Kate has seen the world - but chose Albert College in her old hometown of Belleville on the north shore of Lake Ontario. "I was born here," says Kate, 17, "and went to Albert College from Grades 4 to 9." Then her parents moved - to New Zealand and then Texas. Teachers at her New Zealand private school were stiff and starchy, and the education in Texas, she felt, was not the best.

"I wanted to come back to Albert College very badly," she says. "It's family here."

With her parents still in Texas, she returned for Grade 12, revelling in seeing old faces at the four-day orientation camping trip the school holds in September. "I love being back," bubbles Kate, who was elected graduating class president. And with Albert College's modest enrolment of 300, "I know everyone in the school."

She got extra help from teachers, many of whom live on campus, to make up for gaps in her credits ("They are so patient-and persistent."). "I am so grateful. It's been an amazing year," says Kate, who has been accepted at Queen's University and hopes one day to be a doctor.
