they are able to spend the time to solidify their understanding. This is essential as mathematical concepts build upon one other and gaps in previous skills compound over time, affecting a child’s confidence, understanding, and mathematical performance. If a child grasps mathematical processes with ease, they are able to advance through skills at their own pace and level, challenging their learning, igniting interest, avoiding boredom, and often results in a child surpassing grade level expectations.
Methods for teaching math vary widely from school to school and it is a subject of great debate in the educational community. ‘New’ Math (the current multi-strategy, collaborative, language based approach to math) can be confusing for parents, as most of us learned math largely by rote. Our phonics program, Remediation Plus, (R+) was brought to Children’s Garden School by our Principal, Marie Bates, after discovering its extreme effectiveness for her own child. The program breaks phonetic skills into logical, step-by-step, highly organized units. Watching our students independently sound out words, finger spell, and check for vowels is a wonderful sight! They see something on the page and they go to work to figure out what is happening. R+ gives them the tools they need. Teachers combine R+ with integrated language arts activities (storytelling, games and art). Our young students experience high levels of success and become confident young readers.

Preschool children come to us with varying degrees of fine motor skill. Writing exercises are designed with each particular student in mind. For JK and SK students, printing exercises are built into the Remediation Plus program and students spend a lot of time practising their skills each day across their Language Arts curriculum. Grade 1-3 students use Handwriting Without Tears. Cursive is introduced at the end of Grade 2 for those students that are ready and all students begin cursive writing in Grade 3.

Inquiry-based science emphasizes teaching science as a way of thinking or practice, and therefore tries to get students “doing” science as much as possible -- and not just “learning” it. The academic culture at CGS is unequivocally supportive. Our students are very young children and, first and foremost, they require a nurturing, warm, encouraging environment for learning. Genuine academic achievement comes when children are in a challenging but flexible environment that acknowledges their learning style and pace. It is important to note that our supportive environment is never meant to hinder independence. Children are always encouraged to solve problems on their own, whenever possible.

The intellectual and personal growth are equally essential in developing the emotional, intellectual, social, and physical aspects of the whole child. High academic and personal standards and expectations are established and support is provided to enable each student to work to his or her fullest potential, given their individual capabilities.
Being a responsible, competent, and caring human can be challenging. Learning to make good choices from moment to moment is a huge part of growing up. Our students are very young and giving them the support and structure they need to realize their best selves is one of our most important jobs as educators. Autism
Refers to a range of conditions that involve challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, and speech and nonverbal communication. They also involve unique strengths and differences. For instance, there are persons with both low- and high-functioning autism (some claim the latter is identical to Asperger's syndrome).

Asperger's Syndrome
On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour.

his is associated with impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth, and a particular set of facial characteristics.

Clinical Depression
This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. his refers to a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. CP is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture.

Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder which weakens the body's muscles. Causes, symptoms, age of onset, and prognosis vary between individuals.

Spina Bifida
This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. It can lead to a number of physical challenges, including paralysis or weakness in the legs, bowel and bladder incontinence, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the brain), and deformities of the spine.

Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder)
This is a Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Also known as "sensory integration disorder," it affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It may also affect speech.

Visual impairment is a decreased ability or inability to see that can't be fixed in usual ways, such as with glasses. Some people are completely blind, while others have what's called "legal blindness."

Some children with learning differences can be accommodated in our regular classes. Special education classes are not available. Once a Montessori Personal Education Plan is determined, class teaching staff is offered informal support and guidance to implement any accommodations/modifications. Children are assessed on an individual basis to ensure a good fit between our program and the individual needs of the student.
We are open to all types of learners at CGS. If we can meet a child's needs, and they can manage the program, we will work to create an environment for that child to be successful at school.
Peel Montessori provides an environment that encourages children to grow and develop to their potential. Experiential, tactile exercises and our ability to personalize the program to fit individual learning needs, results in a small number of children considered for our program. Careful observation and/or psycho-educational assessment allows us to determine whether our program can meet each individual learning difference, as we aspire to provide realistic, attainable support. A student’s capabilities are assessed including their strengths, challenging areas, and learning style. Should our program not be a good fit, or if it cannot meet the student’s needs, referrals are provided.
If a child develops difficulties while at CGS, staff will meet with the family to create a plan that best supports the child to be successful at CGS. We work with many kinds of learners.

Our main criteria for acceptance, given that our students are still so young, is that they are able to manage our very busy program. Curriculum is personalized so different development stages and learning strengths can be accommodated.
Step 1: The first step in our Admissions process is a phone call. We'd like to tell you more about our school and to learn about your family, too.
Step 2: Applications are available online at cgsschool.com
Please note, a non-refundable credit card payment of $100 is required to submit your application. All applications are dated, and admission decisions are based on a first-come, first-served basis. Offers of admission cannot be made until your tour has been completed and the application and fee is received in full.
Step 3: Once your application has been submitted, the Director of Admissions will arrange a time for you and your child to visit the school. Children are expected to attend the tour with you. Students are interviewed informally during a school tour and no entrance tests are required. Please note that additional assessment may be required if recommended by CGS staff.
Step 4: After Re-registration is complete for currently enrolled CGS students, offers of Admission will be made to successful NEW applicants.
Offers of admission are held for one week. If an offer of admission is not accepted at the end of this period, it will expire and we will continue through our list of applicants.
The re-registration process for currently enrolled CGS Early Start and JK students is completed in November each year.
The re-registration process for currently enrolled CGS SK through Grade 3 students is completed in February each year.
