    Developmental Priorities

    N/A

    Balanced
Equal emphasis is placed on a balance of priorities: intellectual, emotional, social and physical cultivation.
    Social
The goal is to cultivate "socially aware and active citizens, motivated to change the world (or their community) for the better."

    Academics

    Curriculum

    N/A

    Progressive

    Curriculum pace

    N/A

    Student-paced
The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.

    Academic culture

    N/A

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    Preschool/K curriculum

    N/A

    Play-based
Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.

    NORTH POINT SCHOOL

"North Point’s program is designed to ensure that students master core skills, while allowing them to further explore topics that they are passionate about. We design environments and experiences that are specifically geared to challenge and engage learners by focusing on their interests in practical problem-solving, hands-on learning, leadership and outdoor exploration. We understand the importance of freedom within the school structure and of developmentally appropriate education."

What tradeoffs has school_name made to serve families in this way?

What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

    NORTH POINT SCHOOL

"We allocate a significant amount of our resources to creating experiential opportunities for our students to learn by doing. Traditional methods of learning such as sitting in a desk quietly all day are counter to our culture of providing real world opportunities for our students to grow and develop their academic and social skills. Character development is just as critical as cognitive development. We value a personalized and relational approach to learning where teachers get to know their students very well and can help customize a program that works for them."

    NORTH POINT SCHOOL

"North Point started as a Boys School in 2015 and in 2022 launched a Girls School and Co-Ed High School to round out our school offerings. In 2021 we added a second campus to accommodate our growth and in 9 years have grown from 7 students to 220 students with continued growth ahead. In 2023, we purchased 74 acres of stunning property in SW Calgary that features 24 acres of beautiful natural forest for our students to take experiential learning to another level. Our long term vision is to build our permanent school home on this property with a campus that will include a boys school, girls school and co-ed high school. North Point is an inclusive educational environment including students with mild/moderate learning disabilities or those diagnosed with ADHD. Depending on the needs of each child, we determine if North Point is the right fit."

    NORTH POINT SCHOOL

"Students/families who get the most out of their time at North Point tend to be those who embrace a balanced mindset around academic, social and character development. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

    NORTH POINT SCHOOL

"Families looking for a strict and academically rigid approach to learning might not find our balanced approach to fun, experiential education appealing. Although we place significant emphasis on being kind and respectful and pursuing personal academic excellence within our learning environment we also celebrate active, energetic and creative students that express themselves in various ways."

"This is student-driven education, designed to help each student discover and nourish their talents and passions. They will have a clear vision of who they want to become, and they will have the academic and real-world skills needed to get there. North Point is about changing the way all students are taught on every level, working with their strengths, and appealing to their distinct learning style."

What do families find surprising about school_name?

What might families find surprising about your school?

    NORTH POINT SCHOOL

"Parents find the breadth of our Our Active Living program surprising. It is about enhancing education by providing fun, safe, cross-curricular activities that give practical application to concepts learned in the classroom. These activities also provide opportunity for character building, teamwork and leadership. Examples of these activities include:
    · Gardening · Business Fair · Camping trips · Comedy/Drama Workshops · Team-Building Adventures – i.e. high ropes course
    · Community Service"

    NORTH POINT SCHOOL

"We've invested a significant amount of time, energy and resources into building out our high school programming. As a very small high school we offer all of the courses required for post-secondary entrance into any institution in the world. With growth, we've also been able to create some very strong team teaching units within all of our schools whereby subject area specialists are leading courses, particularly when students get into Grade 6 and beyond. This team approach allows our staff to get to know the students very well, while teaching their particular area of passion and expertise. Our teachers appreciate working closely with their colleagues to create a robust learning environment."

How will school_name change in the next 5 years?

How will your school change in the next 5 years?

    NORTH POINT SCHOOL

"We have some very exciting and interesting times ahead as we plan our future campus on our newly acquired property. State of the art laboratories, athletic facilities, art studios, and outdoor experiential learning centers such as gardens and a greenhouse, are at the forefront of where we want to be over the next 10 years. Our journey has only just begun as we celebrate our 10th year at North Point."
