(5) Student Experience

My daughter is a completely different child since starting at MindWare Academy. Getting her to school used to be a daily struggle, and learning often felt frustrating and discouraging for her. Now, she is engaged, motivated, and genuinely enjoys learning. The instruction is tailored to her needs and accommodations, and she is truly met where she is in every subject. Within six weeks of starting, she was reading independently and by choice—something years of specialized programs in public school hadn’t been able to achieve. Her writing, spelling, and math skills have all improved dramatically. The biggest change, though, has been emotional. She has grown so much in her ability to manage her emotions, interact positively with others, and feel confident in herself. The school actively teaches self-regulation, kindness, and empathy, not just academics. What she appreciates most is feeling understood, supported, and successful. She feels safe to try, ask questions, and make mistakes. At this point, there is nothing about the school that she finds disappointing. MindWare doesn’t just teach reading and math—they teach confidence and the whole child. I am incredibly grateful we found this school and for the positive impact it has had on her and her future.

Why MindWare Academy?

We ultimately chose MindWare Academy because they truly teach to each child’s abilities. If a student is struggling in a particular area, they don’t fall through the cracks—teachers step in with one‑on‑one instruction and targeted support to help them understand and succeed. Accommodations aren’t just written down; they are actually implemented day to day. The small teacher‑to‑student ratio was a major deciding factor, as it allows for individualized attention and meaningful progress. While we considered other schools, MindWare stood out because of its commitment to meeting children where they are and helping them move forward with confidence.

Expectations vs. Reality

MindWare Academy has aligned with my expectations in every way—and honestly, exceeded them. I hoped for a school that could support my child’s learning needs, but I didn’t expect to see such a dramatic change so quickly. For the first time, in Grade 4, my child genuinely enjoys learning. Seeing her confident, engaged, and excited about school has been more than I ever expected.

Your Advice

I would tell parents to be prepared for an adjustment, especially if they’re coming from a public school with before and after‑care. The schedule change can feel like a shock at first, but we’ve found that the solid school day actually makes for a better, more balanced experience for our child. There’s no such thing as a perfect school, but for us, MindWare comes very close.

(5) School Leadership

The leadership and administration at MindWare Academy really stand out for their strong communication and responsiveness. They are quick to reply to questions or emails, often even during the school day, which gives a lot of reassurance as a parent. We receive regular updates about what students are working on in group sessions, special classes, upcoming events, and general school news. The school also shares highlights through its Facebook page, including student activities, artwork, class projects, and events like the winter festival, which was planned and organized by the students themselves. The school fosters a very positive and respectful environment. There is a clear zero‑tolerance policy for negative behaviours, and it is consistently followed through by both teachers and administration. When discipline issues arise, they are handled fairly and appropriately. Overall, leadership is engaged, transparent, and clearly committed to creating a safe, supportive school culture for students and families.

(5) Teaching

The teaching at MindWare Academy has been exceptional. In just six weeks, my daughter learned to read independently—after four years of struggling in public school. Since then, she has continued to make strong progress across all subjects. Teachers take the time to work through concepts with her and support her when she struggles, encouraging questions rather than letting her fall behind. As her confidence has grown, she has become more engaged in class and is even helping other students. Her most recent report card provided more meaningful, detailed feedback than several years of previous reports combined. The teachers are clearly passionate, knowledgeable, and deeply invested in their students. Communication is open and ongoing, and feedback is constructive and focused on both progress and next steps. My daughter receives the right balance of challenge and support, and I am extremely happy with the quality of instruction at MindWare Academy.

(5) Academics

MindWare Academy offers a small, highly personalized program for students in Grades 1 to 8, following the Ontario curriculum. Classes are very small, which allows teachers to really know each child and tailor learning to their needs. Students receive daily individualized support. The school’s biggest strength is its focus on individual learning and emotional safety, especially for students with learning disabilities. The environment is supportive and respectful, and mistakes are treated as part of the learning process rather than failures. While the small size of the school may mean fewer academic or extracurricular options than larger schools, this is balanced by the close attention and confidence-building students receive. Overall, MindWare cultivates a calm, caring academic culture where students feel understood and encouraged. I believe the program provides a strong foundation and helps prepare children not just academically, but emotionally and socially, for the next steps in their lives.

