Karmin, a Kanata Montessori alumna, shared her perspective on the school's close-knit community, individualized support, dedicated educators, experiential learning opportunities, leadership development, and flexible approach to education. She reflected on how the school helped build her confidence, independence, and character while preparing her for university and life beyond the classroom.
Highlights from the interview
- One thing I appreciated most was all the experiences that I got that I 100% would not have received anywhere else. Whether it was indoor skydiving in Montreal for physics class, the winter camping trips for the Duke of Ed program, or the white-water rafting that was part of the week-long leadership trip, they were all community-building experiences that I definitely would not have had anywhere else. One thing I appreciated most was all the experiences that I got that I 100% would not have received anywhere else. Because it's such a close-knit and inclusive community, we see everyone, and we know everyone.
At Kanata Montessori the educators and staff really care about you. They make it their duty to investigate, figure out what's going on, and help you in any way they can.
They really understand each student and genuinely want to help. They'll ask you what they can do to support you, whether it's with academics or anything else. They're as flexible as they can be.
Almost everyone wanted to improve and become better. The educators cared, but the students also cared about themselves and their academics.
One of the school's core values that is very noticeable is its sense of community and leadership.
The most surprising thing about Kanata Montessori is that it's not a regular high school… They give you a lot of independence and responsibility. They also intentionally build community into the curriculum.
Going to Kanata Montessori really built my confidence. Coming to the school gave me the chance to try new things and learn that I could actually be good at school.
I appreciate all of the little things they did much more now. Those STEM activities every Friday might not have seemed valuable or important at the time… But now I realize just how important those community-building activities were for developing relationships and a wide variety of life skills.
I'm definitely grateful to the school and to the educators for supporting me and teaching me some of my most valuable life lessons.
I would definitely recommend the school because of the way it helps build your character, your confidence, and your sense of identity. They give you countless opportunities to grow academically and in so many other ways, which really helps build your confidence.
You could spearhead almost any club, event, or sports team. All you had to do was ask your principal, and they would help make it happen.
They don't just help you get into post-secondary; they prepare you to succeed once you get there. They equip you with the skills and confidence you'll need for life after high school.
Enjoy your time at the school and take full advantage of the incredible support system they have there. Wherever you go after high school, you might not have that level of support again.
