The big picture on Head Start Montessori School

We summarized the school ourselves

Unique to Head Start Montessori is the deep involvement of its founder and director, Naureen Shah, along with director Sara Alvi, who both maintain a hands-on approach and an open-door policy, further strengthening the school’s welcoming environment. Head Start Montessori offers one of Toronto’s only infant Montessori programs, extending up to Grade 3. The school adheres to the AMI Philosophy, is CCMA Accredited, and CCYEA Licensed, reflecting its commitment to high-quality Montessori education. The school’s non-competitive atmosphere and lack of traditional testing contribute to self-driven academic achievements among students. With a focus on individual needs and collaboration with families, Head Start Montessori nurtures well-rounded development, preparing students for lifelong success. Additionally, the school’s curriculum is individualized, encompassing infant, toddler, casa environments, and lower elementary grades, along with extracurriculars like music, yoga, and gymnastics. The school provides summer and March camps, catered hot lunches, and places a strong emphasis on creating a warm, personalized community.

We questioned the school administration

1. Who are you, as a school?

"HEAD START MONTESSORI SCHOOL IS DEDICATED TO THE GROWTH OF EACH CHILD. OUR MISSION IS: Honour the Montessori philosophy of holistically nurturing every child, by adhering to the wisdom of Dr. Maria Montessori. We encourage individual personalities to flourish academically, socially, physically and emotionally. 2. What do you do differently and uniquely well?

Each child at Head Start Montessori has an individualized Montessori curriculum. With both owners, Naureen and Sara, being Montessori trained teachers, parents can be rest assured that their child(ren) are being provided with an authentic Montessori education. We believe that the parents and the school have to collaborate in the best interest of the child. Keeping this in mind, HSM holds many parent workshops throughout the year, as learning never stops!

Head Start Montessori is also home to a deeply connected parent community. Here, families do more than just support the school—they support one another, forming lifelong bonds that turn 'school friends' into a second family.

3. What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

Because we value individualized learning, we move beyond traditional, scheduled classes for art, science, and physical education. Instead, these subjects are woven naturally into the curriculum as each child demonstrates interest and readiness. We believe children thrive when fueled by curiosity rather than rigid requirements. Our school year culminates in community-wide events—such as our annual art show, drama presentations, and public speaking recitals—which celebrate the beautiful, organic growth of students across all age groups.

4. What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

Head Start Montessori has always flourished alongside its community. From our first expansion in 2014 to the launch of our Elementary program—born from parents' desire for their children to continue growing with us—every step has been intentional. Our legacy and our future belong to the committed families who make this school a home.

5. What type of student is a good fit for your school?

While all students benefit from a Montessori education, the greatest outcomes are seen when families align themselves with the pedagogy and its long-term goals.

6. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

Occasionally a family will want to join the school for 1-3 months. We encourage parents to do their due diligence when finding a school for their child and family, and then trust their own process and make a commitment to a school.

7. To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

HSM provides a warm, loving, personalized community of like-minded parents, staff and owners who believe in the importance of the foundational years of a child's life. The collaboration of Families-School is very important to Head Start Montessori and we have an open-door policy where parents are always welcome. HSM prides itself on good communication and transparency. We also have a Parent Council, ensuring that we are all working in the best interest of the children.

8. How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

Head Start Montessori is a small, nurturing, and academically supportive environment that strictly adheres to the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) philosophy. We have a supportive student and parent community and parents appreciate the discipline children embody as a result our early years programs.

9. What aspect of your school is underappreciated?

Starting with our youngest in the infant room, families don't realize the time, energy, effort and unconditional love each member of the school provides, in order to make Head Start Montessori a home away from home.
Our bond with families doesn't end when they leave. Our students come back to volunteer and visit throughout the year. Through numerous siblings, our school stays connected to many families for more than a decade, forming strong relationships and becoming like family.

10. What might families find surprising about your school?

Both owners, Sara Alvi and Naureen Shah, are Montessori trained teachers, and are always present at the school. They are both passionate about their work, and love to talk about Montessori, life and the children. Their office is always open for quick chat and a cup of tea!

11. What improvements or changes has your school made recently?

We recently introduced uniforms for our Elementary students. This is has been a significant, yet subtle change to our school community. It has brought out a new sense of pride and new identity to the students and the school.

12. How will your school change in the next 5 years?

The school does not want to change any core values , but we do hope to find a space to call our own.

Nursery/Toddler to JK,Nursery/Toddler to SK — Both our daughters loved going to HSM. They had fun, made friends, and learned so much. The teachers were very professional and caring towards the students and stuck with the true Montessori way. Our older daughter graduated from the 3-year Casa program, and we felt like it really helped her to be ready for grade 1 in traditional schooling. While being the youngest in her grade, she was already far ahead of others, which helped her throughout her elementary school years. She continues to excel in school (now in grade 8), and I think a big part of it was that she built a great foundation at HSM. Our younger daughter did the Casa program for 3 years as well; however, we transferred her out to our local school for French immersion during her SK year. She was already reading quite well before she started her last year of the Casa program, so we felt confident that she was ready to be challenged more by learning French. She had no problems quickly adapting her reading skills she learned at HSM to read in French when starting SK.

Nursery/Toddler to Gr. 3,Nursery/Toddler to Gr. 3,Nursery/Toddler to Gr. 3 — Our three girls grew up at Head Start Montessori, from the infant room to grade 3. They loved the calm, supportive environment created by the teachers. This allowed them to focus on the wide variety of activities and materials available, building their skills (and confidence) systematically. Each kid enjoyed a different aspect of the experience, from hands-on crafts and arts activities to reading and group activities. The teachers are uniformly skilled at creating customized learning plans and encouraging each child to pursue their curiosity, with gentle nudges into the various areas of the curriculum. Work products are sent home at the end of the day, and we have collected 8 bankers' boxes worth over the years - a testament to the creative output that the children are encouraged to produce. At the end, our girls graduated from Head Start Montessori feeling confident and competent, and with lots of fond memories of the friends, teachers and experiences there. They were very well prepared to enter a larger school, skipping a grade in the process without missing a beat. This is the ultimate testament to the preparation they built at Head Start Montessori.

Nursery/Toddler (current) — My child really enjoys her time at Head Start Montessori School. Since going to Head Start Montessori in their youngest class, my daughter has developed great gross and fine motor skills. She loves and cares for the environment, others and herself. She has been taught to approach anyone with grace and courtesy. She loves the teachers and staff at the school, all of whom attend to the kids with nothing but love and encouragement. She's developing into her own person with independence and guidance from her teachers. She loves all experiences, especially music, circle time, math, practical life activities and socialization. At 4 and a half years old, she has started to learn basic math in a way that supports kids' understanding and development. She has a great vocabulary and speaks clearly and logically. She's also learning to write. She loves dancing and singing, and she approaches any activity with confidence and eagerness.

Nursery/Toddler to K,Nursery/Toddler to K — Our two sons attended Head Start Montessori School and had an amazing experience. The school provided a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment where they looked forward to learning every day. The teachers and staff were caring, supportive, and truly invested in each child's growth and well-being. What our boys appreciated most was the sense of community, the hands-on learning, and the friendships they built with both classmates and teachers. Even now, at ages 10 and 12, they still talk fondly about their time at Head Start and the positive memories they made there. The school helped build their confidence, independence, and love of learning. Their only disappointment was having to leave when it was time to move on to the next stage of school, but we’re so fortunate that our connection with the directors and teachers remains - all these years later.
