Southpointe Academy is a relatively young school, having been founded in 2000, and just as there are benefits with age, there are also benefits with youth. Unlike older schools that need to evolve their programs and infrastructure to meet the changing needs of students, Southpointe was formed around those needs, i.e., the skills, values, and behaviours students will need to succeed in university and professional life. Starting with a primary and elementary program, the school quickly grew to include the high school years. A sparkling new facility, opened in 2012, was purpose built to house the programs, with spaces conducive to project-oriented learning and creative collaboration. The curricular offerings, including the International Baccalaureate and a nice compliment of AP courses, are rightly a draw for the families that enrol here. So too is the attention to growing an awareness of global citizenship, as perhaps best exemplified in partnerships with schools in China, France, Spain, and the US. Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. Students are then led to blend these sounds together to sound out and recognize the whole word. Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. We approach academic performance with the belief that all students are unique and can succeed even if they require different evidence-based practices in order to learn and demonstrate their skills. We structure our learning environment in a way that demonstrates unconditional positive regard for our students' abilities while removing barriers to learning through inclusive, adaptive instructional practices. We engage students in a setting with lower student-to-teacher ratios, provide learning plans to 100% of our pupils, and assign faculty advisors to all learners to ensure students are always seen and supported. This allows our faculty to form collegial relationships with students so that they can facilitate the development of students to become the best version of themselves possible.

We enrol students who are developmentally ready for the grade they are entering, as it is important that each student demonstrates age-appropriate skillsets for their learning environment. Students who are curious about the world around them and parallel the mission of the IB to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world.

After completing an application to Southpointe, applicants for all grade levels will be invited to attend our Prospective Student Assessments in January. Students applying to Kindergarten to Grade 10 will take part in teacher-prepared activities and assessments.
Applicants in Grades 6-10 who are unable to attend an in-person assessment, must submit the appropriate Middle or Upper Level SSAT assessment to Southpointe's Admissions Department by the end of January for consideration.

We encourage all interested families to reach out via our website. From there you will be greeted by our knowledge administrator to arrange an intake interview. From there a class visit is required and we will work with families and the student to arrange a visit that will work best for their learning and social emotional needs. During the class visit(s) we observe the students response to 1:1 engagement, interaction with the class material and response to differentiation, and the students engament with social opportunities. After the visit(s) data is gathered and the family is contacted about next steps. In order to provide the greatest opportunity for success offers of admissions are always specific to the learner needs and may include a scaffolded entry.
