(5) Student Experience
My child’s experience has been quite positive overall. One thing I noticed is that the courses require a fair amount of independent work, so my child has had to take more responsibility to keep up with the lessons, complete assignments, and prepare for quizzes. At first, this took some adjustment because it is different from being in a regular classroom where a teacher is there in person. However, the course materials and resources have generally been clear enough for my child to work through the lessons independently. Some of the assignments and quizzes are challenging, which I think is helpful because my child has to actually understand the material rather than simply complete the work. It has also been encouraging to see the sense of accomplishment after finishing a difficult assignment or quiz. The teacher's feedback has been another useful part of the experience, as it gives my child an idea of what was done well and what could be improved. Overall, I think the experience has helped my child become more comfortable with independent learning while still having some guidance along the way.
Why Canada Nord Academy?
I wasn’t specifically looking for an online school. I was looking for a way for my child to take some additional high school credits while still having some flexibility around how and when the learning could be done. Online or blended learning seemed like a practical option for our situation. When I was comparing options, I mainly wanted to know whether the courses were available and what the learning experience would actually be like once my child started. Those were the things that led us to try Canada Nord Academy.
Expectations vs. Reality
The school has worked well for what I needed. My child has been able to take the additional credits without having to change her regular school arrangement. There has been some adjustment to doing more independent learning, but overall my child has been able to manage the coursework. Having assignments, quizzes, and teacher feedback along the way has also helped give some structure to the learning.
Your Advice
With online learning, I think it is important to consider how independent the student is, whether the course instructions and materials are easy to follow, and whether there is someone providing feedback when needed. Every student and family will have different needs, so for me, it was really about finding an option that matched my child’s learning style and our particular situation.

I think online courses can work well even without daily, in-person classes. If students are disciplined and consistent, practical course materials and appropriate teacher guidance can provide enough support for them to learn independently. For us, this has been a flexible and convenient way for my child to earn additional high school credits while fitting the learning around their existing school schedule.