(4) Extracurriculars

MindWare Academy doesn’t offer extracurriculars in the traditional sense, such as competitive sports teams or clubs, but students do participate in a wide range of activities beyond core academics. These activities are built into the school day and include creative projects, group activities, special classes, and school‑wide events that allow students to explore interests, collaborate, and have fun. While there may be fewer formal opportunities for competition, the school provides a supportive environment where students can engage socially, build confidence, and develop skills outside of traditional classroom learning. Activities like student‑planned events, art, and group sessions help foster teamwork, creativity, and leadership in a low‑pressure way. Overall, I feel MindWare provides the right context to develop well‑rounded students, especially for children who benefit from a more individualized and emotionally supportive environment. The focus is less on competition and more on growth, confidence, and participation, which has been a very positive fit for my child.

(5) Students

MindWare Academy has a small student body, and that really defines the feel and spirit of the school. The atmosphere is calm, supportive, and inclusive. Students know one another well, and there is a strong sense of belonging and mutual respect. What stands out most is how positively the students interact. Children are encouraged to support one another, and you can see genuine kindness and cooperation in the way they work and play together. Differences are accepted, and students are not made to feel singled out for learning differently. Instead, they are encouraged to help each other and celebrate one another’s successes. Overall, the dynamic between students is respectful and caring, and the school cultivates a safe, welcoming environment where kids feel comfortable being themselves. It’s a place where students can build friendships, confidence, and social skills alongside their academic growth.

(5) School Life

The overall quality of student life at MindWare Academy is excellent. My child genuinely loves going to school, which was not the case before. She feels safe, supported, and successful there, and that has completely changed her relationship with learning. She is excited to go to school, engaged during the day, and proud of her progress. What makes the biggest difference is that students are understood and accepted for who they are. Learning happens without pressure or embarrassment, and children are encouraged to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow at their own pace. Beyond academics, the school places strong emphasis on emotional regulation, kindness, and empathy, which has had a profound impact on my child’s confidence and maturity. She feels valued as a person, not just as a student. Because MindWare is small and highly focused on individualized learning, student life looks a bit different from that at larger schools. There are fewer traditional extracurricular activities, but students are still involved in creative projects, group activities, special events, and hands‑on experiences throughout the school day. For my child, this balance has worked very well. If the school were to improve student life further, additional optional activities or clubs could be a nice enhancement, but they are not essential to the positive experience she is already having. For prospective families, the most important thing to know is that MindWare is a place where children who may have struggled elsewhere can finally thrive. The school prioritizes emotional well‑being, confidence, and genuine learning. It is a calm, caring environment where students feel seen, supported, and encouraged—and that makes all the difference in their day‑to‑day school life.

(5) Community

What stands out most about the MindWare Academy community is how supportive and welcoming it feels, both among students and parents. As a parent, I’ve felt included, informed, and comfortable reaching out when needed. Communication is open and respectful, and parents are clearly viewed as partners in their child’s learning journey. Even when involvement is limited by schedules, the school does a great job of keeping families connected and informed about what’s happening day to day. Because the school is small and focused, parental involvement looks a bit different from that in larger schools, but that also creates a close‑knit feel. If anything, additional optional opportunities for parent involvement could be a nice addition, but overall, the sense of community is strong. It’s clear that MindWare values relationships, communication, and a shared commitment to the well‑being of its students.

(4.5) School Location

What stands out most is that MindWare Academy feels intentionally connected without being overwhelming. While it is a small, close‑knit school, it doesn’t feel like an isolated bubble. Students do leave the school grounds for recess at the nearby park and playground, which gives them valuable opportunities for movement, fresh air, and social interaction in a less structured setting. This regular change of environment is especially beneficial for students who need space to reset and regulate.

(5) Admissions

I would advise families to approach the application process with an open mind and to really pay attention to fit rather than perfection. One thing that stood out to us was that MindWare genuinely wants to make sure the school is the right environment for each child. The student shadowing process was especially helpful, as it allowed our child to experience the classroom and routines firsthand before any decisions were made. From our experience, the admissions process was not stressful. It felt collaborative rather than transactional, and the admissions team worked with us to understand our child’s needs and strengths. There was a clear sense that their goal was to set students up for success, not simply to fill a spot. I wouldn’t change much about the process. The emphasis on shadowing and mutual fit gave us confidence that MindWare was the right choice for our child, and it helped make the transition into the school much smoother.
