A collective, rhythmic sound was heard across the Beach boardwalk near the Leuty Pavillion on June 3rd as children gathered for a drum circle organized by three local Montessori Beach community schools. Sandpiper Montessori School , Avalon Children's Montessori School and Waverly Road Montessori School invited family and friends to join drum circle facilitator Rufus Glasco for a special afternoon of beats that reverberated and engaged the children. This event brought together children from these 3 schools as well asfamilies in the neighbourhood. Montessori schools are based on a philosophy of self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play by students. In Montessori classrooms children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process. The summer drumming circle was a wonderful way for children and their parents to participate in an engaging activity that inspired musical abilities in a community atmosphere.
