Harriet Tubman
On Friday February 17th, the grade 4,5 &6 classes were treated to the performance 'The Spirit of Harriet Tubman.' The show, celebrating twenty years in production, is a one- woman show preformed and written by Leslie McCurdy. The play portrays the life of Harriet Tubman who 'was an American slave, who not only rescued herself from slavery, but returned a number of times to...lead others to freedom in Canada.' Students were captivated and astonished not only by the production itself but by the overall impact slavery had on those affected. The play made a wonderful connection for students who have been learning about History's different perspectives and implications during Black History Month.

To celebrate 100 days of school, the grade 8s put on their creative thinking caps to design a google doodle to show what 100 days of school means to them! Happy 100th day GAA!
The Grade 4 students had a math question... "if I wanted to write 100 memories of this year and there are 12 students, how many memories does each student need to write?" They created a display for their classroom door demonstrating their thinking skills for this problem- solving exercise!

Pink Shirt Day
Through the Pink Shirt Day campaign this year, we encourage everyone to “Pink It Forward”. We all have the capacity to be kind and compassionate, and our T-shirt and campaign slogan acts as a friendly reminder that no matter what our differences, being nice is always a choice worth making.
Pink Shirt Day is an awareness campaign with a history of spreading kindness and preventing bullying in school communities. At our school, we prevent bullying through our Zero Tolerance policy, as well as through the initiatives of the H2 Crew, to help all students feel safe and included at school.
Another way we are promoting kindness and preventing bullying is through our new buddy bunch! This buddy bench will be used to encourage all students to be kind and compassionate towards eachother.
The buddy bench was donated by the Elmer Family and will be outside for students to use at recess. Students looking for a friend at recess are invited to use the buddy bench. It has our H2 Crew Community Values written on it so we remember to always act according to the values.

Model UN Conference: Wednesday February 22nd
The Highlander Debate team attended the second annual MUN conference at Assumption Catholic S.S. in Burlington. Delegates debated a variety of current event topics covering a range of political, social and environmental issues from a range of nations. Our own delegates took home 5 of the 10 medals awarded to the 150 student participants. Our grade 6 delegates won 4 medals, as the youngest competitors in their division. The other medal was taken home, a second time, by a Grade 8 delegate on our Debate Team. Well done!
