We make nature part of the school day—not an occasional field trip. Students apply Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Health, leadership, and wilderness skills in real environments, while maintaining structured academic learning in the mornings. Mother Nature becomes their third teacher.
We have traded the convenience of a conventional, desk-based school day for movement, exploration, changing weather, and real-world learning. Our program also requires commitment: outdoor learning is not offered as a casual drop-in because consistency is essential for safety, trust, and community.
LYNX grew from an outdoor education pilot in Canmore into a Calgary program, followed by expansion into Cochrane, Okotoks, and Edmonton. Its development has also been shaped by the Third Schools family’s experience creating specialized learning environments since 1996.
LYNX is especially well suited to curious, active students who learn through movement, exploration, and hands-on experience. Students should enjoy being outdoors, be able to participate safely with a group, and respond well to both academic structure and greater physical freedom.
LYNX may not be the right fit for a family seeking a conventional, exclusively indoor school day or occasional outdoor programming. Students must also be able to remain with their cohort, follow teacher directions outdoors, and safely navigate varied terrain and weather conditions.
Families choose LYNX because they do not want to choose between academic structure, homeschooling flexibility, and an active childhood. Our model brings those priorities together in one consistent, teacher-supported program.
LYNX is seen as an innovative and adventurous alternative to conventional schooling. What is sometimes less understood is that we are not simply an outdoor enrichment program: students follow intentional academic programming led by Alberta certificated teachers.
The structure behind the adventure. Outdoor learning may look spontaneous, but each experience is supported by certified educators, clear safety practices, purposeful curriculum connections, and the extensive specialized-education experience of the Third Schools family.
Families are often surprised by the breadth of the program. In addition to core academics and outdoor learning, Wednesday programming can include music, fine arts, drama, foods, robotics, coding, bicycle building, and longboard projects.
We have expanded access to Nature Inspired Education through additional outdoor classroom communities, supported onsite mornings and transportation in Calgary, and broader Wednesday electives. These additions give families more flexibility without changing the outdoor heart of LYNX.
We expect LYNX to reach more Alberta families through thoughtfully expanded locations, pathways, and hands-on programming. Our priority will be to grow without losing what makes LYNX distinctive: strong relationships, purposeful academics, active learning, and meaningful time in nature.
