Go to child profileAlcuin College is a progressive, independent K-12 school rooted in curiosity-led learning. We specialize in providing an innovative, hands-on education based on the Liberal Arts. As an independent school on Vancouver’s North Shore, Alcuin attracts students who are coping in their current schools, but are not necessarily thriving, or who are uninspired. Our very small class sizes ensure personal attention, and our challenging curriculum is enriched by the resources and expertise available in our local community.
What learning looks like now: Alcuin College looks forward to welcoming all students back to school on Thursday, September 8, 2020. Measures that align with the BC Health and Safety guidelines for Stage 2 return to school, will be in place to ensure the health and safety of our students, families, and community, while maximising in-class instruction and providing continuity of learning. As a small school, we are able to organise our students and teachers into two learning groups, Junior and Senior, that interact primarily with one another during both instructional and non-instructional time. Numbers in these learning groups fall well within the BC Ministry of Education k-12 guidelines that specify a maximum of 60 students and teachers per learning group in the elementary grades and 120 per learning group in the secondary grades. Heath and safety protocols will include physical distancing, the wearing of non-medical face masks when physical distancing cannot be maintained, regular cleaning and sanitising and restricted access to the school. Technology is fundamental to how we learn at Alcuin College, and our small class sizes allow us to adapt quickly to a remote learning environment, should it be necessary. Alcuin is a programme wrapped around each student. It is not, and never has been, dependent on location. It is our goal, as always, to ensure that our students continue to experience quality in their learning, both at the elementary and high school levels.

Join us online for our next Open House and live Q&A session to learn more about the unique benefits of an education at Alcuin College. These events provide parents with the opportunity to meet with teachers and with our Head of School, Stella Ablett, to learn about how Alcuin College is more than a school – it is a community of lifelong learners. Our teachers will guide you through the academic programme, including our current restart programme and remote learning model, and share what it means to be part of our special community.
Alcuin College was founded in 2012 in the understanding that learning begins with a relationship between student and teacher, and flourishes within a community of learners. The goal is to begin with all the things that students bring with them into the classroom—the curiosities, the concerns—and to use them as the basis for aspirations—to learn, to grow, and connect with others. As much as possible, instruction is tutorial, bringing students together in small groups around specific tasks or inquiries. Teachers are hired for both their experience in the classroom as well as in the community, which adds a nice dimension to the life of the school, in that learning is taken beyond the walls of the school itself. The curriculum is challenging, though the support is as well, ensuring that students remain on task and engaged.
