(4.5) Overall Experience
My experience at Canada Nord Academy was very positive, particularly because the OSSD pathway gave me the flexibility I needed as an art-focused student. My goal was to prepare for university while also spending significant time developing my art portfolio, so I wanted a high school pathway that would allow me to manage my academic studies and portfolio preparation more effectively. I chose to complete Grade 12 through Canada Nord Academy because the OSSD structure provided a clear academic pathway while giving me more flexibility in how I organized my time. This was especially valuable during the portfolio preparation period, when I needed to balance coursework with developing and refining my artwork. I also appreciated the academic guidance I received from the school. The course planning was clear, and the academic team helped me understand which courses I needed and how they related to my future university plans. Teachers also provided detailed feedback on my assignments, and I could get support when I had questions. Overall, I felt that Canada Nord Academy allowed me to maintain my academic progress without taking away too much time from my portfolio preparation. I graduated with a clearer pathway toward my goal of studying art and design at OCAD University.
Looking Back
Looking back, the biggest advantage of my experience was the flexibility of the OSSD pathway. As an art student, I needed substantial time to work on my portfolio, and being able to manage my academic schedule more flexibly allowed me to give my portfolio the attention it required while continuing to meet my high school academic requirements.
Current Perspective
Now that I have completed Grade 12, I feel that choosing the OSSD pathway was a good decision for my academic and creative goals. It allowed me to work toward the Ontario secondary school requirements while also giving me more flexibility to develop my portfolio for university applications.
Your Advice
My advice to other art students is to think about your university requirements and portfolio preparation at the same time. If your target is an art or design university, your portfolio is extremely important, so having a flexible academic pathway can make it easier to balance your coursework with the time needed to develop your creative work.
(4.5) School Leadership
I found the school administration professional and responsive throughout my studies. The communication about courses, academic requirements and my study pathway was clear, which was important because I was completing Grade 12 with a specific university goal in mind. I also appreciated that the school understood that my priorities were slightly different from those of a traditional student. As an art-focused student, I needed to balance my academic requirements with portfolio preparation, and the academic guidance helped me plan my courses accordingly.
(4.5) Teaching
I was satisfied with the quality of teaching at Canada Nord Academy. The teachers provided clear instructions and detailed feedback on my assignments, which helped me understand what was expected and where I could improve. The teachers provided clear instructions and detailed feedback on my assignments, which helped me understand what was expected and where I could improve. Because I was also spending significant time developing my art portfolio, I appreciated having a structured academic program that allowed me to manage my coursework while maintaining focus on my creative work. When I had questions about assignments or course requirements, I was able to get clarification and support. Overall, I felt the learning environment was supportive, flexible, and well-suited to my needs as an art-focused student preparing for university applications. It gave me confidence to balance academics and portfolio development effectively throughout my Grade 12 academic year.
(4.5) Academics
The academic flexibility of the OSSD pathway was one of the main reasons I chose Canada Nord Academy for Grade 12. As an art student preparing for university, I needed to meet my academic requirements while also dedicating substantial time to portfolio development. The structure of the program made it easier for me to balance both priorities without feeling overwhelmed. The school provided clear guidance on course selection and academic requirements, which helped me understand what I needed to complete for graduation and future university applications. This allowed me to plan my time more effectively and maintain a better balance between academic work and portfolio preparation. I also appreciated that I could adjust my study pace when needed. For me, the biggest strength was that the academic pathway supported my individual university goal rather than requiring me to follow a rigid schedule that did not fit my needs.
(4) School Life
My experience was different from that of a traditional on-campus student because I chose a more flexible learning pathway. For me, this was actually an advantage because I needed additional time and flexibility to work on my art portfolio while still completing Grade 12 requirements. I enjoyed having more control over my study schedule and being able to organize my academic work around my creative projects. At the same time, the online learning format required me to be responsible for managing my own time, staying disciplined, and consistently keeping up with assignments and deadlines. I think this type of learning environment is particularly suitable for students who are independent and have specific goals outside of traditional classroom learning, especially those balancing academics with creative or professional development.
(4.5) Admissions
The admissions and course planning process was clear and straightforward. What was particularly important to me was being able to explain my future goal of studying art and design and have my Grade 12 pathway planned around that goal from the beginning. The school helped me understand the academic requirements I needed to complete and how the OSSD pathway could fit with my university plans. This gave me more confidence that I could work toward my academic requirements while also dedicating enough time to my portfolio development. For students applying to an art-focused university, I would recommend discussing your target programs with the school early before selecting your courses, so your academic plan can better support your long-term goals.
(4.5) University placement and counselling
The university planning support was particularly useful because my goal was to pursue art and design at OCAD University. I needed to think about two things at the same time: meeting the academic requirements for university admission and developing a strong, competitive portfolio. The OSSD pathway gave me a suitable academic route for meeting the Ontario secondary school requirements while providing the flexibility I needed to dedicate more time to my portfolio. The school also helped me understand how my Grade 12 course choices related to my university plans and application strategy. For an art student, I think this balance is very important. University preparation is not only about grades; portfolio development also requires time, planning, and consistent effort over time. Having a flexible academic pathway allowed me to manage both effectively.
