(5) Student Experience
My child has had a very positive experience at Canada Nord Academy. What he appreciates most is the flexibility of the online learning environment and, more importantly, the individual attention and support he receives from his teachers. He retook two Grade 11 courses, Functions and World History. For him, these courses were about much more than simply improving his grades. He was able to review important concepts, strengthen his foundational knowledge, and develop a better understanding of the material. As an international student, adjusting to the Canadian curriculum and academic expectations can sometimes be challenging. We really appreciated that his teachers were patient, responsible, and willing to adjust their explanations and teaching approaches to meet his individual needs. Over time, we saw our child become more confident and independent in his studies. He now feels much better prepared to return to the classroom for Grade 12.
Why Canada Nord Academy?
We considered several online OSSD schools, including Ontario Virtual School, before making our decision. Ultimately, what tipped the scales in favour of Canada Nord Academy was the level of personal attention and teacher support. We were looking for more than just an online platform where our child could complete courses independently. As parents of an international student, we wanted to know that our child would have teachers who were accessible, responsible, and willing to provide guidance when he needed additional help. We also felt that a more personalized learning environment would be beneficial because our child needed to retake some Grade 11 courses. The teachers’ willingness to understand his individual learning needs and provide appropriate support gave us confidence in our choice. We ultimately felt that Canada Nord offered a good balance between the flexibility of online learning and the personal academic support that our child needed to succeed.
Expectations vs. Reality
Our expectations were that Canada Nord Academy would provide our child with a flexible way to complete his courses and improve his academic performance, and the school certainly met those expectations. What pleasantly surprised us was the extent to which the experience helped strengthen his overall academic foundation. When our child retook the Math and History courses there, he was not simply working toward a higher grade. He was given the opportunity to revisit important concepts, fill in gaps in his previous learning, and develop a much stronger understanding of the material. This has made a noticeable difference in his confidence. As he prepares to return to a traditional classroom setting for Grade 12, he feels much more prepared to handle the increased academic demands. From a parent’s perspective, this experience has provided a very valuable boost before his final year of high school. We also believe that having a stronger academic foundation will benefit him as he prepares for university applications.
Your Advice
The one thing I would tell parents considering Canada Nord Academy is to look beyond the course offerings and tuition and think about the kind of academic support their child actually needs. Online learning requires students to take responsibility for their own progress, but having teachers who are genuinely available and willing to provide individualized support can make a significant difference. This was especially important for our child as an international student. If a student needs to retake courses, strengthen foundational knowledge, or rebuild confidence before Grade 12, I believe this type of learning environment can be very valuable. In our experience, the biggest benefit was not simply that our child was able to improve his grades. More importantly, he developed a stronger understanding of the material and became more confident about his academic abilities. After completing his courses at Canada Nord, he feels better prepared to return to school for Grade 12 and face his final year with greater confidence. We also feel that this stronger preparation will be helpful as he moves toward the university application process.
