West Island College was founded in Montreal in 1974, and was intended to provide a strong bilingual option for families living on Montreal’s West Island. The program there provided a foundation, and a name, for West Island College in Calgary when it was established in 1982. That said, the school quickly established its own independent operations and identity. As such, it was free to build and grow to meet the needs of its students, and it certainly has. The international programs are robust, as are the language programs, all of which contribute to the overall culture of the school. It’s a very interactive, engaging environment, one that requires a lot of the students who attend while also providing the support they need to succeed. The ideal student is one who shares the school’s foundational values and can thrive in a very active and engaging student environment.

The school is able to provide a very broad range of programming while, at the same time, delivering a close, intimate student experience. The student population is academically inclined, and the program is focused on university preparation. As such, students enter a community of learners that share a like mind toward academic achievement. The facilities are up-to-date, often strikingly so, as is particularly the case with the WJ Collett School, home to the K-6 program. Progressive classroom design is combined with a consistent, purpose-oriented architectural aesthetic. Parents and students who turn to Rundle are looking for an engaging, personalized, academically inclined learning environment. And that’s precisely what they find.

Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. At Rundle Academy and Rundle College, we are proud of the unique and talented students who help create our dynamic learning environment. Our students are confident in small working environments and are highly motivated and engaged learners who have a strong desire to participate and contribute to our school community. Volunteerism and humanitarian efforts are also important parts of the culture at Rundle as students become strong and compassionate leaders and citizens. Rundle Academy and College welcome applicants who demonstrate - strong academic school standings - exceptional leadership qualities and interests - keen interest in the arts, athletics, and academics - a desire to volunteer and accept new challenges - an intent to pursue post-secondary education In addition, at Rundle Academy one factor central to the success of our program is attributed to the narrow profile of our students, all of whom must be diagnosed with a learning disability and/or ADHD. The Academy's mandate is to prepare students for entry to post-secondary studies after high school. Unfortunately, we do not offer a program or have support for students diagnosed on the Autism spectrum. Please note that applicants must demonstrate grade-appropriate proficiency in all facets of the English language in order to succeed academically and to fully participate in school life at Rundle College and Academy. We do not offer English as a Second Language (ESL) or English Language Learner (ELL) programs.
WIC administers the CCAT (Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test), which is a 90-minute standardized test for students entering Gr. 7 – 12. Parents and students must understand that test results are only one part of the admissions process. Spending huge amounts of time and money preparing for the standardized test is not recommended.
Please note, we will accept the SSAT instead of our locally offered entrance exams. Choose West Island College as a recipient in the SSAT online tool.
