The big picture on Montessori Academy of London

We questioned the school administration

1. Who are you, as a school?

"Montessori Academy offers something unique in the London area: traditional, accredited Montessori education for Toddler, preschool (Casa), Elementary and Junior High students. Our mission is to cultivate experiences that inspire compassion and a love of learning. And as a registered charity (Charitable Registration #1052 29124 RR0001), we’re committed to continuously re-investing in our school for the benefit of our children, families, and greater community."

  • We offered Canada's first Montessori Adolescent program (Grades 7 &8).
  • We are a registered charity.
  • The school is governed by a volunteer board.

2. What do you do differently and uniquely well?

Not only are we the only accredited program in the London, Ontario, area, we were the first Montessori school to offer an Adolescent ("Junior High") program. To this day our programs set the standard for other Montessori Canada accredited schools; our faculty and staff provide guidance as accreditors for Montessori Canada and have served on the organizations board.

3. What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

Our values—Montessori, Curiosity, Respect, and Community—guide all that we do. Our commitment to Montessori is central to our mission of “cultivating experiences that inspire compassion and a love of learning.” As a result, we intentionally limit the use of technology in the classroom; for example, Smartboards are not used for lessons or presentations. As an accredited Montessori program, we prioritize hands-on Montessori materials in our Toddler, Casa, and Lower Elementary (Years 1–3) programs, with shared computers available in our Library. In Upper Elementary (Years 4–6), Chromebooks are introduced to support research. In our Adolescent (Junior High) program, students have access to Google Chromebooks at school to create and share content efficiently, and students use a range of technologies as part of our Communications and Media Studies (CAMS) course.

4. What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

In 2010, Montessori Academy of London became a board governed registered charity. Our volunteer board assumes strategic and financial accountability for the school. Its profile consists of alumni, alumni parents, current parents , community members, and ex-officio officers, including the Executive Director, Finance Director and Principal. Through this decision to become a registered charity we have committed to ensuring that London families retain access to world-class Montessori education long into the future.

5. What type of student is a good fit for your school?

Students who thrive at Montessori Academy of London are curious, self‑motivated, and eager to explore ideas independently and collaboratively. They enjoy hands‑on learning, appreciate structure with freedom, and are developing responsibility, respect, and openness to others.

Families who benefit most value education as a long‑term developmental journey and trust the Montessori approach, including the focus on independence and curiosity. They partner with the school, support Montessori principles at home, and see learning as holistic, joyful, and community‑driven.

6. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

Families may not find Montessori Academy of London the right fit if they prioritize strict standardization, frequent testing, or a fast‑paced, highly competitive academic environment. Our approach emphasizes individualized learning, intrinsic motivation, and long‑term developmental growth; families seeking constant comparison, rapid acceleration, or traditional homework‑heavy routines may feel their expectations aren’t being met. Likewise, parents who prefer tight control over their child’s day or who are uncomfortable with student choice and independence may find our approach challenging. At Montessori Academy, children experience freedom with responsibility, hands‑on exploration, and a calm, respectful community culture. Families who want a more conventional, teacher‑directed structure may not value these elements, and in turn may not appreciate what makes Montessori and MA distinct.

7. To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

Families choose Montessori Academy of London because they want an education that nurtures the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally. They value individualized learning, hands‑on materials, and the development of independence and confidence. Many parents are drawn to the three‑year cycles, the strong sense of community, and the deep relationships formed with teachers. They often compare us with traditional schools and choose Montessori Academy because they want less pressure, meaningful learning, and an environment where their child is known and supported. Families appreciate our calm, respectful culture, our focus on intrinsic motivation, and our commitment to long‑term growth over short‑term performance. They choose us because they see Montessori as a thoughtful, balanced alternative that aligns with their values and their hopes for their child’s development.

8. How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

Montessori Academy of London is widely seen as a warm, nurturing school that prioritizes the whole child. In the public eye, our most prominent feature is our commitment to authentic Montessori education—hands‑on learning, independence, and calm, purposeful classrooms. People often describe us as a close‑knit community with a strong reputation for developing confident, capable, and respectful students. The school is viewed as thoughtful and child‑centred rather than competitive or high‑pressure. When families think of MA, they picture an environment where children are known, supported, and encouraged to grow at their own pace. High School teachers often comment that they can easily identify students who attended Montessori Academy because of their maturity, focus, collaborative spirit, and comfort interacting with both peers and teachers.

9. What aspect of your school is underappreciated?

One underappreciated aspect of Montessori Academy of London is the depth of the three‑year cycle and the long‑term relationships it creates. It provides the students the opportunity to The stability of having the same teacher and community over several years allows students to take intellectual risks, develop leadership, and progress at a meaningful pace. In Montessori classrooms, three-year age groupings support deep mastery, leadership, and a strong sense of community. Children have extended time to learn, practice, and master skills at their own pace, often revisiting work over several years and strengthening understanding by teaching others. Older students naturally step into leadership roles, modeling independence, responsibility, and care for the environment while supporting younger peers. This cycle allows every child to experience being a learner, a mentor, and a leader, fostering confidence, collaboration, and a respectful, connected classroom community.
