Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. We have adopted a pure Singapore Math curriculum because Ontario’s standards don’t fully prepare students for success and lack structure. Our blended focus fosters deep conceptual understanding, structure, and critical thinking, all of which are essential for higher-level math. We recognized that the Ontario curriculum often lacks the rigor necessary for students to be competitive, so our goal is to ensure that by Grade 9, our students are on par with international math learners. At InnovOak, we teach math as a language through our "Speak Math" approach. This method encourages students to articulate their mathematical thinking clearly and confidently, treating math as a language to be mastered. By "Speaking Math", students gain a stronger understanding of the subject, improving both fluency and comprehension. This holistic approach not only prepares students for success in math but also keeps their post-secondary pathways open beyond Grade 11, where many typically struggle.
In PreK to Grade 8 we use Dimensions as our primary book. Teachers in Senior School are bound by AP and the OSSD, and will chose materials from the Trillium list that are current and are focused on university preparations.
There are no calculators, until a student approaches high school math concepts. As we cheerfully inform our students - "Your brain is your calculator!"

Past works are not viewed as mere historical artifacts, but as gateways to a deeper understanding of the human condition. History (and, by extension, the humanities in general) therefore plays a large role in perennialist curriculums, though social sciences like economics, psychology, and sociology can still be taught. There is a strong Liberal Arts bent to perennialist programs. The key goals are to develop critical thinking, a strong foundation of core knowledge (or “cultural literacy”), and persuasion skills through informed debate and extensive practice in essay writing.

We introduce French starting in JK, going beyond the Ontario curriculum to meet international language standards, specifically the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Creative
Creative arts programs are studio-driven. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.
Our arts program at InnovOak strikes an equal balance between receptive and creative learning, giving students a deep appreciation for art history and the opportunity to actively engage in art creation. In addition to studying the principles of visual arts, music, drama, and theatre, students participate in studio work that fosters their cognitive and emotional development. To ensure success in high school courses such as AMU1O, ADA1O, and AVI1O, we build strong foundations from an early age. This includes vocal training in Grades 1-3, learning brass instruments in Grades 4-6, and strings in Grades 7-8. We set ambitious goals, such as school-wide concerts, arts nights, and performances, giving students the opportunity to showcase their talents. By blending expressive creativity and disciplined skill-building, we provide students with the tools they need to thrive in both artistic appreciation and practical execution as they advance through our program.

Computers are used in the classroom from time to time, but integrating technology into everything students do is not a dominant focus. Digital literacy is understood to be a legitimate skill in the 21st century, but not one that should distract from teaching the subject at hand, or more fundamental skills and literacies. The idea is today’s students, being “digital natives”, are likely exposed to computers and new media enough outside the classroom: the role of the school, rather, should be to develop competencies that may otherwise get missed.

Our physical education program follows the Ontario curriculum, emphasizing a commitment to healthy lifestyles and fitness. We offer a well-rounded approach, incorporating individual and team sports, helping students develop skills in participation, teamwork, and self-discipline. Beyond traditional activities, we include non-traditional options such as rock climbing, skating, and swimming, giving students the chance to challenge themselves in new ways. Academic
Montessori programs aimed at preschool and Kindergarten- aged children allow young learners to choose which “tasks” or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles -- the essential features of these puzzles being they contain a “right answer” and allow for self-correction. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on learning being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with children developing a sense of self-sufficiency and confidence. Specially trained teachers act as guides, introducing children to progressively more difficult materials when appropriate. A Montessori classroom is typically very calm and orderly, with children working alone or, sometimes, in small groups.

Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
In a spirited, happy, and nurturing environment, children interact with kindness and friendship as they develop a lifelong enjoyment of learning. Children have a natural curiosity to explore and the classrooms and programme are organized to enables each child to learn to their individual potential at their pace. Children learn from each other and the teacher using hands-on activities and grow personally in character, creativity, and self-confidence through the positive interactions. Early reading, math, and writing are a introduced when readiness is observed while children continue to refine their senses, hand-eye coordination, concentration, social interactions, and grace and courtesy.

Accelerated
The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).
The Montessori hands-on activities and inherent organization of the class allows for flexible pacing and personalized growth. One-on-one lessons are presented when readiness is observed, and the multi-year groupings allow for individualized academic and social stimulation and pace. Independent learning strategies enable personalized pacing in all subject areas.
Because many students come from diverse school experiences, we tailor teaching methods through differentiated instruction to adjust content, process, and product for individualized needs. Rigorous
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.
Although an advanced curriculum content, each student is supported and expected to work and progress to his or her individual potential. Student capabilities, attitude, and internal drive are reflective of their overall academic performance. High expectations are established for intellectual and personal development in areas that can include strength of character, self-regulation, and respectful nature. Some children with learning differences can be accommodated in our regular classes. Special education classes are not available. Once a Montessori Personal Education Plan is determined, class teaching staff is offered informal support and guidance to implement any accommodations/modifications. Children are assessed on an individual basis to ensure a good fit between our program and the individual needs of the student.
While we do not offer in-house programs for specialized support services such as social work, occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and speech-language pathology (SLP), we fully support external providers coming into the school during the school day to deliver these programs. We believe that facilitating access to these services, identified by parents as essential, ensures the best outcomes for students and their families. By allowing these services to be provided on-site, we make it easier for students to benefit from them, increasing the likelihood of program success. We have established connections with professionals in the fields of social work, OT, PT, and SLP, and can refer parents to trusted partners when needed. Additionally, we can recommend counselors and social workers when appropriate, offering families a network of support to ensure their child's educational and developmental success.
Peel Montessori provides an environment that encourages children to grow and develop to their potential. Experiential, tactile exercises and our ability to personalize the program to fit individual learning needs, results in a small number of children considered for our program. Careful observation and/or psycho-educational assessment allows us to determine whether our program can meet each individual learning difference, as we aspire to provide realistic, attainable support. A student’s capabilities are assessed including their strengths, challenging areas, and learning style. Should our program not be a good fit, or if it cannot meet the student’s needs, referrals are provided.
At InnovOak, we do not actively seek students who require an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). However, if challenges arise, we leverage our special education expertise, Student Success model, and staff skills to create learning plans and IEPs tailored to the student’s needs. We work closely with families to ensure effective support is provided. If needs evolve, we collaborate with parents to discuss future academic goals and potential pathways, including whether a different setting may be more suitable. We also explore creative options, such as adding resource support or staff capacity. If helpful, we may consider the use of Educational Assistants or tutors, with these services provided by the school but funded in addition to tuition.
